In all fairness, 9 and 10 were about as average as you can get. This problem stemmed from RDA being phased out for several seasons before and the final push with Ben Browder's 'Cameron Mitchell' taking command of SG-1 for the final two. The series' are filled with in-jokes, which doesn't exactly command new viewers, and some of which weren't even Stargate in-jokes but related to the Browder/Black Farscape connection. Episodes like '200' were incredibly post-modern, almost to the point of being uncomfortable to watch, but still being relatively funny.
They weren't great, but they were watchable and enjoyable. Raven is of course right about Atlantis, a far superior three seasons in parallel with SG-1: 8-10.

I've just finished watching series 9 and it got better towards the end. The first 4 eps were a bit meh, but it did get going.
The new characters worked quite well; the chemistry between Browder and Shanks starts to work - obviously it's not up there with RDA and Shanks but it adds the comic relief which punctuates the show as a whole.
I've got to get series 10, now. Just so I've got the whole damn show
Looking to get series 2 of Atlantis. Can anyone explain, if there is, the difference on dvd.co.uk between a "complete series" and a "box set"?

My guess would be that SG-1 is released in box sets (the individual DVD releases supplied in the same cases, and presented in a cardboard sleeve) whereas the Atlantis DVDs are released - as a series - in completely new packaging, under a "complete series" tag? (I prefer these because they take up a lot less room!).
If thats not it, I have no idea!

Aye. Series 1 Atlantis "boxset" is much smaller than the SG-1 sets. I've ordered it anyway. It'll be a surprise and everyone loves surprises, don't they?

A nice second addition, and season premiere, to the three part arc in Stargate Atlantis this week. I think they have really got a good thing going with the form of a season finale and premiere to keep the viewers gripped - it's hardly original but ending the season on a cliffhanger, then coming back after several months with some resolution but adding even more problems to be resolved in the second episode of the new season is just brilliant. Atlantis has always had much more of an organic progression than SG-1 and consequently manages to keep you interested, especially in these cases. I doubt that they are going to lose the one episode/one story format altogether but it just all links together so much better than SG-1. I do confess to being rather desperate to see the next one now, and here come the spoilers:
I don't know how important Weir's speedy recovery will be, whether or not the nanites are going to turn against her body or even alert the Pegaus Replicators to the plans of the SG-A team. It would be nice if they didn't immediately go wrong and leave scope for a later episode, just so Rodney could have some vindication rather than Shepherd having the smug I told you so face that he does so well.
As for the proposed 'heist' I couldn't imagine a more exciting twist to this because if it all goes to plan then it puts Atlantis in very much the same situation as they were at the beginning of season 2: namely, a ZPM to power weapons/defences/hyper-drive. And that's not the best part, the infiltration of the Replicator homeworld is going to be gripping viewing.
I think I may have built the next episode too high in my expectations, but I don't care. Roll on Friday.

I have my reservations of having Amanda tapping come in on Atlantis I really do, dont get me wrong I loved SG-1 and she was great in that but I think Atlantis really doesnt need Carter in it as we have Mackay who more than makes up for the geeky, science guy who has progressed to using a P90 quite effictively.
Carter taking over from Weir removes that stability of having civillians working inconjuction with the military aby by removing that faction it just becomes SG-1 but on another planet instead based at Earth. I guess I will just have to see how it will all work out when it starts tomorrow, I didnt think Freema would work on Who after Rose but I was pleasantly surprised, maybe Carter's inclusion is a good thing, guess we'll find out soon enough

Is the "Ark of Truth" a finale to SG-1, or is it the final couple episodes of series 10 put together?
After watching S10, I found the ending to be pretty weak for a show which has been interesting and innovative for such a length of time. I'm hoping this Ark of Truth will give it the ending which it deserves.

Ark of Truth is one of 2 SG1 straight to DVD tele-films. Ark of Truth aims to wrap up the whole Ori storyline whereas Stargate Continuum is a standalone SG1 movie which involves the reappearance of Ba'al and thats due out July of this year.

I watched the Ark Of Truth not the other week actually and thought it was very good. Tied up the whole Ori storyline quite neatly and had some good b-plots as well. Although at places it did feel a bit like two or three episodes mashed together to make a film. Overall I'd give it 7 or 8 out of 10. Good, but not brilliant.

Don S. Davis: 1942-2008
Monday - June 30, 2008 | by Darren Sumner
With great sadness we must report that veteran actor Don S. Davis passed away on June 29, 2008. He was 65 years old.
Don co-starred on Stargate SG-1 for the show's first seven years, helping to launch the enduring science fiction franchise. Davis played Major General George Hammond, base commander and a father figure to many of the show's characters.
He is also well-known for his portrayal of Major Garland Briggs in Twin Peaks.
Off-screen, Don was beloved by the show's cast and crew. He departed the show in 2003 due to a medical condition that restricted his workload, but returned for several guest appearances on SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis in the following years. Don worked hard to improve his health, and continued to work both on screen and off until his death.
The following message was provided by Don's representative and his wife, Ruby Fleming-Davis:
Dear Fans and Friends of Don S. Davis,
So many of you have been touched by not only the work and art of Don S. Davis, but by the man himself, who always took the time to be with you at the appearances he loved, that it is with a tremendous sense of loss I must share with you that Don passed away from a massive heart attack on Sunday morning, June 29th.
On behalf of his family and wife, Ruby, we thank you for your prayers and condolences. A family memorial where Don's ashes will be scattered in the ocean will take place in a few weeks, and should you wish to, please make a donation to the American Heart Association in Don's memory.
Born August 4, 1942 in Aurora, Missouri and raised there, Don received a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in theater and art from Southwest Missouri State College in 1965. He then served three years on active duty in the United States Army, entering as a Second Lieutenant. He rose to the rank of Captain and was stationed in Korea before completing his required tour of active duty.
Upon leaving the army, Don began working toward a Master's degree in theater at Southern Illinois University, in Carbondale, Illinois, and received his Master's degree in 1970. He taught at the University of British Columbia for a decade before returning to SIU to complete his coursework for a PhD in theater, receiving the degree in 1982.
Photo from Southern Alumni
Don's list of film and television credits is lengthy, dating back to 1982. He met Stargate co-star Richard Dean Anderson on the set of MacGyver, where Don worked as a stunt double for actor Dana Elcar.
When production on Stargate SG-1 began in 1997, the producers tapped Davis to play the base commander -- originally written to be a by-the-book antagonist, but quickly softened by Don's own personality and experience.
In 2003 Don married his soul mate and the great love of his life, Ruby Fleming-Davis. The two have resided in British Columbia with their three dogs, Teto, Ming and Charley.
Don's off-screen career as an artist blossomed especially in the years since he left Stargate. A look at his Web site, DonSDavisArt.com, reveals his tremendous gifts in painting, drawing, and woodcarving.
Don's final Stargate appearance is in Stargate: Continuum, the SG-1 DVD movie that will be released July 29 in North America and August 18 in the United Kingdom. He will also appear in the forthcoming films "Vipers," "Woodshop," and "Far Cry," according to the Internet Movie Database.
Many fans of Don's work have had the opportunity to meet him in person, as he was also a regular face at fan conventions around the world. Fans learned that behind General Hammond was a Southern gentleman with a big heart, a no-nonsense attitude, and all the love and respect one could imagine.
GateWorld's editors visited with Don in 2006, where he talked at length about his career, his time on Stargate, and his feelings about his fellow cast members. That two-part video interview, "Intimate Portrait," may be found in the Interviews archive.
Services for Don S. Davis will be small and private in Vancouver. His Web sites will be updated this week, and his obituary has been published in the Vancouver Sun newspaper. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association in Don's memory.

There are reports bubbling through the net, mainly from Gateworld(?), that Atlantis has been cancelled and will end at the end of it's fifth series (although it looks as though it will have a cliff-hanger so I don't know if that means future DVD movies).
If true, I think it is a pity, I've generally preferred Atlantis over SG-1, and although I think they've made some mistakes in recent seasons - mainly introducing souped-up replicators into the Pegasus galaxy, killing off Beckett and side-lining Weir - I've still enjoyed what I've seen up to the middle of season four.

I have heard that Beckett is making a comeback this season
I did love SG-1 but for me it went downhill when RDA left the show. The 2 dvd movies havent really been up to par for me either, Continuum wasnt so bad but it wasnt brilliant either and that show has had some brilliant episodes.
Atlantis has grown over the last couple of seasons and if it is cancelled then the dwindling of great sci-fi shows in on the up again what with BSG bowing out too.

Atlantis, like SG-1 before it, is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me.
Neither series has been an exemplary exponent of TV science fiction, but I think both series have their charms. To me, they both seem to tick along churning out the same entertaining guff week in, week out, it's never that bad, but it's never that brilliant either – just good solid fair.
If this is the end for Atlantis I'll be sorry to see it go, mainly, I think, because I'll miss Rodney McKay, who has to be one of the best characters in anything, ever (and the Wraith are pretty good too!).

Agreed, Rodney McKay has to be one of the best characters to grace the TV screen in a long time whether he be a sci-fi character or not and it will be sad to see him go. The only other hope we have is if he returns in an Atlantis straight to DVD fare much like SG-1 have done.
McKay's friendship with Beckett in the first couple of seasons reminded me of the friendship between Jackson and O'Neill on SG-1 but better somehow.

I never did see him as the Doctor in the first place to be honest.
Character rundown as mentioned at Gateworld:
Colonel Everett Young
40's handsome, capable, former SG team leader. Like the Jack O'Neill of ten years ago, but Young's edges have tended to sharpen over time. He requested permission to serve the remainder of his commission on Earth upon marrying his wife, Hailey, two years ago, but for now he's temporary commander of a secret off world base. The loss of two members of his team several years ago has taught him never to take anything for granted, and be prepared for anything. He stays on top of his team so they stay alive. STAR NAMES ONLY. SERIES REGULAR;
Tamara Jon
20-25, all ethnicities (Asian Preferably). SGC Field medic, Captain grade. Off world experience. Beautiful, tough, smart, capable. Paramedic level training. Able to triage serious injury. Modest background. Dreamed of being a doctor but couldn't afford medical school and the Air Force was her best option. She ends up being the most medically inclined person on the ship but is overwhelmed by the lack of knowledge and experience treating seriously wounded and ill patients. She also lacks the medicine and supplies and has to make do. SERIES REGULAR;
Chloe Carpenter
20ish. Stunning and sexy. Daughter of a U.S. Senator. Silver spoon upbringing and a little spoiled but not stupid either. Politically and socially savvy. Dreams of following in her father's footsteps but for now she's a bit of a party girl in her first year at an Ivy League school. Her father's tragic death and the dire circumstances of being trapped on a spaceship seriously tests her character. SERIES REGULAR;
Eli Hitchcock
20-25. Total slacker. Utter genius. Mathematics, computers, anything he puts his mind to. Acerbic sense of humor. A social outcast. Comes from a broken home. Lacks confidence because his true intelligence has never really been recognized like Matt Damon's character from Good Will Hunting with a little Jack Black thrown in sptv050769. SERIES REGULAR;
Lt. Jared Nash
20-25. Junior S.G.C. team member. Officer material but green and rough around the edges. Every teenage girl's fantasy. Like a college quarterback thrown into his first pro game, he is thrust into the role of leader well before he's ready for the responsibility and must learn to take command, earn respect through action, and manage the diverse personalities on the ship to keep everyone alive. Like Jason Bourne, he is skilled and well-trained however he is mentally unprepared for the urgency of the situation. SERIES REGULAR;
Ron "Psycho" Stasiak
20, all ethnicities. Marine. Big, strong, silent. You want him on your side. You don't want him mad at you. Lacks control over his temper in non combat situations. His past is a mystery but it's clear something dark formed the hard shell around him. Yet, there must also be some moral center because otherwise he'd kill everyone around him. Think Eric Bana's character "Hoot" in Blackhawk Down. SERIES REGULAR.
So, nobody over the age of 25 unless youre the bloke in charge, nothing about a Dr David Rush bio yet

So this started on Sky 1 last night with the first 2 episodes being aired.
First impressions are very good. It's has a more darker feel to things, in the same style as BSG in places and it's filmed different to how SG:1 and Atlantis were. It feels a lot more grown up, no flashy title sequence for a start.
The first two episodes set up the story nicely, although a little bit predictable in places but it had some nice touches along the way with a couple of small cameos for good measure.
It's going to be interesting to see where they take the story seeing as this is the only Sci-fi show (that I know of) that is set in space now after BSG has finished.
For those that missed it I'm sure Sky 1 will repeat it at some point of you can watch the first 4 episodes on line here -

Not really, all you need to know is that the Stargate is magic travelling MacGuffin, the rests pretty well laid out. I actually rather liked it, there's definitely some potential there, for both story and characters. I just hope it doesn't become a "dark and gritty" Star Trek: Voyager is all with every weeks episode being "Ooh, we've found a way home. Oh bugger, no we haven't".

I enjoyed the opening episodes. Definately "darker" than SG-1 - perhaps following BSG?
There are definate parallels between this and the opening eps of Atlantis; the perils of being on Ancient technology - the breeches on the space ship and waining air supply mirror Atlantis being underwater and having to get it to the surface.
Nice little bits of SG humour are still there as well as the heroic military personel and misundertood scientists fighting private deamons.
Hasn't RDA piled on the weight, though? He looked distinctly jowelly!
