In my opinion, and as hokey as it probably looks now, I still feel the first film was
by far the best of the series. It was a budget flick at the time, and most of the 'special effects' look bloody terrible now, but the genuinely surreal nature of the nightmares (long-armed-Freddie included), coupled with the excellent theme (best horror theme since 'Halloween') just enhanced the downright creepiness.
If they can replicate that same surreal edge, and with a decent budget behind it to ensure the FX aren't utter gash, it could be improved no end. I reckon Thornton is a fantastic casting, and I really look forward to seeing what they do with it.
