Thought this might be fun.......
Apparently this was UK No. 1 when I entered the world

According to Wikepedia it was:
QUOTE
"Cinderella Rockefella" was a novelty single written by Mason Williams and Nancy Ames, and most famously released by the Israeli duo group Esther and Abi Ofarim, a married couple, in 1968.
The song features rather yodelling, somewhat 1920s style lyrics and music.
According to Radio Caroline DJ Andy Archer, the song was the last to be played on Radio Caroline South on the night of March 2-3 1968, before its radio ship (like that of its sister station Radio Caroline North) was towed into harbour over unpaid debts on the morning of March 3.
I have no idea what it sounds like though. It features yodelling..........

It's a kitsch classic and I can almost guarantee when you hear it you'll recongnise it.
See if it's on YouTube.

On my birth day it was:
UB40, guest vocals by Chrissie Hynde - "I Got You Babe"
This may explain my mum's great love of UB40.

For me, it was Maria McKee - Show Me Heaven. I'm glad, as I really like that song.
In the US, it was George Michael - Praying For Time. I don't know if I've heard that one so I won't comment.

Apparently number 1 in the U.S. was ''Glory of Love'' Peter Cetera (no fucking clue on that one). Bah, a few weeks either way and it could have been Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel or Papa Don't Preach.

!UPDATE!
Number 1 in the US at the time was this:
QUOTE
"Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)" was a hit for the Louisiana-based John Fred and his Playboys in early 1968. The song, co-written with bandmate Andrew Bernard, was a parody of The Beatles' hit, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". According to The Billboard Book of Number One Hits by Fred Bronson, the song was inspired by Fred's listening to "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and mistakenly believing that the lyrics to the song were "Lucy in disguise with diamonds." Ironically, it went on to knock Hello Goodbye, another Beatles tune, off the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in January 1968. However, it also stuck Fred with a novelty act image he was never able to shake. Nevertheless, the song remains a favorite on oldies-oriented radio stations.
Now this I have heard of.
Strange how both mine are comedy/parody records!

Well I think this even beats Mull of Kintyre. Number One on 17th may 1989 was the charity version of
Ferry 'cross the Mersey for the victims of Hillsborough, and featured The Christians, Holly Johnson, Paul McCartney, Stock Aitken Waterman and Gerry Marsden. Shit song, and the 1989 equivalent of Candle in the Wind. Oh dear.
And I was one number one away from
this absolute gem.

I was brought into the world to the sounds of UK Number 1 "Combine Harvestor (Brand New Key)" by the Wurzels. Beat that, everyone! For the US, it was "Silly Love SOngs" by WINGS. I missed 2 excellent songs before and after. Shame.
Number one albums - "Black and Blue" by Teh Stones (US) and "Greatest Hits" by ABBA (UK).

Message in a Bottle by The Police was at the top spot in the UK when I was born. A few days later and it would have been Video Killed the Radio Star.
