Interestingly enough, Oz was the one supposed to die in that instance.

I guess he wasn't popular enough then.

Or maybe it gave the death a greater emotional impact.

It certainly did.

I had heard that one of the cast was going to buy it before hand, so when Book bought the farm I let out a sigh of relief - when Wash was killed it ramped up the suspense over the rest of the film as I genuinely didn’t know who was safe from that point.

I thought it worked pretty well, especially as we are unlikely to ever see Firefly/Serenity on screen again.

I thought it was really shoddy, in fact I thought a number of characters in the film were treated pretty shoddily.

'Serenity' was very much the let down for me.

Ten Beloved Characters, Ten Ignoble Deaths

7.  Joss Whedon's ragtag crew of smugglers flew from TV to the big screen aboard their ship the Serenity (thanks in part to solid DVD sales for the original series), piloted by the ship's class clown, the irrepressible Hoban "Wash" Washburne. But he'll be left out of any sequels — though actor Alan Tudyk enjoys spreading rumors of those sequels anyway — as he takes a grappling hook through the chest, in a scene that would almost be funny if it weren't such a major bummer. Leave it to ruthless Joss Whedon to repay his rabid fans by killing off their most beloved character just before the climactic final scenes.
*

I reckon they missed the point on most of those deaths, though - it's precisely because these characters were great, and their deaths either sudden or early, that they carry a greater shock. Many examples of great rather than shoddy writing, imo.

After Wash got it, I thought he was just going to kill all of them. I was totally stunned.

Role-Playing Manga Restaurants

"In keeping with the schoolboy theme, waiters with manicured hands and soft voices pretend to be teenage students, chatting and flirting with well-dressed Japanese women playing the roles of benefactresses visiting the school."

I'd agree with that, though I think they were completely correct about the death in 24, which really was nonsensical and unnecessary, given the nature of the character.

I don't think you were alone in thinking that!

I thought, "that was fast and pointless", then I thought "this film is borrowing heavily from several sources, including the 'Star Wars' prequels", then I thought "meh".

A little media odd and sod for you all...

When I'm not arsing around on the radio with Shack of this parish, I'm often to be found doing favours for silent lab-coated comedy henchmen, and I'm quite friendly with Fred Aylward, who spent most of the 1990s as Vic Reeves' spirit level-loving sidekick Les.

Anyroad, about a year ago Fred mentioned that he had a fair old bit of unseen footage from his old Les days gathering dust, to which my immediate response was "put it on Youtube!!!"

And he has, well some of it anyway. He's made a lovely little five-minute film of Les's visit to Glastonbury in 1995, and you can see it here...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ohromIpcHE

This is to test the water really, and if there's enough interest then Fred intends to start editing and uploading more little treasures from the vaults. So give him a click and say hello!

And feel free to spread the word to fellow R&M fans... Fred isn't really online so I promised I would help get this about a bit. Pass it on! smile.gif

I love the US poster for The Bank Job. It's such a classic 70's design.

Film seems to have done well in the US this weekend. And a 7.8 rating on IMDB!

I'm really looking forward to seeing that - Wossy gave it a bit of a so-so review the other week, but I thought the trailer looked the business.

Not at all. And it's precisely the response Whedon was hoping to elicit, I'd imagine; if Wash dies, all bets are off. (Not saying I think it's overtly calculated, just that it ups the ante if there's real reason not to suspect it would end like one of the episodes of the show w/ everyone safe and sound.)

Great link, thanks Rache.

Definitely. A character with plenty of usefulness and possibility left in him, which they more or less pissed away. (Although it's not the first time they've done so with a character who had more potential.... Michelle, anyone?)

ETA: Oh, and though I suffered a violent allergy to Ally McBeal and thus never really watched it... I'd blindly challenge Billy's brain tumor to be worse than what they did to poor Mark Greene on ER. After shovelling more shit than any one character in prime time history, then they give the poor man a tumor and drag his death out for an entire season; that ended my stormy relationship with that show. Of course, Anthony Edwards is already on the list once so maybe that kept Mark out...

Oh, that was terrible to watch. Really heartbreaking stuff.
Zoe
Having seen both, I'd say Nate in 'Six Feet Under' beats them both in the brain tumour death stakes.
thirtyhelens
Hrm... I'd still rate Mark's worse. Nate had a much more satisfying character arc over the course of five years, whereas Mark always seemed to be trying to recover from the latest setback. Plus, it didn't help that they hooked him up with Elizabeth; Drs. Greene and Corday, least sizzling TV couple ever. (I was always kind of hoping he'd hook up with Jami Gertz's character, the shrink, and Alex Kingston had much better chemistry with Eriq La Salle.)

Are we spoiling one and not the other due to relative recentness, BTW?

It's odd, but I think Brits know more about Gilligan's Island from references in films and TV shows rather than the show itself. In my lifetime I can't recall the show ever being broadcast in the UK.

So, if anyone here, like me, happened to buy a HD-DVD player from Best Buy prior to February 23, they're entitled to a $50 gift card to make amends for the death of the format.

That means they'll have effectively paid me $5 to take one of those Xbox 360 add-ons off their hands. Not bad!

I'm not sure what you mean.

In 'The Tribe' all adults are dead and kids must make their own society.

In 'Children Of Men' no more babies are being born so the youngest in society are treated almost as as living gods.

It'll still be kid-based though, essentially, and based around their society. That's how I'm seeing it, anyway.
