As I'm building my DVD collection at a rate of knots I thought I would ask some advice about the current best buys (and share some of my findings).

I have enjoyed the Adam and Joe DVD (especially the commentary for the commentary menu) and purchased the 9 disc Alien Quadrilogy Box Set for £25 in Eastbourne MVC. I don't think I can say fairer than that!

So what have you really enjoyed or felt was real value for money recently?
kenickie
The class new box set of the first three Hellraiser films that's in the shape of the puzzle box. Three classic gore-flicks for about £18. Wicked.
Raven
An obvious one but I'd have to go with the Star Wars DVD box set, very good quality and at under £10.00 per film - depending on where you buy it - well worth it.

Past that, I can personally recommend all four of the Futurama box sets - a brilliant cartoon, that is now sadly no more . . . sad.gif

I got that over the summer and have loved it till...I lost it
The commentry on all the menues is great, and I particually like the Game and watch thing inside the box.
When I first watched it I was dissapointed as everything but 1 thing was in it that I was hoping for untill I listend to the audio cuts, the Tetris song rules

Shaun of the dead and the 3 disc spaced box sets obviously

I havent actually borught this yet cause I think a frinds getting it for my birthday, but its looks very good, A special edition 2 disc boxset of Amelie which will replace my first dvd that I love loads.

Oh and Ive just remembered, a couple of days ago I found a boxset of the first two Gundam Wing dvd's with a figure for £30. Now for just the 2 dvd's thats saved £10 but the free Gundam figure is very very good quality worth at least £12 on its own. Theres a box set of dvd's 3+4 with a different figure im going to have to save up for.
Raven
I've got the two disk Amelie box set, tis very good smile.gif

The MI-5 season 1 slipcase is cool. Oh, that's "Spooks" for you guys in the UK. smile.gif

I also favor the Alien movies box, Babylon 5 seasons, the Nero Wolfe season 1 box, the Shield seasons 1 and 2, the Fellowship of the Ring boxes, and some Japanese anime box sets - Bubblegun Crisis Tokyo 2040, Kino's Journey, and Lain.

The packaging for the classic Star Trek boxes looks pretty cool, though I haven't gotten them.
EasyMark
Oh, and the Spaced collection of course. happy.gif

Theres one brilliant Anime boxset out there, in hong kong I think. Some guy brought this colourful Studio Gibli boxset with 8 dvd's, each with 2 films on...mmmmmmmmmm. Must keep an eye out for that.

Nero Wolfe

I saw that on BBC2 last winter - they were quite good, but you can't get either the books or the DVD's in the UK (or you couldn't last time I checked!).

Sad. sad.gif

I miss that show. A&E said it was too expensive to produce, so they canceled it after two or three seasons. I have the later stuff on tape, but I want dvds, damn it! mad.gif

Yeah, some friends of mine (who moved away) have that. I saw Porco Rosso on that, but didn't get to borrow any others before they moved. Hopefully all the others will eventually show up on DVD over here in the States. Only Totoro, Kiki, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away so far.
EasyMark
Oh, and Laputa/Castle in the Sky. I don't have that one, so I always forget it.

I tend to start screaming at the kids "WHAT ARE YOU DOING? DON'T JUMP AROUND LIKE THAT! YOU'RE MILES UP IN THE AIR ON THE SIDE OF A FRICKIN' FLOATING ROCK!" rolleyes.gif

Makes me nervous.

Any kung fu fan must have Storm Riders. Its only in Mandarin (English subtitles) but pretty easy to find.

Thought of some more....

One that was released a while ago but I'm enjoying again is 'Ghostwatch' - that halloween special that was on the BBC years ago starring Sarah Greene. I never saw it when it was on TV but I remember the fuss it caused in the newspapers the next day. For those of you who don't know it was a drama piece played out as a live show from a supposedly haunted house in London. Throughout the show odd things happen, but it's done in such a subtle way that it is genuinely frightening. Very good indeed and so clearly before it's time (wes cravens new nightmare anyone?)

and obviuosly Little Britain now it's been released - fantastic stuff with quality extras!
ONscotland
It's brand new - Little Britain is a must have DVD. Jam packed with extras on two lovely disks.

I love those boxsets, the extras are brilliant. I recently got the Simpsons season 4 boxset, and the extras are pretty good on that too, although I still haven't listened to the commentries...
littlemisscheeky
I guess this one depends on whether you loved the film as a kid, but the Goonies is just out on DVD and i haven't enjoyed rewatching a film in a long time

Have to also agree with the futurama box set.

Another set of dvds that i can watch over and over are the league of gentlemen ones, the commentaries are really good
Amazongirl
Ill need to get the goonies...its on my "I have but not actually borght" list

Pirates of the carrabian is on that list too

Me again...

I'm really loving the Black Books boxed set too. Having never seen the show on TV I took a chance and bought it after some people mentioned it on the forum. I am so pleased I did biggrin.gif It's wicked!
bagpuss
Anyone got the new Donnie Darko DVD with the extra bits?

Is it worth forking out for?

I like that line of Simon's - something like "he's young, he's cool, he rides a scooter"

ps. Please correct me if you know the line!
The Phantom
if I remember correctly he adds something like 'he listens to the Stereophonics' to the end of that line.
chivaknievel
hes called evan and he says something like "you see me and you think 'evan, he's a cool guy, he's young, he rides a scooter, he listens to stereophonics'"

The outtakes on that Black Books DVD are fantastic! There are so many of them they are great. I love outtakes smile.gif

I DON'T recomment you get The Burbs if you think that 'Uncut' will actually mean extra scenes that we haven['t seen before because it DOESN'T! mad.gif

Pah what is all this bad luck I'm having with DVDs recently? sad.gif

Been wondering about the same thing myself until I saw that.
On blahdvd the individual box sets at 8.99. Not bad, but still...It´ll be a hell of a lot cheaper to buy the whole season. Even with customs charge I´ll get out of it much cheaper..of course I´ll be crossing my fingers and hope that it goes through like my spaced box set did...miracles do happen now and then!

Then again, we also have the Curb your enthusiasm seasons at a alltime low price these days! Need more..money!!!

is it not cantonese? any how, 'storm riders' (and 'the duel') is a piece of shit. it's god-awful, almost the anti-kung-fu. avoid at all costs.

Hence "some guy."

i don't get it...

my point was, it's a bootleg and, at two films per disc, it's only going to be a cheap way to by shit copies of films that deserve better...

Yes is the answer. Very different edit of the film with scene which weren't on the deleted scenes section of the old dvd. New sound edit (though to be honest I prefer the old one) and some decent extras, especially the Kevin Smith commentary.

Got both series of Scrubs and all the Family Guy available. Also got Jam and Brass Eye for under £10 a piece and worth every penny.
Raven
Never seen blahdvd.com before - bit cheap aren't they? Does anyone know how reliable they are?
