Hard boiled, cynical detectives take on dirty cases and uncover more than they bargained for in films where things aren't what they appear to be. But which is better? There's only one way to find out...

That's an evil choice. I'm going to have to rewatch them both and get back to you.

It popped into my head whilst watching Chinatown last night. There is no denying it's a great film and I understand it's significance in film history but I just don't find it as great as a lot of other people. I get the flawed eye motif and use of water, clocks, mirrors, photographs, etc but as a whole it just doesn't really feel like the sum of it's parts and that I'd probably prefer the less respected Blade Runner. I don't think Blade Runner is as sophisticated as Chinatown but maybe it's the simplicity that makes it feel more organically whole. Don't get me wrong, I think both films are great and whilst it's stupid to say one film is better than the other, I would say that I prefer Blade Runner over Chinatown.

I watched Chinatown earlier and my gut instinct at the moment is to vote for it as the better film. This viewing had much more of an impact on me than my previous viewings and the overall impression it made on my was greater than any that Blade Runner has had. However, I'm not going to vote until I've watched Blade Runner again. So far, though, Chinatown is ahead by a nose.
