I have journeyed to an alternate world.
I went to university with Matt Smith, he was a first year when I was a third year in the drama department at UEA.
This will be VERY weird.
ETA: I remembered he was actually only one year below me.

His hair and outfit are both unnacceptable. I read he has been in a few things with Billie Piper.... figures, huh.

When he popped up on screen I had initial misgivings, but as he and others talked about him taking the role I started to see why they chose him. He's got an enigmatic edge and I think he will fit well with Moffatt's probable darker turn with the series when it returns with him at the helm.
I knew they would go for someone under 30 so I'm not too fussed that he's younger than me and I knew they wouldn't go for someone particularly established so I don't feel disappointed by the choice. Saying that, I had been hoping for Rafe Spall but you can't have everything. David Tennant still remains the prettiest Doctor.

There are a lot of people, wrongly I think, assuming that Moffat is going to take the series down a darker path. He has already said that it won't be a "Blink" style episode every week, and that he is intending to keep the same mix of episodes as Davis has (some light hearted, some serious etc).
I know it is what a lot of fans want, but I can't see them going for a "darker" take on the series as that will probably put off the mass audience that is tuning in every week.

Oh I don't doubt there'll still be fun in series 5, I just think the darker turns will have a bit more meat than RTD's stories and so have a bit more punch. Matt Smith looks like he'll be able to take those switches of tone well.

The hair is a disappointment though. Tennant did it with style, this is just exaggerated to hell.....plus the large forehead is strangely off putting at the moment. All of which is cosmetic, its how he takes on the role itself and how he portrays himself on screen in that role that matters more.

Will reserve judgement until I see the shows in 2010. I'll be 31 by then and more disagreeable.
I do trust the choice of Moffles though, even though he did get me mildly excited by hinting he'd hired a 40 year old.
What I will say is he's just a bit, well, Merrick, y'know facially.

Jan 4 2009, 09:25 PM
I'm sure he didn't used to look that odd facially at university. I think he's lost weight since then which has made him look more gaunt and odd.
I can certainly say he was a spectacular actor at uni and I always got on really well with him, so I wish him the best with it. It's just a bit strange that I won't be able to lust after the Doctor any more.

He appears to have Ade Hands™ as well!
He just sort of looks right for the part, I'm not sure why, but he has the air of a timelord. I like his enthusiasm and vaguely gothic otherworldliness, and I'm pleased he's not already in the public consiousness.
I am very optimistic, regardless of the fact he's younger than I am.

Now I just wait for my inevitable casting as his lunatic assistant.

I will make no (or at least few) judgements on the choice of Mr Smith. Had Tennant been introduced the same way (and without me seeing Casanova beforehand) I would probably have given him the same Mark & Lard style whoooooooooooooooooooo? reaction I gave Smith. And he turned out alright didn't he?
Still, Sean Pertwee would have been nice.

Fassbender should win this for being both a fantastic actor and all-round sexy bitch.
I am all ho-hum about Matt Smith mainly because he reminds me of that appalling shovel-faced Pattinson boy or Oddbod from Carry On Screaming (sorry for being mean). So we'll see. I think he is too young and seems a bit drama-school in his acting from what I've seen but all depends on plot and dialogue from now on. Future developments should be interesting and may mean companions go against previous type which is needed - so I am looking on the bright side.

On seeing more photos, I concur that Matt needs a good feed and a bracing walk (to put some roses into his pallid cheeks) before embarking on Doctor Who. And maybe even a nice big hug from jolly people who aren't bony and titless insincere media types (they are his future for the next few years). Therefore, I invite him for a weekend in Spaced-Out River Cottage for japes and tum filling.
However, there are tasks to be completed before. Zoe should exchange his no doubt flimsy and stained London hat and coat for something more fitting for the country. Whilst Sostie, Raven and Adam get in that scullery and start peeling them veggies for the pot. I will search the countryside for berries and nuts. I can forage. Anyone help me?

I couldn't. The whole point of 'fresh young Matt' was a break from the norm. If they just pick the same old type of assistant, then it defeats the purpose of new and edgy format. Plus, with their floppy hair and big chins, they look like brother and sister and that will be odd.

His casting is about as edgy as a satsuma, to quote the Boosh. If they'd wanted edgy they should've cast Nesbitt or Paterson, instead of going for a nice bland middle-class boy. Just my opinion, and I'm sure many will disagree with me, but I see nothing 'fresh' or 'edgy' about him at all.
