Yeah, his stuff is excellent. The one with the frog-faced man is very good too.

I can see you doing one of these easily.

Lovely.

Shame I can't draw, I've got a beautiful moleskine notebook sitting at home empty. laugh.gif

ETA: I adore the one grinner in "Sargasso."

Recently having bought her faux-Catholic patron saint jar candle "Our Lady of the Coal" (i.e. Loretta Lynn... hee), I've been reminded of the kick-ass pop cult prowess of LA artist Vicki Berndt. She does a lot of stuff in the 70's doe-eyed Keane style as well as mixing religious imagery with rock 'n' roll and films, etc.

The artist Blu, has covered the front Of Tate Modern in some of his art which will be part of the Tate's street art exhibition at the end of May.

Ooooh. I'll have to take a wander round tomorrow lunch and see. Forgot that was going up so soon.

These are STUNNING:

New Penguin Bond covers by Michael Gilette.

I think I'm going to buy one. Or all of them.
dandan
they are rather special...
ipse dixit
Cool Bond covers.

Just to add to the Tate stuff, I walked by yesterday for a looky. The two Baz has posted are by Sixeart (on the left) and Nunca (on the right). There's also one by Blu (as mentioned), one by Faile (yay!), one by Os Gemeos and this wonderfully imposing poster by JR...

You can see the corner of Faile's on the right. I'll try and get pics of the others next week.

Those are very cool, but I can't believe they've issued new covers again. How often do they re-issue, every 5 years?

Very cool, there are some more on Bear Gardens which is just behind Modern and also down by the Clink prison museum.

These are the ones on Bear Gardens which also has an invader on the street corner.

Yay for Faile, I really liked his work at the Cans festival.

Seems like. I guess they get away with it when every new movie comes out or anniversary occurs. It's lucky I'm not a collector.

I went and saw four of the pieces in the gallery they are displayed in at lunchtime, and was slightly underwhelmed. The colours weren't nearly as vibrant. I'll wait until they display the other pieces to see if I like any of them better.
Starscream`s Ghost
Scream painting back on display

It's a shame it's been slightly damaged, but I'm glad it's back on display. It's by far my favourite work of art.

I've never heard of this artist before but I love his stuff! The blog has some fine examples. The Man with the Golden Gun cover especially.

Over the past few months I've become a huge fan of the work by Bortusk Leer, it's nice a fresh and always cool to see a new piece up on the way to work.

I like his style. It's interesting how he lays the color down and then draws the details on top. I wonder if he's got an idea of the final product before he begins.

Went to a private view of Hush and Copyright last night. Was going to a buy a print of this, but they'd sold out by the time we reached the queue. Bums. Although it saves me £250.

Jake and Dinos Annihilate Hitler Art

Despite their author, I can’t help but feel a twang of anguish at the thought of any work of art being painted over by someone else.

I understand that the impact of the exhibition would be somewhat lessened had they used prints! Yet the thought of someone painting over 100 year old watercolours still makes me sad.

It’s an intriguing idea, and an exhibition I’d be curious to see, but I suspect it’s ultimately more shock than awe.

They are using the actual original artwork? That's shocking. I caught a piece about it on Newsnight last night but must have missed that they were using the originals.

They may not be great works, and they are by one of history's biggest villains, but they are still important pieces. His lack of artistic prowess indirectly led to one of the biggest events of the last 2000 years.

the chapman brothers have always come across as cocks. i quite liked some of their mannequin stuff, but everything i've seen since has just been a bit cack. i also remember watching them make something for damon and justine, way back when. she hated it asked them to do something else, they caved in and did.

if they had any balls, they'd have spend a couple of million on a famous piece, "annihilated" (cringes) that and rendered it worthless.

That was certainly the impression I got from the article:

QUOTE
Bought anonymously from collectors around the world for a total of £115,000, the Hitler watercolours are mostly plodding landscapes and a few smaller studies. The Chapman brothers have transformed them — the gallery uses the word “annihilated” — by painting rainbows, psychedelic skies, floating lovehearts and smiley faces into the background of each picture. The resulting work is now available as a job lot for £685,000. The brothers said that they were expecting angry reactions to the work but denied that it was offensive or that they were profiting from Hitler's notoriety.

Note that 'annihilating' them increases their 'value' six fold.

A price they have probably set themselves. How humble.

I wonder how they would feel if someone bought their "art" and destroyed it. Oh wait. That already happened.

On the way home I'm popping into the National Portrait Gallery with a marker pen. Help make a little extra money to help fund the arts.
Zoe
They didn't start with Hitler...

The Chapman brother 'rectified' Goya
mcraigclark
The Chapman brothers are douchebags. Destroying another artist's painting to create your own is antithetical to everything the medium stands for. I don't care that Hitler painted them. Actually, the originals could yield some insight into Hitler's mind. It's not often mankind gets to examine a more perfect dichotomy of abilities; competent and prolific artistic creation and the capacity for staggering destruction are not attributes you'd expect to find in one person.
curtinparloe
Reminds me of that ink in the Hurst sheep incident.

I've been infatuated with absurdly over-sized everyday objects for a long time. Claes Oldenburg has done lots, and it's all really fun and imaginative. I saw the garden hose in Freiburg years ago and fell in love with the feeling of being dwarfed by something that I'd normally hold in my hand. This guy, Robert Theirren, has done some cool objects too. I love the table and chairs.

Mark Leckey wins the Turner Prize

I'm really pleased, his was by far the most interesting and worthwhile work of a very mixed selection. I've been sporting his badge on my bag since visiting the exhibition at the Tate.

Spent a large chunk of yesterday tracking down old KLF remixes and stumbled across ex-member Jimmy Cauty's site. His take on Warner Brother's cartoons is, erm, interesting. His statues are particularly striking.
