I loved the tape loop; got exposed to lots of fantastic music. But, I felt terrible that someone had to keep paying a ton extra to send the CDs to me over here. Punkass inspired me to see who would be interested in our own intracontinental tape loop? Any takers?

I'd be up for it. I still listen to my previous Canadian mix! smile.gif

EDIT: And if we get a little band of people interested, I'll pin it with my super-mod powers.

Then you want in. Basically, everyone makes a mix and sends it on, you receive a mix in return, sort of in the form of a loop. Did that make any sense?

You interested in playing?
Punkass
But of course I am, sign me up. I really do not have a tape player if anyone is actually planning on making an actual tape though.

The new guy is willing to participate, but I seem to be everyone's least favorite DJ, so you may want to pretend I never posted this...

Anything Jack Bauer says is perfectly acceptable, regardless of how frightening. Don't you every forget that.

I'm going to pin this one so we can organise who is sending to who - Julie, as the instigator of this thread, that'll be your job.
widowspider
*Ahem*

What's going on with this loop then? We could do with a few more Yanks and Canucks on it too. smile.gif

Yes ma'am. When I get out of the shower I'll put in some effort.
Julie
Ok. So far, we've got myself, widz, punkass, jem and kifkroker.

Does everyone understand the concept of the loop?
widowspider
Yes miss.

I've had a busy week, so I just want to make sure I have it right. You make a CD for someone, mail it to them, and then they mail it to the next person. You receive a CD from someone, listen to it, and you mail it on to the next person.

As for format, I presume this is a standard CD and not an MP3 CD.

Yup, standard CD. In between the mailings, reviews of the CDs are posted. Tracklists are omitted from the CDs but can be PM'd post-review if desired.

I think this is pretty helpful too - from Member of the Week:

QUOTE (myself)
The compilation is more important than the content.
People see mix tapes as a chance to stuff their favourite pieces of music by all their favourite bands onto one disc, with no thought for the listener. The best mixes create an experience, that from beginning to end has variety, but which maintains an overall conherance. The first track draws you in, either in a low-key and seductive way, or with a thrilling, attention grabbing number. Equally the end must be strong - maybe even the best song on the whole CD, and must make a fitting climax to the journey.
Length is important (oo-er). Too long and people become bored. Too short and there is no sense of experience. About an hour is ideal. People rarely listen to whole albums any more. Successful mixes will hold the attention for the whole time, with no skipping or becoming bored.
Julie
Ah, thanks Adam. I wondered why I couldn't find that.
KifKroker
I don't recall the last time I made a mix for anyone, but I dare say I was 22 (I'm 29 now). Damn, this has been fun.

Even if no one else enjoys this mix, at least I have had fun. Let the mailing begin!

Glad you're enjoying it! Can we get confirmation that everyone else is still in and then we'll set a date for the first mail-out?
widowspider
I'm still in, and have yet to make my CD.
Punkass
I am still in, I could throw one together quickly.
Julie
Ok, so once we hear from Jem, we'll decide on a day sometime in April to get started.
jem
i'm in... still gotta make a cd but i'm in.
widowspider
Are we still doing this or what?
jem
i might still be in... it's just that posting a cd from up here could be really expensive. is ther anyway we could use radio blog or something to host it?

That's an interesting idea. Perhaps then we can get the stragglers from the UK loop in as well.
Punkass
It would only be a couple of dollars (if not even that). I send stuff to my Aussie buddy all the time and it is only 4 dollars for stuff that weighs quite a bit more than a single CD.
Julie
Yeah, that's true. It was only about 3 bucks when I sent stuff to the brits.

3 bucks is a days wages for me... and everything must be flown out of moosonee or sent by train as there are no roads, hence the extra expences.

unfortunatly not. greenland is probably more acessable then moosonee. but dont worry about it, i was thinking and talking to a few of my local friends and i can make it work. so yay. i'm still in!!!
widowspider
So from what I can see we have the following people interested in doing a Yank/Canuck tape loop:

Julie
widowspider
Punkass
Jem
KifKroker

I can edit or add to this list as neccessary, but I think we should nominate a date to close the names so we can actually do this fairly soon.

Wednesday, the 26th April is the closing date for the loop. K? smile.gif

Helens? Omni? Anyone?

Yeah, where the hell is Nic?
The 26th works just fine, although I won't be here to do any finalizing with you.
Then we'll set a date for the first send-out.
Punkass
CD Case/Cover has been made, now to make the actual compilation.
jem
...so this loop thing ever gonna happen?
widowspider
Oh yes, I forgot to check for any new takers. Apparently not.

OK, so the list is set as:

Julie>widowspider>Punkass>Jem>

Each make a CD with interesting artwork of your choice, and send it to the person next to you in the list (KifKroker will send to Julie). We then have two weeks to receive, listen and review (I'll pin a review thread up here) and send to the next person by the mailout date.
Official mailing date is set for Friday, May 12 to give everyone time to do their CD and get it looking all pretty like. Make sure you PM your address to the person who is sending you CDs, ie Punkass will PM me his address, jem PM Punkass, etc etc.

K?
Julie
Perfect, you rock the house, Rach.

I try.
widowspider
I still haven't had an address PM'd to me - has everyone sent their address to them what needs it?

1st mailout is Friday, May 12th, remember.

I really should get on this. Crap.
