'Dear John' looks bloody awful. 'Love brought them together. Will fate tear them apart?'. Urgh.
Anyway, this is pretty much spot on, but a little spoiler-y for the aformentoined 'Dear John'.

It's been kicking around for a while and I can't say I'm thrilled about the idea. Monsters Inc. is one of those wonderfully self-contained films (especially the final shot, which is lovely) and I don't know what they could do with it that would recapture what made the first one great. I've a great deal faith in Pixar and hope that they have only committed to it because someone has thought of a good story for it, but I'm more anxious about it than excited.

Same. They'll either bring the little kid back in or it'll be years later when ages older and doesn't believe in monsters anymore is my worry.
maian
Apr 23 2010, 03:25 PM
The latter one seems more likely if they want to keep Boo as a major character. Since they recorded all her lines in the first film by following her around and recording the silly little girl things she said, it'd make more sense just to have her as a grown up than to try to recreate that spontaneity. The most likely plot would probably be Sully or Mike (probably Mike, thinking on it) getting lost in the human world and Boo hiding him.

Although it sounds like a bad idea, Pixar hasn't gone wrong yet. And remember, it takes so damn long to make those movies that it'll have been in production for at least 5 years already. It'll be well thought-out.
Pixar isn't Dreamworks, they do put a Hell of a lot of time, love, and craft into their work. I really don't think the artists involved would do it unless they knew something we didn't - ie that it's going to be great.

I'm hoping Nolan sticks to his guns and doesn't have Catwoman or Penguin in there. They just wouldn't work in the current style of Batman movies. Riddler would be awesome, but they'll need someone else in there too, as Riddler's too weak a villain on his own.

May 1 2010, 03:06 PM
I've always been quite fond of that rumour that dogged the second film pretty much up until it started shooting that Philip Seymour Hoffman would play the penguin. The character wouldn't really make much sense in the universe of his films, but as a hypothetical piece of casting I found it quite funny and intriguing.

May 1 2010, 03:42 PM
Black Mask and / or Hush would work brilliantly I think. Although I have to disagree about the Riddler not being a strong enough character to work on his own. If they leaned more towards the angle that he's a criminal whose OCD makes him leave clues it could be brilliant.

This. I can't see any of the villains working out really except perhaps Deadshot.
Although - Michael Emerson would make a better Penguin than Riddler. He doesn't have that manic energy. Hoffman would be terrible. I think he is hugely overated. Toby Jones (the better Capote) would be far more interesting instead.

and, now for the bad news...
having watched the trailer and had a read; the film is simply some of the polska films jupiter adaptations, re-edited, with a new score. in our other moomin exchange, i mentioned the german versions with the happy music and none of the dread and weirdy magic of the english adaptation (where episodes were re-edited from the german / polish versions) - this seems much closer to them...
basically, it seems that this has been done as the beloved fuzzy-felt versions were never given scandanavian releases due to legal wrangles with jupiter films...
i think the nice voice actors may also be for the finnish version, as they don't sound like they're voicing the english dub...

I think they'd be too ridiculous to be in Nolan's version, since he's always strived to create a universe that is more based in reality and away from the superpowers. If he's said that he's never going to do the Penguin and Catwoman because they're too silly, then Poison Ivy and Bain are definitely not going to be on the cards.

As Lewis said many moons ago, having JGL as Robin would be interesting. A gay BDSM couple would be perfect cover story for all that midnight skulking and mysterious bruises. It would also be volcanic hotness.
I hope they don't get any villainness. Nolan cannot cast actresses - somebody had to pick Gyllenhaal for him.

I think Bain might be do-able. Genetic tom-foolery isn't really a super power.
He could be an ex smack head looking for a fix that gets picked up by a nefarious scientist type.
Would make for some great action scenes and offer a nice contrast to the mind bending riddles getting thrown up by The Riddler.
EDIT: Might have the fans up in arms because it's not true to the source material.

Sequel, from what I can tell, in that it takes place after Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but 'spin-off' is more accurate, since it just takes Brand's character and makes him the star.

She be a far more fun on a date than Natalie Smugman talking about vegan activism or Israel or some other bullshit - or Kate Boringsworth who seems sweet but frail and paranoid and prone to Edwardian faintings (like a 'white geisha' to quote Liz Lemon). You could take Megan for a beer and play pool and tell her dirty jokes and she'd laugh.
