Get the Freebies was piss funny and the origin of both my name on here and some of my old avatars. Can't wait.

Carl Weathers?!

With all those excellent ingredients, it sound like they've got one hell of a stew going, baby.
Jubei
A BBC kung-fu action drama set in 2012? Going on the BBCs recent sci-fi outings, I don't have high hopes, but I'm willing to wait and see.

"... I'm looking forward to sampling a few of the single malts while I'm here," he added unnecessarily, just to prove how much he rules. Carl Weathers rules.
Zoe
And he loves ham.

I was at a pub called "The Waverly Tea Rooms" yesterday.

There is a club called 'Tusk' next door.

The BBC were filming this show.

Runners were on the lookout for paparazzi.

I sat, smoked (it's an outside beer garden pub) and watched.

It entertained me.

No idea it was this though!

I'm willing to give some more details if prompted.

Starscream`s Ghost
Hmm. If it's on BBC Three, let's hope it doesn't fall under the curse of Two Pints and The Real Hustle...
Zoe
I'm hoping it's the next 'Fat Men Can't Hunt'.
melzilla
This sounds fan-phoo'kin-tastic! Arf!

Even more awesome is this! wink.gif

Do you mean repeated to death or pushed to a 2am slot in order to repeat Two Pints and The Real Hustle to death some more?

QUOTE (curtinparloe @ Sep 19 2007, 06:18 PM)

Oops.

Hopefully this will warrant the publishing of a Get the Freebies collection, my favourite thing Hewlett ever did.

The latter. The one they did to the Boosh.

As first to pass your observation test, do I win a prize?

Incidentally, did you see anything of Monkey: Journey To The West when it was on in Manchester? Hewlett was involved in the production design.
whitey
I saw the adverts on the sides of the buses. I'm too poor to see shows.
curtinparloe
I used my dole. The site may be of interest. (Flash heavy)

Carl Weathers is looking at 10,000 dollars worth of medical bills here. Guess where he won't be going...

BBC Three Commissions Drama Pilots

Danny Cohen, Controller of BBC Three, has announced the commission of six new drama pilots to transmit later this year.

A combination of new talent and established names will produce the pieces, which cover a wide range of maverick tales set both in the present day and the future.

Danny Cohen commented: "I'm very excited by the fresh feel of the drama pilots that we've commissioned. They are bold, vibrant pieces that draw together emerging talent with some of the strongest voices in British drama.

"These pilots are the first step in the development of a new generation of youthful drama series for BBC Three."

. . . . . .

From the mind of Gorillaz and Tank Girl creator, Jamie Hewlett, comes Phoo Action – a futuristic kung fu live action drama.

The year is 2012 and London is in the grip of mutant criminals. Only Terry Phoo, a Buddhist kung fu cop, and Whitey Action, an enigmatic young anarchist, can save the nation.

Based on the comic strip Get The Freebies which appeared in The Face magazine, Phoo Action is written by Matthew Enriquez Wakeham, Peter Martin and Jessica Hynes and produced by Matthew Read for BBC Scotland.

Tonight, 9pm, BBC Three. Put it in your diaries, kids.

logger
Why was it live action? It looked really cheap.

And not very good.
Sean of the Dead
Well, at least it shows that Carl Weathers should be a mandatory part of every British television program...
logger
Carl Weathers should be a mandatory part of everything.
Zoe
I enjoyed it, it was good fun. Jaime Winstone was more moody than anarchic, but she did look great in those shorts. Far from perfect, for a pilot though it had potential and some bits did make me chuckle.

It certainly did have the sixties Batman vibe to it.

If they did get a series out of it, they might find it works better at a punchier half hour.

I'm not really familiar with the source material, but from what I have seen the tone seemed a little different, or at least a little toned down. Anyone?
Ade
Arse. I missed it.

So did I, I was killing dragons.

('snot everyday I can say that, so I'm going to use it as I can!).
Blind I/O
It was shit. I wanted to love it, but it almost totally failed to deliver in the first 15 minutes, so I stopped watching.

I say almost because it had Carl Weathers and a girl in tiny pants.

Poor Mr Hewlett - after Monkey, he can't be happy with that.

Agreed. Not so much sixties Batman as nineties kids TV show.

I almost gave up several times, but I stuck it out, and there were little smiles to be had - certainly some of the rolling news headlines were pretty funny (though very difficult to catch because they were so fast). Jaime Winston was surprisingly alright, though. I was sort of waiting for her to make me cringe a lot of the time, but she did a decent job.
Zoe
I agree. It started weakly, but it did improve. I got a few smiles out of it anyway, and as an idea it certainly has potential. Sanjeev Kohli made me laugh a couple of times. I wouldn't go as far as calling it shit.

An hour was probably a bit of a stretch.

It was certainly the oddest programme I've seen at 9pm on a Tuesday, and that can only be a good thing.

I noticed it was directed by Euros Lyn, it certainly did have a touch of the 'New Who' about it.
CazBag
It's repeated again at 10.40 tonight on BBC3 for those wanting to see it and missed it last night.
Sostie
I thought it was OK. I think Hewlett translates better as a cheapish looking Puffnstuff than a Hollywood blockbuster (Tank Girl)

I'd watch a series if there was one.
Zoe
We should start an 'I agree with you' club, Sost.

That I agree with.
I didn't enjoy it that much myself. I couldn't shift the feeling that it could have been so much more than it was & I honestly thought Winston was pretty poor. It's still good to see something of this ilk on television.

Also what was up with use, timing & levels of the music? It was all over the shop.

I liked it. It was a bit of a mess, particularly at the beginning, but it had some very striking sequences, and the ending was very enjoyable.

BBC3 has commissioned a full six-part series, which will air next year.

Wasn't the idea of that there were going to be a series of pilots and we wouldn't know which one won til after?
I might be thinking of something else though.
I don't think it can sustain a series, personally.

Yes, that was what I thought. Phoo action was one of them. I thought there would be a vite or something.

Well, if you'd bothered to read the article:

QUOTE
Phoo Action was one of six drama pilots commissioned by BBC3 controller Danny Cohen to air as part of the relaunched BBC3 schedule

Cohen commissioned a series before Tuesday night's pilot aired. It will be filmed by BBC Scotland in Glasgow later this year.

Other BBC3 pilots will include thriller The Things I Haven't Told You; Being Human, a tale of a vampire, a ghost and a werewolf who share a house; and Mrs In-Betweeny, created by Shameless writer Paul Abbott and Caleb Ranson.

Cohen said at the BBC3 winter 2008 season launch last month that he would commission full series from one or two of the pilots, but was so taken with Phoo Action that he signed it up for a full run quicker than expected.

It is also thought Cohen had to move fast to sign up artist options on the Phoo Action series.
Raven
I tried watching this after Torchwood last night, but lost interest before the first ten minutes were up.

That's not really a reflection on the program, my head just wasn't in the right place to watch it.

I will give it a try again sometime, it's bound to be repeated again.

Consider me chastised.
Kick in the Head
I thought it was interesting, but the problem is that it just smacked of BBC production values, scripting, acting, etc. The design and concept was good (and I did like the Princes and the basketball-headed villain), but too much of it fell flat or didn't quite click/gel (depening on your preferred parlance).

I agree a six-part half-hour series would serve it better, but if you are going to film kung-fu, get rid of the choppy editing and have some actual proper impressive stunts.
whitey
I fucking loved it. Needed more swearing though. And a car chase. And a future episode should have Benny Wong in it. And they should let me write one.
melzilla
Would have liked to catch it but didn't. Anyone know if they are repeat-repeating it?
