This might not work, but it could be interesting.
This is an attempt to compile a list of movies that are universally loved by the members of Spaced Out.
How does it work?
Anyone can nominate a film that they believe is loved by one and all. Just post your suggestions and see what comments follow. But please, try not to deluge the thread with suggestions and lists of films.
If 5 (or more) people agree that it deserves a place it will appear on the list below.
How do you decide if it meets the "greatest" criteria?
If it is a film you personally rate 7.5 or more out of 10.
Can a film be removed from the list?
Yes. If one member truly believes it does not deserve a 7.5 rating, it will be removed.
Obviously if you haven't seen the movie, don't vote.
if you take time to nominate, please take time to also vote.
Let's see if it works.

Any opinion on the first 3?

I'd like to make two additions to this list:
The Proposition: I really liked this film and I'm sure some others on here did too.
Breaking the Waves: I suspect that this will not make the list in the end due to people either not liking it or not having seen it but I had to nominate it anyway as I think it's incredible.

Jul 10 2008, 01:55 PM
It's early days so I'm not having a go at anyone
If anyone is going to nominate films, could we at least have a "yay" or "nay" for some of those that are on the nominated list, otherwise we are stuck with just a list of movies individuals like!
"Yes" to
The Proposition by the way

It will probably not make the list, but you are right, and it deserves a place over most of the LOTR films...

Nearly everything so far is a yes for me, they'd all get over 7.5, except...
'The Proposition', which probably wouldn't scrape a 5 from me, because it's so bloody boring.
Lord Sostie, strike it from the list!

Svein
Jul 10 2008, 02:01 PM
I cannot comment on The Proposition or Breaking the Waves, as I have never seen them, although I can't imagine there are many films that can out do LOTR, but then again... personal choice and all that...
Agree with Jaws, Empire and Raiders...

I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree with this. Whether a film is depressing or not, does not mean it's not great. Spielberg has yet to reach the brilliance that he created on that film!

Remember, you can say no to anything that has been "inducted".
Additionally, if a film is removed from the "inducted" list they can be re-instated if the person who votes "no" later watches the film and re-considers their vote.
Anchorman wouldn't have been a "yes" vote for me on first viewing but would after my second.

Can I suggest the 7.5 thing be changed to 8 or even 9 out of ten.
For example I'd give the simpsons movie a 7.5 out of 10, but I certainly wouldn't consider it for a definitive greatest film list.

A bit late to change the suggested score now.
Despite the title, this more an attempt to find the films that people here universally love as opposed to the greatest films ever.

But how can you say no to The Matrix? I feel it's a film whose sequels seem to have gone back and made the original shit too. If you just take the first one as it is, and ignore the rest, it's still a damn good flick.

I think it's horrible. It's a stupid film wrapped up in an insultingly thin veneer of intelligence that people seem to buy into. I think it doesn't just insult the intelligence of it's viewers, it does so in a way that leaves them feeling clever when they've just spent 100 minutes being talked down to and patronised.
Of course, that's just my opinion. Feel free to disagree. Most of the people I know do. Violently.
