Philippines angry at Enfield show.

I saw this, and really can't see what all the fuss is about. Where are the outraged Northerners complaining about their sterotype?!

In the North, probably.

Actually, my half-Filipina friend is kinda sick of people making remarks about the sexual availability of women of the Phillipines - especially concerning her mum. Harry better watch out. Her mum is 4ft 11' of Filipina dynamite.

We realise that the gag is about the wealthy family treating people like pets, rather than any slur on Philpinos or Northerners. I honestly think the outrage is about as real as that which supposedly met Little Britain's arrival in the US.

Quite. I've seen some fat people in the south such as in that London place. Albeit less in number but they exist. I am Northern and not fat. Johnny Vegas is carrying it all for me.

Also, I think Enfield likes to take on the mantle of 'outrage' since Little Britain came along and stole his crass comedy character crown. You think he has pictures of Walliams on a dartboard? I know I do.
Wife Of Rolex
Enfield's still funny, though. Little Britain USA is just...awful.

Me soliticing more ideas from you clever people. wink.gif I'm trying to compile a list of Hot Movie Pairings When The Geeks Inherit The Earth - I've already got about 4 ideas but for example from our intelligent, nerdy perspective... if we ran Hollywood, with whom would we replace the Clooney/Roberts, Pitt/Jolie, Hanks/Ryan pairings. Who is popular enough in geek circles to merit A-List status. Who opens a movie to $35M in OUR reality? (Doesn't have to be male/female, either... buddy flicks are romances, too. wink.gif )

DISCUSS!

Ok, I've gone for the buddy flick option, I'd pay to see...

Tim Thomerson & M Emmett Walsh
Bill Paxton & Alan Arkin
Al Leong & Jason Statham
Clea Duvall & Michelle Rodriguez
Fred Williamson & Sonny Chiba
thirtyhelens
Ha! I really like the Clea & Michelle idea. Nice one Sos.

Ooooh. I like.

Don't we already have an ideal pair in Allen/Keaton?

I wouldn't mind seeing Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey together, someday.
Serafina_Pekkala
Geek couples?

Pasdar and Lilly.
Fillion and Gellar (okay they were together in S.7 Buffy but they worked v.well together - more please).
Tennant and Deschanel, Z.
Hannigan and that bloke who plays 'Chuck'.
(all these options are interchangeable BTW, I imagine David would have a hankering for some SMG)

Colbert and Fey would be like this genius lookielikey couple and could stare longingly at each other whilst dressd the same and singing 'Henry Lee'.

thirtyhelens
*ba-dum-tish* Actually, Fey's on the list and she's half-Greek. laugh.gif She's paired off with someone else, though. Ahem.

Banged this sucker out last night while my head felt fresh, though it won't go up till Tuesday. Enjoy the suspense...hurr.

"He without leg; she without arm"
Beautiful but odd.
And is it exploitative?
Serafina_Pekkala
If the performers agree and are paid decently, then no - it's personal choice and not exploitation. The only thing different is the physicality of the performers and for centuries, performance has been a way for disabled people to earn a living. The attitudes of the onlookers are kinda arbitrary and cannot be controlled. If one is the type of person to patronise or judge, they do it with everyone really. Or that's my opinion.

Both my parents are now registered as disabled. Sorry for the soapbox but this is something I feel strongly about. *le shrug* My mum is partially deaf (due to Menniere's syndrome) and my dad has mobility problems because of osteoarthritis. The biggest wake-up call to us is the attitudes of other people - either discomfort or lack of patience over the realities of disability. Disabled people do what they want like the rest of us. Or they should.
melzilla
I agree with Sef. I think it's great, and surely the whole idea of the thing is to challenge the ideas of beauty and ability and show people that people can still do amazing things with disabilities. I don't find the Paralympics exploitative, for example.
Sostie
OK, I'm asking this out of nothing more than curiosity. Can anyone think what film might have the most Oscar winners in it's cast. Best I can do is A Bridge Too Far - 7 winners, 8 if you count Richard Attenborough's uncredited cameo.
Rua
Didn't Around The World in Eighty Days have plenty of oscar winners in it?
maian
Edit: Just recounted, and The Player actually has 12, 13 if you count Julia Roberts' uncredited cameo, and about 20 nominees in the cast as well.
Rua
Ohhh The Player, yeah of course.

Raven
In a similar vein to A Bridge Too Far, The Longest Day must have a few Oscar winners in it as well.
Rua
Kenneth Brannagh's Hamlet would have a good lot in it.

well, someone on the kfccinema.com board was enquiring about films they may have missed in the last two years. i thought i'd also post my response here as there may be a couple of people who are interested in it...

QUOTE (me on the kfccinema.com messageboard)
well, these are all things which i've watched in the last two years. some of them are slightly older, but have only had an accessible dvd release in this time;

essential viewing - ten big hitters that seem to be universally loved...

exiled - johnnie to's thematic follow up to 'the mission'.
fearless - jet li's return to proper martial arts cinema, just make sure you watch the director's cut.
the host - deservedly praised monster movie / family drama.
my name is fame - semi-autobiographical lau ching wan comic drama.
mad detective - lau ching wan and johnnie to combine to make a seemingly ridiculous concept work extremely well.
lust, caution - fantastically executed, tense drama from ang lee.
linda linda linda - super fun, great music, bae doo na.
secret sunshine - the return of lee chang-dong; and an amazing one, at that.
the taste of tea - a family drama with a hint of the absurd.
invisible target - teen idols, melodrama and quality action.

good stuff - ten which have garnered mixed reactions, but definitely worth watching...

the sun also rises - the return of jiang wen; wacked out, dream like and great.
crazy stone - a fun mainland comedy caper.
the banquet - beautiful, hamlet influenced, epic.
the warlords - flawed, but impressive, battle filled drama.
city of violence - ryu seung-wan's korean action opus.
after this, our exile - patrick tam returns and aaron kwok flexes his acting muscle in a solid drama. this reminds me that i still need to get the director's cut.
memories of matsuko - lars von trier meets disney? a bizarre mixture of (visual and metaphorical) sunshine and showers, with a great central performance.
fatal contact - forget the plot, but watch wu jing kick some arse in some fantastically brutal fighting sequences.
chocolate - as above, but with "the female tony jaa" injuring poor stuntmen in her wake.
eye in the sky - more milkyway goodness. fun, if slightly stretched, surveillance drama.

ooh, you should also see - ten which i really liked, but seemed to drop under some people's radars...

invisible waves - more quality from pen-ek ratanaruang, with added asano.
university of laughs - quality japanese stage play transferred to the screen. solidly comic, with a touch of dramatic.
always : sunset on third street - ensemble drama, taking place in the shadow of the construction of the tokyo tower.
the shoe fairy - a dark and magical fairytale involving shoes. no surprise there.
the professor and his beloved equation - a fun drama, with a healthy dose of mathematics.
the postmodern life of my aunt - great performances, in a pretty down-beat drama.
strawberry shortcakes - solid drama, with comic tinges, focussing on four young women in tokyo.
tokyo tower : mom & me, and sometimes dad - emotional drama with odagiri jo.
exodus - an amazing film, which should've got a whole heap more praise. pang ho-cheung continues to develop in one of hong kong's strongest film-makers.
sparrow - actually, everyone seemed to like this, but i wanted to keep the numbers neat. johnnie to's labour of love; pick-pockets and a hint of busby berkeley.

I could do with seeing Lust, Caution again, the viewing conditions in the cinema where I saw it were not ideal.

I've also found Linda Linda Linda on youtube so I think I'll be watching that tonight as I have no tv at the mo.
