And off we go.
I'm not sure how I feel about this, Raiders was excellent, Doom was good - but not as good, and Crusade was good, but in a cheesy kinda way.
Hopefully the next instalment will be more Raiders than Crusade, but part of me is wondering if a 60+ Ford can really carry this off . . .

I am always very pessimistic about the revival of an old franchise. It always stinks of making money from an established name without any regard for quality (I'm looking at you Rambo and Die Hard).
Let's hope I'm wrong, a new good Indie would be nice.
I'd much rather having a slightly old Ford as Indie than have him introduce some generic pretty boy new lead.

The one thing that makes me think "This is gonna be good!" is the fact that Spielberg, Lucas and Ford wouldn't have commited to it, if they didn't have faith in the end product. I'm not talking about just Lucas here. For me, Lucas is an amazing idea man, but he works better when he has help. All three parties aren't in this for the money. They're doing it because they want to do it right, which given the amount of rejected scripts that were written, should be no surprise. This and the fact that all three main players are happy with what they've got thus far, leads me to believe that this could be a good 'un.

So what are we thinking about all the Indie-action shots? Coz poor ol' Fordy isn't the youngin that he used to be (obviously).
Lots of editing and all the action sequences shot from the back/profile of a young stuntman?
Long lost young and fit relative to do all the swashbuckling (i.e. Ford takes on the Connery role from Crusade)?
CG? (teehee, that would be funny).

Er, noooo.
Ford can be such a compelling performer, he just needs to stop doing what's expected of him. You don't stop being a good actor, but it's easy to stop challenging yourself. It's high time for him to surprise everybody. Imagine him as somebody's crazy uncle in a Wes Anderson movie. That's the kind of role I'd like to see him try at this stage in the game.

The Fugitive was indeed among his last really excellent roles. But he really needs some vehicles that really test his talents again. Here's hoping Indy 4 adds a little extra to the formula.

I was excited for this anyway (Solo was my first crush at 6), but hearing such great actors as Jim Broadbent, John Hurt, and Cate Blanchett are attached makes me even more excited. I kind of like the joke Rotten Tomatoes tacked on to the end. Wish it was true:
Jim Broadbent is a very fine British actor who'll you'd probably remember from "Gangs of New York," "Moulin Rouge," or "Bridget Jones' Diary" -- in addition to about a hundred other flicks. The actor will be joining the "Indiana Jones 4" cast and crew in New Haven. It's there he'll get to play a helpful college professor.
When asked if this character could be the "new" Marcus Brody (the amusing sidekick previously played by the late Denholm Elliott), Broadbent "that would do for me" before offering up a friendly chuckle.
Other Brits in the cast include John Hurt, Ray Winstone, and Simon Pegg.

And to be ready for may 2008?? They're cutting it a bit fine aren't they? I would hate to see them do a rush job on this and end with a deflated balloon of a film to end the franchise. I dunno, most blockbusters get made in under a year with only a few months of filming and most of the time spent in post-production. The other films in the series were made in a similar timeframe so it shouldn't be rushed.

, he was a Lithuanian born (when he was born Lithuania was independent), captain of a Soviet submarine.

As to whether Lithuania has a navy, I don't know, I would imagine they'll have something now.

I must say, purely based on that film still, I'm not entirely sure about it all yet either.
But I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I just hope the father/son relationship this time isn't going to be a carbon copy rip-off of the Connery/Ford dynamic of Crusade. A few nods here and there will be quite fine, but there is a very fine line with these things...
I like the fact that chronologically it is correct - Indy in the 1950's really kind of appeals to me. I've had a soft spot for 50's nostalgia in the movies ever since Back To The Future - let's just hope that the Indy formula still works in that era. I have faith. At the moment, anyway.

The rumor that was going around recently was that
Cate Blanchett is not, contrary to speculation, the love interest, but in fact the villain. And that her character is Russian, which makes sense that there would be Cold War elements in the 1950's setting.

My feeling was that particular nugget hardly constitutes a spoiler at this stage; it's the one plot point that they've pretty much broadcast, the studio a hair's breadth shy of actually coming right out and saying it. (The trades went ahead and said it for them, though.)
The boy's mamma, of course, is still under speculation and would very much be considered a spoiler if anyone confirms it...
