What made me smile is that it is being filmed in Torquay, probably the worst setting for a romantic comedy this side of Stoke!

I don't think there was ever a new commercials thread created, so I'll dump this here.

My good friends grand:pm have a song featured in a new American Nike commercial!

The commercial's a bit odd, but you can view it by clicking here and then clicking on Videos.

The trouble with todays spoofs.

I watched the first 5 minutes of Epic Movie the other day and it was the equivalent of having an annoying person nudging you in the ribs and saying "Look, it's like that bit from that film." and that's the only joke, it's like that bit from that film.

I've been thinking, for quite a while now, that making heavy use of "knowing" nods to other shows and films has been getting a bit old. I've never seen any of the Scary Movie films, or their successors, but the kind of referencing that took place in Buffy and Farscape etc has really had its day, mainly because everyone started to do it.
Omniscia
It's simple, disposable dross that's easy to pawn off on underdeveloped teens looking for an unchallenging, unsophisticated way to spend 80 minutes. And since there are millions upon millions of them (dumb teenagers, that is), it'll make its budget back in a weekend or two.

Remember, movies are about market economics more than story, or craftsmanship, or, God forbid, art. But you already know that.
Raven
I wasn't actually taking about the Scary Movie type films above, I was referring to the genre referencing that takes place in shows like Heroes, Doctor Who and Primeval etc.

I just feel there are too many shows doing this now, and whilst John Crichton making an off the cuff remark about not being Luke Skywalker may have been original and funny ten years ago, I feel the effect of a genre reference now has been diminished because too many shows are doing it.
Starscream`s Ghost
Not only that, but it serves to date the shows horribly.

A reference in Doctor Who last year about 'blogging', will look terrible in a few years' time.

But then in some shows it can work. Reaper references popular culture heavily, much like a lot of Kevin Smith's films, and it works. Not everything is made to last the test of time, some entertainment is made for the here and now.
Jimmay
It's strange talking about how pop culture reference can't work in the long run in tv programmes on a forum about Spaced which is pretty much nothing but.

References to contemporary culture aren't really what I'm talking about.

The original William Hartnell stories featured the Beatles, for instance, and that helps to make the show more of its day, which is as I think it should be for Doctor Who.

I'm talking about referencing specific genre material, such as Crichton making Yoda jokes in Farscape, the Death Star painted on the side of the geek van in Buffy, the Doctor mentioning Arthur Dent in the Christmas Invasion etc.

Good though some of these jokes were, I've noticed this sort of referencing turning up more often, and I just feel that it is getting a bit repetitive.

To be fair J-Lo is a lot more famous than Kelly, and public interest in her is substancially higher.

My cousin has worked with Jennifer, and apparently she's lovely, polite and professional.

I suspect 90% of stories about her are bollocks. After all she was engaged to Affleck, and he's hilarious.
Starscream`s Ghost
I think 'Jenny from the Block' earned her all the contempt she deserves.

And no, she wasn't being ironic with that song.

I on the other hand will forgive her for pretty much anything for being so excellent in Out of Sight.
Starscream`s Ghost
The Cell anyone?

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh.
Zoe
No offence, but I'd take the word of someone that's met her, and worked underneath her, more than someone who's read stories about her in the papers and dislikes her because of the lyrics to a pop song.

When Katie first met her, she was in a room of about 20 people, Jennifer spotted she hadn't met her yet and came over and introduced herself personally (as Jennifer, not J-Lo or any other such bollocks). This sort of humility and courtesy is not common in the fashion industry. Throughout working with her (Katie was an assistant stylist for her fashion show) Jennifer was kind, professional and had a sense of humour when things went wrong.

That's really all you want from someone in a position of authority. Katie was also very impressed by how hard she worked, and how hands on she was in presenting her collection. This wasn't something she just slapped her name on (like a lot of other celebrity clothes lines). Apparently every second of her day is accounted for, she essentially runs her own empire.

I don't fancy it myself.
Starscream`s Ghost
If that's the case, and she is so nice and humble, then why does she project the image of a spoiled diva, with the ridiculous riders, the immense entourage and the media circus?

I'm not saying she isn't what your cousin says, I'm just wondering why she allows herself, and occasionally seems happy with, the image of a woman so full of herself that she demands everything in her dressing room be white.

I wouldn't want that.

Because I'm a pretty little girl. [/Bing]
Zoe
I have no idea. Once started rumours do tend to snowball. The riders are most likely made up, or not written by her. 'Entourages' frequently make demands on behalf of their clients, that aren't specifically requested. I have first hand experience of this at work, where the talent's 'people' will make over the top demands in advance, and be very rude, but the performers themselves are a delight, easy going and undemanding.

Who knows why she has this reputation. Katie only mentioned how nice she was, because that sort of behaviour is unusual in an industry full of diva strops, where subordinates are uniformly treated like shit.

I'm sure she's not bothered by it, by the sounds of it she's too busy to care, and she can always cry herself to sleep at night on her bed made of money.

I only brought it up because I find it interesting how the infamous can defy expectations, and as an example of how the media often creates its own monsters.

You take your money, you make your choices. I often think la Beckham seems very funny, savvy and self-aware when I see her actually talking, but I certainly don't feel sorry for any vitriol printed about her. You invite the media into your life, its very much a two-way street, and they both get something out of it.

I'm sure Jennifer isn't naive enough to think tabloid stories have no effect on the public's interest in her, and whatever she's trying to sell them. Which is most likely why she doesn't bother trying to destroy the image of her they've created.

It's much more important to make a good impression on the people you actually meet and work with, rather than people who've never met you.
Starscream`s Ghost
You're right, but keeping up an image like that can lead to a downfall, just look at Mariah Carey. She played right up to the image of 'demanding diva'.

Diana Ross did the same.

Still, congrats to Kelly MacDonald, eh? biggrin.gif

Mariah Carey is huge. I believe she's just gone to #1 in America with her new single (her 18th number one over there).

People love the whole diva thing. All publicity is good publicity. Unless it's related to child pornography.
