A ride with the Stig?
You'd have more chance with Tennant.

I thought the space suits River Song and her mates were wearing the other week were very 'Stig'.

Watching the trailer for the next episode makes me wish that they had the balls to have the Doctor regenerate in the middle of a big finale two-parter. Meaning that in the second half he would have to get over regeneration "sickness" in time to save the day.

RT have done covers with companions at the forefront before. She's a very popular returning character, and the Doctor gets plenty of coverage, I can't see the problem myself.
Finally watched 'Midnight' and, although it's a rip off of at least two Twilight Zone episodes, it's the best episode RTD has written so far. Fair enough, the plot wasn't amazing, it was largely carried by brilliant performances, and it fitted more in the TZ ouvre than DW; but it was a tense, entertaining and specifically SF 45 minutes of TV. Which is more than RTD has ever managed before. Apologies for all the acronyms, I'm tired.
Depressing review (and spoilers) for next week, in that it sounds really shit.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to watch 'The Monsters are Due on Maple Street'.

I haven't read the DS review, but the synopsis in the Radio Times sounds good, and they've also given it a good review, but then again they are in the habbit of selling programs . . .
I'm looking forward to it.

Digital Spy isn't a fansite; though you're right about holding off judgement.
Something in the tone of the review depresses me though, it all sounds very RTD.

Some of hte bits in the review seemed very nitpicky... That's why I thought it read a bit fanboy...

I haven't seen 'Midnight' yet, but I watched 'Forest of Trees' last night. What a bloody great episode. I loved the fact that all the small details of the previous episode actually came back to be meaningful at the end - the 'echo' in the digital recorder saving River, characters you thought had been killed off ended up being important to the ending, and some wonderful performances by Alex Kingston, David Tennant and Catherine Tate. If only all DW episodes were that beautifully plotted...but then again I think you wouldn't truly appreciate the great ones if there weren't some weaker episodes as well.

An interesting point, are the Moffat stories really that good, or are they made to look better than they are by the sub-standard quality of the episodes around them?
Personally, I'd have to say that The Girl in the Fireplace and Blink are two of the best episodes of any program I have seen, The Empty Child/Doctor Dances less so, but they are still very good. I'm not really sure about Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead at the moment, I really need to watch them through in one hit, but I must say I wasn't as taken with them initially as I was with Moffat's other offerings - perhaps it is because they are much more complex than his other episodes and I still need to get my head around them!

I'm all about the design psychologicals, though. Most people wouldn't probably notice, or indeed care if they did. It just bugs me because the design layout is wrong.
It should be either Rose on her own, the three companions with Rose at the front or Rose side by side with The Doctor. It's just a bad layout for a finale promo.

Comments - of a non-spoilery kind - from SFX's Ian Berriman on episode 12 (next week's episode!):
QUOTE
"Episode 12 is ABSOLUTELY BLEEDIN' MENTAL and SUPER-DOOPER-FANWANKY. They'll have to power-hose the squee off the walls of the Outpost Gallifrey forums a week on Saturday.
"It feels a bit like a nostalgic Russell flicked through Doctor Who: The Encyclopedia and went 'Oooh, yeah, that was good - I'll have some of that. And them. And her. And bring in that wotsit from that throwaway line in episode X.' Whilst throwing his head back, hooting with laughter, and booming 'MARVELLOUS!' It's like watching the entire new series so far compressed into a blipvert.
"Ming-mong-kryptonite, then, and there's a danger that the sheer density of it will give casual viewers concussion, but I spent 45 minutes whooping and bellowing with laughter at the sheer don't-give-a-toss audacity of it, and am about to watch it all over again IMMEDIATELY. I bloody loved it, even though there's a slim chance I'll think it's a big pile of tits once I've calmed down sufficiently to be dryly rational - in, say, about three years' time."

'Midnight' was great - much more of a thriller than a classic Who episode, but it was nice to have a 'small' concept episode like this one after the huge, sprawling epic of the two-parter last week. I liked all the performances and the study of how quickly people can change when they feel trapped or threatened. Tennant had me all emotional when he was being controlled by Mrs Sylvestri - you could see a hugely physical struggle going on, yet he never moved.

I don't watch it all that much so there was a lot going on tonight that I presume was to do with past episodes. I liked it when the Doc told Donna she was brilliant.

It was okay - I don't like RTD (as I have said oft before). He switches from sentimental cliche to lightness all too swiftly and without progression. The whole lets all murder Johnny Foreigner was only saved by the excellent and underated acting of Sir Bernard of Cribbins. Billie is usually great but they gave her lots of technobabble to speak and it didn't work.
I also found the 'all-star' nature to be an unnecessary indulgence even though he probably meant to review the series from a different angle. All his plotlines too, wasn't it? Fat babies, Sontarans.
Also giant bloody beetles. Like Rhinos. Just plain daft. Reminded me of a certain Kids in the Hall sketch about a spider.
The opening sequence was far too Firefly. But i didn't mind it overall.

Probably the best episode RTD has written so far. The call backs were good and tied in well but I'm not sure about England suddenly becoming a Nazi style state. That seemed a bit paint-by-numbers end of the world scenario to stick in a sci-fi show.
Otherwise I liked it and it kept up the good work of the series as a whole.
Next week's had better not be a let down.

I thought it was better than most RTD episodes but I also think there was a lot wrong with it too. The shitty plastic beetle, Rose and her terrible chav accent saved only by the acting of Bernard Cribbins who was pure class.
I felt kind of let down by it, there was this big build up for the return of Rose and quite frankly it couldve been handled a lot better.
RTD has pulled out all of the stops for his final episodes what with Torchwood being involved and Sarah-Jane et al, I just hope he doesnt let it all go to his head and we end up with a load of pretentious wank again. The Dalek laugh wasnt amiss, sounded very effeminate too

The multiverse is in peril from the darkness?
It's Crisis On Infinite Earths!
Anyway, it was quite enjoyable, I even coped with Donna, although the tour round the Tardis gave us what must be the longest ever bit of open mouthed 'acting' Tate's ever done (and that's saying something).
And I'm glad it wasn't just me that thought Billie's voice was off. She's gone all Ronan Keating when she pronounshes her eshes.
