Trailer for Prisoner remake. Can't say it's doing anything to make me think this will be anything other than mediocre at best.
Raven
I'm not so sure, I reckon the addition of McKellan could make this something a bit better than that. I've never really watched The Prisoner, but I'm tempted to give this a go.

Yes.

I am in two minds about the trailer - no Port Meirion or big white balloons. This could be good though because it isn't treading on the toes of the TV series and trying to just copy a much loved and unsurpassed premise. The Avengers movie already went to West Wales too and that could be off-putting even though i don't think that movie is as bad as everyone says (just Uma - she is dreadful). Anyways ... moving on.

The main problem with the Prisoner movie is the visual impact of the 'look' of the TV show - or rather, lack of it. One of the things about Port Meirion is that it is so beautiful, why leave? Those shit looking pink triangle houses are nothing on Sir Clough Williams Ellis. And yes - everyone shops at Old Navy but they kind of all do anyway - it looses the point. And the US is full of super-dramatic scenary and interesting neighbourhoods and places of beauty - LOST, of course, being a superb example of using the environment as a character.

McKellan looks ace but everything else seems like a bland American version of the British original. Which it is. Probably better than a lot of 'remakes' but not enough to blow you away.

As far as I know there are two box sets, both with the full series and of the same quality transfer. I have the first box set which also has a documentary made for American tv in the early 90s which is ok. I think when I saw the other box set, which came out after I had bought mine, it had more extras and a specially made documentary. If you have sky plus then keep an eye out for it on ITV4 as it seems to be on a lot. I'm not sure how sky plus works but try and get the series from the beginning, most episodes are stand alone but some do follow on from each other.

as far as i'm aware, all the extras, companions and documentaries about 'the prisoner' which are on the dvds are shit and just not worth bothering with at all.

i was lucky enough to get the complete set for £10, but the price seems to be £25 to £50 these days, depending on which version you get: which i don't think matters.

from a quick trawl around, i'd suggest trying to pick up one of the cheaper box sets or looking to pick up the individual volumes from play trade, amazon sellers and ebay...
Jimmay
Thank you both. I'll take a look around.

Pfft, I went to the one last night, hombre, plus the tie-in lecture about the work of production designer John Box. Get with the (BFI Southbank film and events) program(me)!

My thoughts will appear in the "Last film..." thread soon enough - suffice to say, there are quite a few reasons it's only a rare screening.

Cool. The bloke from Das Boot is awesome and the overall premise is pretty interesting. And Gabriel Byrne is scary as fuck. McKellan chews the scenary though. The soundtrack and soft-focus bits, I recall, are dated. It would be interesting to see the film on screen for shure.

Also, it is so clearly filmed in Snowdonia. Romania, my arse.

When was the last time you watched it, may I ask? Though by reasons for rare screening, I also mean that the print was so banged up and the sound so awful that they can probably only screen it a limited number of times before it becomes unwatchable.

I'll go into more detail later, but it's clear there's a better film trying to get out, be it directorial choices or studio hack editing.

7. The Gate (1987)

The Movie

A bunch of kids have to fight some demons who are coming out of a hole in their garden.

It’s never made entirely clear why they’re appearing, but we think it’s got something to do with heavy metal music.

Why So Bad?

Despite a trailer that makes The Gate look like every kind of awesome, actually watching the film is an incredibly boring experience.

You sit through 45 minutes of child conversation, waiting for anything to happen.

Then, the slow-dawning realisation hits you that the trailer was front-loaded with every single good bit from the film.

That’s a cardinal sin no bad horror movie can recover from.

So Bad It’s Good?

Sadly, this is one of the few flicks on our list to be so bad it’s bad. Still, amazing trailer.

That was a great sleepover! After we'd watched the film (in the middle of the night) one of Emma Rushton's Mum's clockwork clowns started running on it's own. OK, OK so someone probably wound it up a a joke, but it was gosh darn scary for a group of 12 year old girls. The fact Emma's Mum had clockwork clowns in her living room is probably scarier than the film.

Just spent the best part of an hour going through all the films listed and trying not to chuck. There is a certain tactile quality to 80s/90s horror both in terms of the low grade quality of the film used and the grisly prosthetics that, while subject to its own obvious fakery, always trump CG for gut-chucking reactions.

They may still be making Shooting Stars, but as they say, there is nothing else like it and there hasn't been for years. We've had some really good new character comedy in the past decade (Saxondale, Peep Show, Gavin & Stacey, Nighty Night...) but they tend to focus on cringeworthy laughs, and surreal comic giants like Chris Morris and Vic & Bob are few and far between. The closest you get is the Mighty Boosh (who disappeared up Noel's skinny a-hole) and The League of Gentlemen which doesn't pack in the same number of laughs. The best laughs these days come from vitriolic media-focussed ranting (Charlie Brooker) or vitriolic media-focussed quizzing (Charlie Brooker). Welcome back Shooting Stars!
GundamGuy_UK
I agree.

I've said for the past few years that with the success of celebrity quiz shows like QI, Mock the Week and so on, Shooting Stars still has a valid place in the TV schedule.

I know it's a different format to those particular shows, but they're hardly "real" quiz shows. The quiz itself takes a back seat to the comedy, usually provided by the guests. Shooting Stars is the same idea, only coming more from the hosts and having the quiz element being more surreal.

I can't wait, the Christmas one was brilliant.

A good list which is well written and thoughtful. I disagree with your inclusion of Funny Games U.S., but that's more to do with my own dislike of Haneke than the film itself, which is a passable remake of an okay original. And I'd say that James Watkins' earlier film, My Little Eye, is much more unsettling than Eden Lake.

Armando Iannucci can be included in this ilk. He can do surreal (Time Trumpet) and real (The thick of it) comedy in amply measure. And it isn't just because I LOVE HIM VERY MUCH!!!!11

But I know what you mean. TV whimsical silly (not entirely brainless) is thin on the ground.

Haneke is certainly a difficult patronising man, so I have my reservations, but I think it's still an upsetting watch. And I ain't done seen My Little Eye - I've heard many wildly varying opinions on it, so should really try to see it myself.

You might not take to it after Eden Lake, which is a more immediate film, but also after we have had so much reality television. Seeing it when reality TV was in its infancy lent it a shock and made it, for me, a deeply unsettling piece of horror wrapped around a nice satiric swipe at the emerging genre. It's the main reason why I don't watch reality TV.
