I'm not sure if this is aimed at me,
It wasn't. I've had people say this to me elsewhere and not here. I should have, perhaps, been clearer on that. SOz.

I'm not saying that people who are drawn in by the trailer who aren't aware of the comic are unworthy in any way, just that I didn't think that it showed enough to entice that audience or did enough to sell it as anything other than just another comic book adaptation, which it shouldn't be since the source material is really very good.
It was very formulaic (on secondary viewing) for the reasons Adam pointed out but the ideas shown (which are ultimately from the comic) are intriguing even in a cheesy, slo-mo goth rock promo way. All film promos about 'superheroes' kinda look like this now. It is to be expected now. Studios control the promos and they aren't daring or original.
And - for people with a vague awareness of the characters (such as I), I was far far more interested in finding out about Dr Manhattan, Roscharch and the Comedian precisely because they
aren't dressed in spandex and doing the same-old stuff. They are very different from the norm usual 'superheroes' stock characters (such as the misunderstood annoying adolescent or anti-hero in the wilderness etc etc) and have since looked more into the movie as a result.
Re-watching the trailer, I thought some of it seemed a bit X-Men even down to the actress playing Silk Spectre II channelling Rebecca Romijn with her slinky walk. But hopefully - that is just the trailer. And I also saw the Downey Jr comparison too.
