He's attracted to 'ethnically diverse ladies' emotionally, but they don't make him erect?
Ade
I'd heard he had a tendency to talk bollocks, but that's taking the biscuit.
PrincessKate
He really likes his penis.
Ade
I wonder if he has a tiny KKK outfit for it? He probably has.

And he probably calls his penis 'Dikkk'.
PrincessKate
And The Grand High Wizard on special occasions, natch.
Seriously, who could ever take the KKK seriously when they name their top guy that?

Call me bias but the new Boyzone album is sounding pretty good.

I'm waiting for Cowell & Co to step in and help Chile.

Hang on, what's that? Not quite as big a story in the media as Haiti for JLS and Leona Lewis to "care"?

I don't dislike Achtung Baby. Although I did sell it after I first bought it. And then bought it again! [/IT Crowd] No, but seriously, I did.

Either way, I certainly don't agree that it deserves the highest of placings, but it certainly deserves a place in the Top 50. So, I shall quietly discount the #1 choice. Well played, Mr Nelson.

I went to see one of my best friend's band play at Moho Live in Manchester tonight and very very good it was too! They played in Camden last week but just thought I'd give them a bit of a plug here as they've got quite a few gigs around the country coming up if anyone takes a liking. They're an instrumental rock band with similarities to bands like Explosions in the Sky or Mogwai, and although I may be a bit biased, I have to admit they are absolutely awesome live. (Particularly as they are accompanied by some awe-inspiring and atmospheric visuals.)

This is their album press release/statement from their record company.
QUOTE
Cinematic is as dead-on as any reasonable description for the fifty minute instrumental debut by Blackpool, England’s GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE. An adventurous, stunning piece of work, In A Forest Without Trees is an intricate mixture of progressive rock and atmospherics doused with an emotional to and fro that pulls and releases in all the right places. Balancing lush, minor landscapes of sound with big swathes of noisy, firepeaked crescendos, GOONIES make the quieter bits sound every bit as compulsive as the explosive highlights.
This is headphone music at its finest: swelling dynamics, colorful interludes, thick melodies...like a fireworks display, only sometimes in slow motion.

I know a couple of you like this sort of stuff so if anyone's interested here are their links.

GNSD website or listen on Myspace.

(I'd recommend the tracks Don't fight the fire, f*** the arsonist, Everyone comes to life, and their new single Paul.) All their stuff is available to download too.)

Shameless plug over.

Not sure this counts as news as such but Pitchfork are doing a Top 200 tracks of the 90s. As pointless as it is, the links to the track do provide a good excuse for some nostalgia.

Well release date has been put back to at least March 2011! Whoopee fucking doo.

So we finally reach the top 20 today. Not a bad list in all, although it is from a decidedly American point of view. This line form the piece about Beck's "Loser" got me though, Great as they are, even the biggest overground U.S. hits on this list bear little resemblance to what credible music sounds like today. I literally have no idea just what credible music is supposed to be now. Indie-playlist with a folk tinge?

Anyway, it's not bad as stupid lists go and it has given me the opportunity over the last few days to listen to some songs that I hadn't heard in a while.

Next year, The Flaming Lips are doing a tour just playing The Soft Bulletin, supported by Dinosaur Jr playing Bug and Deerhoof playing Milk Man.

Sounds good. £45, but so tempting.

Mercury Music Award nominations announced

Adele - 21
Anna Calvi - Anna Calvi
Elbow - Build A Rocket Boys
Everything Everything - Man Alive
Ghostpoet - Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam
Gwilym Simcock - Good Days at Schloss Elmau
James Blake - James Blake
Katy B - On A Mission
King Creosote and Jon Hopkins - Diamond Mine
Metronomy - The English Riviera
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
Tinie Tempah - Disc-Overy

Of them, I've only listened to Anna Calvi, PJ Harvey and Metronomy, all of which I like a great deal. Polly Jean would be my pick, though.
Sir_Robin_the_brave
I can report that the Everything Everything album is great. The only other one I've heard is Elbow, which is also great (obviously)

I've been hearing many good things about the King Creosote/Jon Hopkins LP, might need to check that out.
Hobbes
From ones I've heard, Elbow is far and away the best album. James Blake will win it though.

Yes, it is very good - the perfect combination of lush electronica courtesy of Hopkins, and introspective folk from Creosote.

Sounds a marvellous combo. I rather like King Creosote, and I'm already keen on Hopkins' work too - I shall have to make investimagations.

As far as I'm aware, I haven't heard anything by Everything Everything, so all I think about when I hear their name is a joke that Jim Bob out of Carter USM said on Twitter to the effect of: "Strange that Everything Everything sound like Everyone Everyone."

Yeah I picked it up for £4 online on a whim as I had some singles from iTunes free downloads which I liked a lot. They're not going to change the face of music or anything but they've got some damn fine tunes.

REM split.

Cheers guys, you were amongst the very best.

I hope my friend Jo isn't crying too hard tonight.

Yep, they were one of the all time greats. Even though I'm not terribly fussed about their post-Bill Berry stuff (I like it fine, but I don't listen to it as much as the other stuff) that run from Murmur to New Adventures Hi-Fi is pretty stunning.

QUOTE (gulfcoast_highwayman @ Sep 21 2011, 08:33 PM) *

Ten years too late, as far as I'm concerned. They did some good stuff, but not so much recently - it got to a point where new REM albums were less of an event and more of inevitable occurance.

See ya hippies.
maian
I enjoyed their two recent albums. More consistent than most of the stuff before it. Having said that, I can't remember what they were called, so they can't have been all that memorable.

Edit: Accelerate and Collapse Into Now. Terrible titles, but good albums.
sleeping_pirate
I got to see them live about 3 years ago and they were just astounding. I think it's a real shame that they've split, but they had a very good run.

I can't profess to having been a huge fan, but 'Automatic For The People' has been on regular rotation since I bought it (from the second time on, admittedly - I just didn't take to it during those first few listens). It was a wise second attempt, for 'tis a near faultless album. I also still have a lot of love for 'Reveal' (despite its weaker mid-section). Much of their output since then has been fairly so-so in my opinion. I have yet to hear anything of their pre 'Out Of Time' oeuvre.
