Casting details for the new update of Terry Nation's Survivors have started to leak out, and it looks as though Freema Agyeman is set to star in the new series which also features fellow New Who actor Shaun Dingwall (Pete Tyler).

You can find out more about it here: Agyeman Cast In Survivors.

Will anyone else but the middle class* survive this time?

*except for rogues and villains.

Watched about half of Survivors, I stopped watching when the Scottish bird came back to life. I'm quite outraged that people are getting paid money for this rubbish, somebody should resign.

Survivors was okay, but suffered from being a BBC production. Seeing familiar British actors lessened their impact as new characters, and the lack of gore and obvious low action budget made the outbreak interesting in concept alone. And the concept still resonates, highlighting our reliance on technology and complete ignorance of practical skills, but the rest of the story felt familiar: disparate strangers meeting, looting petrol stations, abandoned cities, etc, have been seen in zombie and disaster movies for years. Even the 'twist' at the end felt more like a throwaway line in Doctor Who, than the earth-shattering revelation it should have been. I may give further episodes a try, but based on the opener I can't see it holding my interest for long.

Survivors was okay. I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic stories. I like the fact that if the world does have such a crisis there wouldn't be a single female survivor I wouldn't kick out of bed.

About time the BBC (or someone) repeated/remade Z For Zachariah

I enjoyed it but I found myself on edge everytime a curtain was opened or someone came across a fresh corpse. Not having them reach out and try to bite someone confused me. Still, it was, as always, interesting to see a post apocolyptic programme set in Britain but there were some shockingly poor "action" pieces. The explosion at the petrol station was hilariously bad, complete with jumping away from it in true blue screen glory. I will be continuing watching though.

Survivors was big fat 'meh'. Paterson Joseph is teh cool, though.

Big fat agreement there! I remember reading the book when I was about 10 years old. Didn't the Beeb version have Jeremy Irons in it or did I dream that? (/edit: it was Anthony Andrews)

Survivors was OK, but I did think that there should be a hell of a lot more bodies lying around in the streets and outside hospitals etc. And you just know kinda-sexy scottish lady will find her son. Still I will probably end up watching it til the end.

They did. I always used to think it was Irons but it was Anthony Andrews. They showed it at our school because we read the book in English. Advice to teachers - if you are going to show a TV play in lessons make sure there isn't a scene where a bloke gets his cock out. It's amazing how the appearance of a cock can turn an engrossed audience into a crowd of guffawing kids.

Same here, but sadly this has more of a Last Train vibe to it than Day of the Triffids.

I was only half watching it to start with, so I didn't really understand what was happening with the main woman in it - one minute she was dead, the next she wasn't - but I was quite surprised that Dingwell and Agyerman didn't make it to the end of the episode, given that they both feature prominently in the publicity photos etc.

I will watch on Tuesday, but it's hard to see how this is going to develop in an interesting way.

It is almost as if Hugo Drax were in charge!

I'll ditto what's been said about Survivors. My brother and I spent the whole episode going, "But where's PJ?". The empty streets were very effective if unlikely (sure everyone was told to stay home, but a little more signs of chaos would've been appreciated), but if I see one more montage of fast-moving people and germ/DNA graphics in a virus outbreak TV show or film, I'll tut REALLY LOUD! wink.gif

Aaaah, but Freema and the Scottish woman, were the only ones to mention the lump under the arm. Maybe she's woken up?

And what happened about the dog in the car? Did he leave it to die?

I thought that about Freema but she was with a doctor at the time so you'd think she would have checked her out a bit more thoroughly than the Scottish woman's wife. Plus, doing that did give it all a bit more of an "anyone could go" feel. The trailers did ruin it a little bit though as you knew who was and wasn't going to make it through to the next episode.

That was magnificent. I shouted 'SUPER JOHNSON!' as he soared through the air.

I must admit, that although I have seen the trailers a few times I had completely failed to pick up on that.

Well last night's episode was better than I was expecting it to be, but it's still not firing on all cylinders by a long way.

There are a few of things I found puzzling last night:

1) If they have a group of armed thugs on their doorstep, why not just move?
2) Why are none of them planning for the future - why aren't they looking for a suitable farm or similar?
3) Why did Joseph's character just accept that the chap with the broken leg had died? (and why didn't he initially offer to take him back to the group as well?!).

And there are more pretty women! What a brilliantly selective virus!
Zoe
It's not a documentary.

I like that it doesn't make sense, but not as much as I like the dialogue, which is hi-larious. I'm not sure why you'd get so possessive over Netto, I think they should just drive to the nearest Waitrose for a higher class of looting.

I can't decide whether I want Max Beesley to go batshit or turn into a hero, but either way I loves him.

No, of course it's not, but there are still things I would be expecting them to be doing that are more profitable than just going door-to-door foraging in people's houses.

Perhaps I've read Day of the Triffids too many times, but my first reaction would be to clear out of the towns, find a moderately self sufficient farm (power and water etc) and to then raid larger warehouses for cases of stores, rather than someone's kitchen for their half used jars of coffee!

S'funny though innit?

"Boo hoo hoo, all this chicken catching fun reminds me of that man I accidentally killed"

Who played the blond lass who had poor old Bob pussy whipped?

It's bugging the hell out of me.
Raven
Robyn Addison.

Cheers Raven.

She must look like someone else famous, I don;t watch any of the shows she's been in before.

I wonder who it is?
Jimmay
I thought it was alright and I'm going to keep on watching. The next episode seems to be going along the lines of what you said they should do Raven.
gulfcoast_highwayman
I've decided that the blond lass reminds me of Emma Amos, who played Gary Sparrow's wife (version 2.0) in Goodnight Sweetheart.

Last night's episode was an enthralling study of the subject of incaceration. Whether it be the scared family shut away in their farm, the embryonic Government trapped by it's need to enforce order, the scientists hiding from their own creation, or the chickens being introduced to their new Wendy house & wire home. While the destruction of humanity has offered everyone more freedom, are they all really just trapped in a self imposed prison?

Nah! It was a big improvement on the last episode, with someone getting shot in the head and a nearly nude bath scene.
Jimmay
I thought last night's episode was fantastic. Genuine tension and some real emotional twists and turns, especially with the trapped family. The scene where Jospeh and Beesley realised that they may have inadvertently killed that girl was great.

However, why the hell didn't the pair who were caught stealing just ask for some food or ask to join them I don't know? And how did that guy open his eyes in a bath filled with bleach and not go blind? Anyway, I loved it and can't wait for next week's episode.

The trapped family was a great idea. Next week's looks a bit too "Lord Of The Flies"

I turned it off before next week's preview. Didn't want to spoil anything.

I am developing a thing for Robbie Williams' mate Max Beesley.

I just hope the new series is written by people with some sort of nounce for the situation. So far it is so laughable as to be almost side splitting, but maybe it has gone farther than that, it is now just damn annoying!

Think about it. You are a survivor. Week after week you run into people with guns ready and willing to kill you. What is the first thing that you do? Make some biscuits and rob a local Aldi market? Pinch a few pints of water and bag of crisps from a filling station? Drive around in nice cars which just happen to have plenty of pertrol in them while looking for a nice place to walk into and not pay for your weekly shopping? NO! NO! NO! The first thing you do is tool up yourself of course, that's the first thing you do - it's called self presevation. No matter how much of a pacifist you are (and there's no real evidence that this lot are pacifists) you will either die quickly or you'll arm yourself and be a true survivor. This bunch of numpties can't be blamed though for their inannactions on the arming front becasue it is down to writers who have never been out of an office in their scrawny little lives and had to live off the land for more than a couple of hours, or been away from a cash and carry where they can use their credit cards to get out of trouble. If you are going to write something like this then at least give it a bit more realism for gods sake!
