belsay is really nice. the house is pretty interesting, but the quarry gardens are amazing and one of my favourite places.
similarly, one of my favourite haunts as a youth, was an old quarry in the cleveland his, which had been left for a few decades. nature returns with a vengeance and creates a pretty special atmosphere...

The National Gallery are doing an great promotion at the moment. For the last couple of weeks in the Soho area they have put full size framed reproductions of famous masterpieces on the sides of on the sides of buildings etc. It's quite odd to turn a corner and be confronted by a Turner or Rembrandt. And I have yet to see a vandalised one .

^ They're good, I've seen them. I'm also quite surprised (and pleased) that they've not been nicked or damaged. Although I imagine that they'll be keeping a close eye on them to replace any that do get vandalised.

They're impressive, but I'm not sure I get the artistic merit of making exact replicas of things out of cardboard.
QUOTE
The work of Chris Gilmour provokes surprise and amazement beyond what could appear to be a mere process of reproduction. In returning to the value of making and strongly emphasising it, these works reveal a process of understanding that lets us see everyday reality with new awareness and appreciation. This practice avoids a withdrawal into the limbo of craft, and implies an intimate and profound quest towards the reason of things.
I don't know about that.

i suppose that he reckons that the fact we are so impressed by his replicas, will bring us a renewed appreciation of the craft that goes into the objects that he is mimicking, despite their everydayness. i reckon that people are more likely to say 'nice' and not bother thinking. like me...

I like. And I
do appreciate the craft. Just think, he probably had to take apart & put together the real objects to be able to recreate them like this. He now knows a lot more than most how everyday things work. You can't take life & its trappings for granted.

That's a very good way of putting it, these seem more craft than art to me.
My brother used to spend hours taking electrical items apart and then reassembling them when he was a child. I'm not sure it gave him a greater insight into the everyday, but I'm sure it helped in making him the academic superstar he turned out to be - it certainly didn't help his social life.

I went to see the exhibit,
Spiritual Art of Salvador Dali. It was totally fabulous. I get such a high seeing any of Dali's original work. These were two different works. One was the Bible lithographs and the other was The Divine Comedy woodblocks. The gallery guy showed us a break-down of one of the woodblocks. The entire series used over 3000 woodblocks. And the details! I've never seen so much work put into one print.
I was supposed to go & see the Banksy exhibit too but I never got over there. Disappointed but Dali will keep me happy for a while now, so it's okay.

Yesterday Graziano Cecchini dropped five hundred thousand brightly coloured plastic balls bounced down the Spanish Steps in Rome. Each one "represented a lie told by a politician".

It may be equally weak in terms of artistic merit or social comment, but I'd be a hell of a lot more behind Banksy if his stunts were this fun.
Cecchini's previous work of public art/vandalism in Rome.

I likes him.
