I don't think you were alone in thinking that!
Not at all. And it's precisely the response Whedon was hoping to elicit, I'd imagine; if Wash dies, all bets are off. (Not saying I think it's overtly calculated, just that it ups the ante if there's real reason not to suspect it would end like one of the episodes of the show w/ everyone safe and sound.)
Great link, thanks Rache.

I'd agree with that, though I think they were completely correct about the death in 24, which really was nonsensical and unnecessary, given the nature of the character.
Definitely. A character with plenty of usefulness and possibility left in him, which they more or less pissed away. (Although it's not the first time they've done so with a character who had more potential.... Michelle, anyone?)
ETA: Oh, and though I suffered a violent allergy to Ally McBeal and thus never really watched it... I'd blindly challenge Billy's brain tumor to be worse than what they did to poor Mark Greene on ER. After shovelling more shit than any one character in prime time history, then they give the poor man a tumor and drag his death out for an entire season; that ended my stormy relationship with that show. Of course, Anthony Edwards is already on the list once so maybe that kept Mark out...
