I enjoyed it mostly but it showed me how glad I am that David Morrissey won't be the next Doctor. Great actor but I'd be bored with him within two episodes.
The plot that wasn't about the Doctors was a bit thin - as in I can hardly remember why the Cybermen were even in it, three days later - and I agree with Glenn that the appearance of the giant Cybermonster-ship-thing was a cause of great hilarity.

It rocks.
Fans of the Hot Fuzz soundtrack might notice the sample of "Blockbuster" in there too.

I enjoyed the Christmas episode - I thought the plot was a little melodramatic, but it kind of suited the Victorian setting to have a melodrama! Morrissey was great, but I don't think he got to really stretch himself that much which was a little bit of a waste.

I was watching Star Trek: First Contact last night, and had a thought; after years of ribbing Trek fans that the Borg are dopplegangers of the Cybermen, they can now take the piss out of Who, because let's face it, Hartigan was a blatant rip-off of the Borg Queen. Albeit not a very good one.

Sounds about right to me. I'm wondering if the Confidential is going to show any 'new' footage, or just be cobbled from past shows. Probably the latter, I'd think.

I don't know this for sure, but I think it may be an edited down version of the Confidential they showed on Christmas Day on BBC Three (the full length version of which is being shown again at 8pm on BBC Three tonight).

No its not because Simon Pegg is narrating the one on Saturday (tomorrow) and Tony Head did the Xmas Day one besides BBC 3 news has just announced that it will be revealing who the 11th Doctor will be tomorrow too.
Coincidently, two more names have popped up....James Frain and Chiwetel Ejiofor had made the shortlist apparently for 11th Doc.

It was just a guess on my part, hence the "I don't know this for sure" comment, but the write ups for both programs in the Radio Times are pretty similar.

I'm a bit disappointed it isn't Paterson Joseph but it'll be interesting to see how this pans out. At least it'll please the people who were claiming that you wouldn't be able to do any historical stories with a black Doctor. For as we know, history is all about middle class white people.
Why is he so young though? That isn't fair.

Only judging on a couple of clips they showed on the programme, but he can do doctor-ish.
And he has an unusual look about him too, rather than going for the handsome type like tennant.

It's not as good a choice as they could have gone with, but I'm optimistic about Matt Smith in the role. I've seen him in quite a few things and he's always impressed me, most obviously in Ruby In The Smoke, which he was really great in. Should be interesting.

Jan 3 2009, 06:36 PM
I think the thing that worries me about him at the moment is the fact that he had no eyebrows. It's really the one thing I ask from any Doctor.
However, from previous form he seems to be more than competent and if the scripts are good then he should be fine. Dr Who casting always seems to confound expectations so I'm hoping for a fairly entertaining series next year.

Jan 3 2009, 06:39 PM
I think the fact that Steven Moffat is confident in him is the strongest indicator of his potential.
He should definitely get a haircut, though.

He could stick some of the hair trimmings above his eyes thus giving the appearance of eyebrows. That would sort it.

My parents (Who fans from day 1) aren't impressed that the Doctor is going to be younger than any of their children. Not at all sure how this choice will play out with the older audience demographics.
I agree he needs a haircut. I've not watched the programmes he's been in before - apart from perhaps one episode of Party Animals in which he clearly made no impact whatsoever on me. So I will reserve judgement on his suitability.

As a direct result of Tennants face, if the new Doctor isn't beautiful I don't care. From what I can tell, this appears to be the minority opinion right now. As a few people have said, Moffatt seems to like him so that's in his favour. And true, Davison was young, but he was an established actor when he took on the role. But I'm finding it hard to warm to the idea of Smith at the moment.
