I heard a very odd radio trailer for Danny Wallace's takeover of Adam and Joe's show on Sunday.

At the end of last Sunday's show Adam and Joe explained that Danny would be taking over next week and then had a bit of a chat about him and what he'd been up to. The trailer uses this bit but then cuts clips of Danny Wallace in commenting on what they are saying as if he was there at the time.

It's very odd, especially when I think about how he must have sat there recording that trailer by himself, pretending he was being spoken to.

I imagine he does that a lot.

I don't like Danny Wallace.
Zoe
In terms of 'things I like vs things I hate' having Danny Wallace fill in for Adam and Joe is like having Jeremy Clarkson guest presenting 'Screenwipe'.

Collings and Herrin say I!

Discovered the Iain Lee podcasts last week, and I like them very much.

Previously I'd only heard his show as part of Alex Lowe's Edinburgh show 'Let's talk to Barry', and though Barry from Watford is still a regular, if anything the legitimate callers are even funnier.

I may even start listening live.

If I could bear adverts on commercial radio.

If I could bear adverts on commercial radio.

If they're anything like our local FM station's adverts you'd go literally mad.

There's really only so many times a sane person can cope with umpteen repeats of 'economy windows' or 'kitchens & bathrooms' ads in one hour.

I might check out the Iain Lee podcasts - I used to think he was funny on The 11 O'Clock Show, despite the fact that not many other people did.

You may or may not be interested (probably the latter) to know that my former university's radio station website has been freshly updated. Open Air Radio www.openair.fm streams world music and discussion, and they are now (finally) uploading some of the episodes I made about a year ago (it's still all good though) of my Japanese music show, Tokyo Soundscape, which you can stream from the website or subscribe to podcasts of or what have you.

I finally got round to downloading an Adam & Joe podcast Friday. I do see what I've been missing out on.

I found a cassette with me doing a radio show aged about 7 or 8 but I have no way of recording it to send into Adam and Joe...plus I'm a bit embarrassed about it and I'm not sure if I would send it even if I could.

I've just downloaded my very first Ricky Gervais podcast. I only have 1 other podcast anyway, and that's Adam and Joe.

I have a similar tape, an archive recording of our radio station, "Radio Cool". It featured drum n bass, a fake chart run-down and improvised vocal tracks. Genius.

Heehee, excellent.

My brother and I used to record not so much a radio show as a 'silly hour of utter nonsensical sound' - we used to have several tapes kicking around of random bits and pieces we'd recorded from the radio, having employed rigorous use of the pause button (the old-fashioned spring mechanism allowed you to tweak the 'normal' recording speed by making the cassette cogs spin faster or slower - alternating said speed made for some hilarious end results). Editing serious talk radio into nonsense with staccato on-off-on-off use of the pause button was jolly good fun. The advent of modern hi-fi systems' clunky, noisy, one-touch pause mechanisms rendered that particular silliness impossible, sadly. I miss my old Hinari tape-to-tape/CD deck.

We occasionally mixed it up with recordings of ourselves talking gibberish, and twatting around with a Yamaha keyboard (replete with rubber drum pads) to concoct 'stoopid music' - silly little 30-second tunes of no structural or musical merit, but which had us in stitches with their discordant silliness afterwards. Again, the pause button was in regular use for these moments of terpsichorean daftness.

Halcyon days. *sigh*

Oh yes please do.

I did my own radio show for a while with a friend - we were 9. We even made our own spin-off comic. The poor quality of tape meant that songs could be heard during the 'sketches'. It was a proto-Jam adventure with me and friend making remarks and doing sketches over songs. Or just giggling.

One thing I distincly remember is a Kermit the frog-voiced sing-along to "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us now!" by Starship. The show was called 'Soup Weekly' or 'Weekly Soup' for no reason. We also had various other types of 'Weekly' including 'Sausage', "Cox's Orange Pippin" and 'Twinkle'.

Other tape goodies - I later wrote a series of poems entitled "Oliver's Dress" and read them aloud in my best fake RSC actor voice. And I have the charts with Bruno Brookes from 1989.

Collings and Herrin is a decent enough listen, and there are over 50 one hour long podcasts of that.

My only gripe is that for all Mayo and Kermode have wound down the annoying interrupting, Andrew Collins has ramped it up. Silly ol' Mr Bean voice.

On tonight's nice radio show, we'll be interviewing the lovely lovely Robin Ince.

A funny and genuinely nice man to chat to.

I'll also be making some proverbs up.

I used to do a lot of such tapes with my friends back in the 80s, either long lost or completely unplayable now.

I do remember one tape I did with my friend Jo-jo when we used a plug in microphone and I whacked myself in the mouth with it. Just thinking of it now sends me into hopeless giggles. On the tape itself, all you could hear was me finishing my bit by saying, "...and now over to Jo-jo with the news,' followed by an audible tap and me going "Oof!". The next few minutes were just the sound of two 7-year girls killing themselves laughing and a scream of, "I've wet myself!"
sweetbutinsane
Wow, I thought it was just me and my siblings who would make up radio shows. Ours usually involved mocking teachers from my primary school in our news reports and making up competitions with prizes chosen from whatever was lying about in the bedroom.

Ahh, the good old days. biggrin.gif

Today, 23:00 on BBC Radio 4

QUOTE
Arthur Smith presents a series of three comedy lectures on different aspects of Art.

Arthur deconstructs the Renaissance and asks if it is time for a 'Re-Renaissance'. The artist of the week is Caravaggio, who was not a very nice man. With contributions from Miriam Elia, Phil Nice, Leslie Primo and Jessica Hynes.

right now I'm listening to Mark Steele is in town. Pretty funny and informative as usual. If you haven't heard it before I recommend keeping an eye out for The Penny dreadfuls. One of the funniest and most original pieces of radio comedy in years http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/comedy/pennydr...ls_seance.shtml
some episodes are on you tube in fact so if you're bored this is a superb way of distracting you for half an hour before facing tedious responsibilities that can only be procrastinated for so long.

After a year, I finally recorded a new episode of Tokyo Soundscape last night with my good buddy Chris, and you can now listen to it here.

I made a few errors (mis-named an album! overloaded the volume on one track! cut off the end of another!), but hey, I was a little rusty. Anyway, there are tunes from Shonen Knife, Hoover's Ooover, 80kidz, Gyoko, Handsomeboy Technique, Soil & "Pimp" Sessions, and more! Yay more!
Kick in the Head
Yes, another Tokyo Soundscape! This time it's an all-female special, with tracks from Tokyo Pinsalocks, Tokyo Jihen, Super Junky Monkey, Cibo Matto and more. Plus stupid banter from me and Chris. Enjoy: http://openair.fm/tokyosoundscape/315-toky...scape-episode-6
