Well, since EW hasn't posted this himself yet, I'll chuck it out there for the rest of you few and far between LA types on this board:

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...logID=322251329

Pretty spectacular lineup, E. I'm most excited about the Beyond/Head double header, but I'm planning on hitting at least four of those, possibly five.

Heeeeee.
Sostie
December 2nd-4th - BUGSY MALONE & PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE

December 5th & 6th - FLASH GORDON & DANGER DIABOLIK!

December 7th & 8th - THE LAST BOY SCOUT & KISS KISS, BANG BANG

December 9 & 11th - AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON & TREMORS

December 12 & 13th - TOP SECRET! & BANANAS

December 14th & 15th - BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS & HEAD

December 16th & 17th - RAISING ARIZONA & EVIL DEAD 2

Well right there are some essential double bills. Of course the Spaced Out Cinema would have screened these aaaages ago biggrin.gif

If ever we needed more motivation...
thirtyhelens
The two that you didn't highlight are actually at the top of my list, Sos. laugh.gif

But I'm going to squeeze in as many as I can. I'm SO excited to see Tremors on the big screen again... it doesn't get screened in revival nearly as often as it should.
mcraigclark
I'm seriously considering flying out from the 9th to the 13th. Will have to check on some things first...

edit: Southwest seems to be discontinuing service between DC and LAX as of 11/29. Surely that can't be right. If so, fuck 'em.
thirtyhelens
Hoopla! ... Craig, if you and Andy both turn up, it will be a true meeting of the mods.

*twirls*
melzilla
Wow! Some awesome double bills there. Get to it you lucky LA-ers!!
AusChick
Really a whole lot of classics in there.
December will be a fun month for anyone in LA!

Some, but not all, of the showtimes for Edgar's New Beverly lineup have been posted:

Okay, Edgar is intimating that he may actually produce Paul Williams for us at the Bugsy Malone/Phantom of the Paradise screening on Dec. 2nd.

I just squee'd along with a plucky piano accompaniment.
AusChick
hehehe
Brilliant.

*jealous again*
jem
That is like 2 days away from where I live... I might actually be able to attend that. If I can justify taking even more time off work to cross the border and watch movies.

Holy mother of really cool stuff... ohmy.gif

THE WRIGHT STUFF - GUESTS AND INTROS! UPDATED!

THE WRIGHT STUFF @ The New Beverly – Dec 2nd - 18th

Just when you thought you couldn't get any more excited about Edgar Wright's festival at the New Beverly, we've come to blow your mind. The line up of Edgar's special guests are so incredibly awesome, you are going to thank us profusely for the best Christmas present you have ever received.

The following performances will feature introductions from Edgar and Q&A's with these special guests.

Dec 2nd 7.30pm –
Bugsy Malone & Phantom of the Paradise

On the night of Dec 2nd , Edgar will start off the whole shebang with a very, very special guest. Not only the super talented composer of Bugsy Malone, but the star Phantom Of The Paradise, Mr. Paul Williams.

Yes, that's right, one of America's greatest songwriters will be in the house and talking to Edgar.

Also! December 2nd, at midnight is the Dangerous Business Secret Show, all are invited, and it's something you certainly won't want to miss!

Dec 5th – Flash Gordon & Danger Diabolik – 7.30pm

In attendance with Edgar will be everyone's favorite Flash nemesis, Prince Barin himself, Timothy Dalton.

Then Joe Dante will be helping Edgar introduce Mario Bava's cult classic Danger: Diabolik, with the one, the only Diabolik himself John Phillip Law!

Dec 7th – The Last Boy Scout and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang – 7.30pm

In attendance with Edgar, the writer of Last Boy Scout and the writer / director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, as well as countless other crime classics, Shane Black, will be in attendance!

Dec 10th – American Werewolf in London and Tremors – 7.30pm

You can't get much more brilliant than John Landis, and we've got him! The director of American Werewolf will be in here in person and in conversation with Edgar.

Dec 12th – Top Secret and Bananas – 7.30pm

In attendance with Edgar tonight, a very special guest. When it comes to comedy, the name Zucker ranks high on the list. It doesn't get much funnier than Top Secret, and it doesn't get much more exciting than a Q&A with David Zucker himself!

Dec 14th – Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls (TBC) & Head – 7.30pm

With Edgar. Introducing 'Head'. Mickey Dolenz.

Need we say more?

Dec 16-17 – Raising Arizona & Evil Dead 2

Edgar will introduce the 7.30pm screening on Dec 16th. Special guests and more fun TBC. Eyes, keep em peeled.

If you are anywhere near LA you really should go. How could you not?
That is a seriously amazing line-up.

I'm locked in for the 2nd, 10th and 16th. Going to try to squeeze in at least one more but I'm not sure which...

Yeah Kiss Kiss Bang Bang rocks big time!
thirtyhelens
Sadly, the 7th is one of the ones I definitely can't make because I'm going to be in San Pedro. sad.gif Family shindig. Sucks, but that one's probably gonna be so crowded anyway. Bummer.

I'm thinking probably the 14th, if Harmz wants to come. I would dearly love to see Beyond the Valley of the Dolls on the big screen, I never have. And I know that movie by heart.

Susaaaan! I'm simply in a RAAAAAAGE! laugh.gif
rabbit57i
Well, I'm disappointed that Mickey Dolenz wasn't your first choice in the first place.

The Daltonator! I'd love to be there for that.

I wish I could get to LA for these!

I thought you might say that. wink.gif

Believe me, I've got nothing but love for Circus Boy. I'm being stupidly practical - even though I've never seen Beyond on the big screen (Head I have, it's at the Mods & Rockers fest every few years it seems), there are other ones I want to see more that get shown in revival less.

I've got to see Phantom since I'm still burning about missing the LACMA/ DePalma festival screening. tongue.gif (Though I did get to see The Fury, which was buh-rilliant but had no guests.)

The first (& unfortunately still only) time I saw Beyond The Valley of the Dolls was on the big screen. It was one of those films my brother told me I had to see and he still had to drag me there. Of course he was right as always...the greatest film eva. happy.gif
thirtyhelens
I may yet cave, unless there's something else that night that I deem unmissable for Harmony while she's here. wink.gif (UCB hasn't posted their December schedule yet.)

I bet Cynthia Myers' norks writ large is pretty hhhawesome.

Jealousy ain't what it's all cracked up to be. It only causes more pain for you. And me. I'm jealous, too, dagnabbit!

Incidentally, Firefox does not underline "ain't" in red, to indicate a typo...

Is "ain't" not a real word?

And the best cure for jealousy I've found is to live vicariously through others.
Actually, it's not so much a cure as a mildy effective herbal remedy, but it's better than nothing.

*edit* Firefox does however underline "mildy" as a typo - but I stupidly posted it that way anyway. Obviously I meant to type "mildly" but I wont correct it now, lest this sentence make any less sense than it already does. Or something.

I'm gonna try to get to the Evil Dead one ... I live in L.A. but will be out of town for the Bugsy showing. Bugsy Malone is a fantastic movie.
thirtyhelens
Last night... was... FAB. Packed house, loads of familiar faces and musical mayhem. Lined up about 2 hours before showtime, which became 2 1/2 as they were running waaaaay late... resulting in my now miserable sore throat, but it was worth it. An OK print of Bugsy which was apparently the cause of the late start (still an amazing film), and a fucking PRISTINE print of Phantom with the genial, bubbly, and totally endearing Paul Williams in the house. Man, he's a sprightly 67 years young. And just saw Shaun of the Dead yesterday and was raving about it. biggrin.gif

I took a couple of really crap photos which I'll post later, once I get some more green tea in me and am feeling a little better. *swallow* Urgh.
AusChick
Ooh sounds brilliant!
Thanks for sharing Nic.

Yum green tea.
Look after that throat of yours!
CazBag
Glad you had a great time Nic! Thanks for telling us all about it. Hope the throat improves - eat lots of Strepsils!
AusChick
Damn it!
I've got that stupid New Kids on the Block song in my head again.

You've got the Wright Stuff, baby...
thirtyhelens
I've had a mouthful of eucalyptus sucky sweets all day, Caz. wink.gif

Okay, as promised... good shots of the brilliant Phantom memorabilia that was on display, and two crap shots of Edgar and Paul Williams I took from my seat (which I think I was frozen into for a short time. Brr.)

I think my camera somehow got switched to 1 megapixel... bah. Anyway, Edgar's got much nicer shots up on the blog now.

Best bit of overheard dialogue all night:
Edgar: "Is it OK if I come back there and get some coffee?"
The adorable Julia of the New Beverly, behind the concession stand: "Of course it is. You work here now!"

No more reporting from me till the 10th, I'm afraid.

I'm doing the dance as we speak;)

Great pics Nic! Feel better!!!!
thirtyhelens
Sooooo... night four of The Wright Stuff. Werewolf. Tremors. Landis. Underwood. Maddock. And a fuckload of very loud geeks. biggrin.gif

Really, really terrific night - was pleased to be there with LA Julie who was seeing Werewolf for the first time (she was one of maybe five virgins in the house, and I felt terrible later for nudging her hand up when they called out the first timers and John Landis pointed right at her and barked "What did you think?!"....poor dear totally froze. I promise, I won't do it again, Jules!). As always, it plays like a dream and looks remarkably fresh after 26 years. John L. never, ever disappoints in a Q&A, either, and as per his usual MO he completely took over the mike for a boisterous and utterly un-PC cavalcade of anecdotes. With Li'l Eball Wright sat next to him, hanging on his every word with a faint glint of "I can't fucking believe this!" in his eyes. Brilliant. Tremors was an archival answer print and it looked AMAZING - I don't think it looked that good when I saw it in first run, a true joy to watch after quite some time with a packed house of fans. Underwood and Maddock were also lovely and great fun to listen to.

Damn shame we definitely won't be able to make another till the last one on Sunday - Dolls and Head was a possibility, but we got tickets to the strike benefit at UCLA on Friday. D'oh! - so it's swan song for me, Harmonica Caravan and La Jules this weekend. Eyyyy.

Double les postes: Edgar pimpin' the double bills on one of our local morning shows.

Note: The energy levels of morning "news" show anchors do not necessarily reflect those of the greater Los Angeles area at large.
AusChick
I think it's safe to say that morning show hosts everywhere are in no way representative of the energy levels of the human race at large!

I liked that they seemed to have a decent sense of humour though - and a good grip on what was actually going on.

There is a really bad morning show host here called David Reyne (brother of James Reyne for anyone familiar with the 80s group "Australian Crawl") who is one of the dumbest people around. Someone came on to talk about a medical trial and he got all excited about the results of the placebos. He said "Well I don't know much about Placebos but it sounds like they were really effective. Can't we start getting these placebos out to the general public so that they can have those benefits too?" huh.gif

There is actually a great recurring segment on that particular morning show where the guy in the helicopter goes looking for the dag-nastiest, grungiest, junked-up disgusting backyards and they circle around it and play the music from "Sanford & Son". Slightly mean? Yes. And also hysterical.
AusChick
Heh!
Nice.

It's been lovely reading Edgar's blogs about each of these nights. He certainly loves to share his excitement about these events. Geek-joy! happy.gif

Exhausted. Lack of sleep. Must make up for it tonight (except that I have to get Harmz off in the shuttle and go to work tomorrow... fark!).

But it was worth it to sit through not only Raising Arizona and Evil Dead 2, but the notorious Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky for the first time. Thank god I never got around to hunting it down, as I can't imagine a better audience to watch it with. (Except for the git behind us who kept groaning "Oh, my gaaaahd.... ohhh, for fuck's...ohhh, lord.... this is terrible!" Of course it is, you twat, didn't Edgar basically tell you as much? That's why it's AWESOME. laugh.gif)

And thus went Teh Wright Stuff. Darn, that's the end.
