I'm making a concerted effort to get through Season three this weekend. Exodus was particularly impressive for telly.

But I don't think BSG will ever grab me in the way other shows have. For a start the characters are just not very likeable, and it struck me recently that there are no 'good' bad guys! All the Cylons are irritating, smug or just plain twattish (please don't say 'that's the point') - whatever happened to the charismatic villain you root for as much as the good guys? Equally, all the good guys are either irritating, smug or just plain holier-than-thou. It's very well made, tightly plotted and intelligent...but it's hard to care.

QUOTE (Raven @ Nov 17 2007, 12:32 PM)
I think the thing I found, come the end of season three, was that it was just so unrelentingly bleak.  I watched the series through in just over a week and the lack of humour did turn it into a bit of a slog come the end.

The show is trying to be a serious drama, but I feel there are times when they take it a little too seriously for its own good.

By the way, the commentaries you can download from the official web site are worth listening to, if you are interested in knowing how and why some of the story choices were made.
*

Yeah, I'm with you guys on those points.

I've thoroughly enjoyed BSG from the start but like Raven says, its relentless bleak tone wears a little thin over time. A tad more humour really wouldn't go amiss; the general lack of humour dehumanises the characters you should be rooting for, and while the dramatic elements serve their purpose well enough in that respect, overall the characters are more than a little difficult to really care about - Adam's right about that.

It's oh so easy to indulge in a spot of futile pining for the likes of Firefly in the wake of that comment, and I think it serves to underline the point. But to start lightening things up at this stage may sit somewhat awkwardly after the preceding seasons' gloomier tone.

All that said, I haven't lost interest in BSG yet.

I saw a preview DVD of that. It's ok, some decent action and stuff, but it doesn't really do anything to further the plot. It's a reasonably enjoyable but ultimately unnecessary addition.

Two words: Michelle Forbes.
Raven
She's not as good now as she was in her Ro Laren days . . .

Or Homicide, where she ruled the place. I like Michelle lots.

She should be Spock's mum in the new ST movie. I always thought she had a Nimoy/Rosselini quality.
Jessopjessopjessop
So I finished Series three, watching the last 10 episodes in two days!

The last few were particularly good despite the show almost grinding to a halt after the excitement of the mid-season arc; the trial was a deliberate slow-burner which was an interesting contrast to the usual flat-out pace of most season climaxes. The end of 'Maelstrom' was devastating, and for the first time I was quite emotional, but thankfully by the end of 'Crossroads II' my worries were allayed. The final shots were very impressive too, and although the use of a contemporary rock classic was unsettling, I have a feeling this will be directly explained when/if they get to Earth.

Some thoughts:

I take it the final five are 'good' Cylons, banished by the others a long time ago. Perhaps their mission is to protect the humans. They seemed to be activated by arrival in the nebula, so who could have programmed that into them and why?

Or is Starbuck something other than a Cylon - something to do with the Gods or the founders of the 12 colonies?

Or maybe there are actually 13 Cylon models for the 13 colonies, in which case there is one (or two if Starbuck is different) more to see.

Edit: Rekha Sharma as Tory is a hot addition to the Cylon list anyways.
Raven
Do we need spoiler tags to discuss something that has already aired on Sky and is now on DVD?

I don't think they've established what the relationship is between the Cylon models we already know, and the remaining five. The "older" models seem to revere them in some way, but past that they haven't really addressed that issue yet.

Personally, I don't believe Starbuck is a Cylon, I think there is something else going on there and that the 12th Cylon will be revealed at a later date.

I like the bit where Tigh walks into the room and sees the other three - apparently, according to Ron Moore's pod cast, the writers now refer to that as "Tigh enters a room - Woarhhhhh!"

Um, I gaveth that back to you at the Brighton gathering, m'dear.... you haven't gone and lost it now, have you? huh.gif

Okay, so, Razor wasn't quite as dynamic as I'd hoped, but it wasn't half-bad, either. The fellow who wrote it was also responsible for one of my favourite DS9 episodes -- "The Visitor" -- so my expectations may have been a bit high...

The lady who played Lee's XO put in a good performance. I see she'll soon be in the American remake of Life on Mars, with Colm Meaney. Maybe I'll check that out.

It's a shame she bit the dust, though.

Ah, so you did. I'm sure it's somewhere at home...in fact I think I can visualise where it is. I'd just forgotten you'd given it back to me cos I'm a bit slow, like.

This is a bit worrying: Will production resume on Galactica?
*

Yes, most annoying. Hope they see it through but the strike has cast some serious doubts:

QUOTE (SFN Forum)
Basically the cast and crew have had a force majeur (SP?) pulled on their contracts that says that under certain circumstances the crew can be put on unpaid hiatus.

Thats what this is all about really, that due to the WGA strike, with no scripts Galactica crew and cast are sitting around absorbing cash doing nothing so the studio pulled the force majeur to save money.

The fear within the production and other TV productions in a similar situation (Galactica isn't alone in this), is that if the WGA strike goes past a certain point in time when contracts for cast and crew need to be renewed, they simply wont be because thanks to the force majeur, the studios are not obliged to pay off staff members on a production if a series is cancelled early or mid way through a contracted season.

In short the force majeur move can give studios a legitimate and cheap way of cancelling shows without the legal cobblers and staff contract buy outs that normally occur when a show is canned.

BSG/DS9 fans!:

Star Trek Deep Space Nine star Nana Visitor (Kira Nerys) will be joining the ragtag fleet of Ron Moore’s Battlestar Galactica. In an interview with Starburst, Moore revealed that Visitor will have a recurring role as a cancer patient named Emily who meets Laura Roslin (played by Mary McDonnell) while she gets her cancer treatment. Moore states “Nana is going to be terrific for this role, and it’s great to see her again.” Visitor will actually be the second Trek Bajoran to join the Colonial Fleet, following Michelle Forbes (TNG: Ro Laren) who was most recently featured in in the BSG TV movie (and DVD) “Razor.”
Raven
Good to hear, but if it's not already been filmed, it may never happen . . .
thirtyhelens
Ohhh, gloom and doom. The strike WILL end, folks, trust me. We may have to put up with a shitty lack of all things good for a while, but come January the studios and networks will really start to suffer. (NBC already had to hand out millions in advertising refunds because viewership was down this past month.)
Omniscia
That would be nice. Hers was perennially one of the better performances on DS9, or any Trek, for that matter. Sympathetic yet tough as nails. I think she'll fit in just fine on BSG.

I fully expect it to, but it is by no means certain that all the shows currently on hiatus will resume production thereafter, and - according to Ron Moore - Galactica is one of those that may not.

It's okay. Not as great as I had hoped, but a solid episode nonetheless.

Tricia Helfer and Michelle Forbes as lovers? I'm so there!

Sky Plus'd it and watched last night. I thought it was bloody great...

I thought it was a really interesting way to go when they brought in the link to the original series and the centurions. "By your command"!

Agreed, one of the best parts of the film (is it a film or an overlong episode?) Id like to see more on that topic in the next season (last season?)
Svein
I'd call it a TV Movie...
Raven
I watched Razor last night, and thought it was pretty good.

Good, solid performances all round, with some interesting back story - although in a lot of cases we were just seeing events that had already been related in the earlier Pegasus episodes - and some interesting set up for season four.

I thought the mixing in of old school Cylons worked quite well, although it was a bit of a stretch that it just happened to be Adama that found the early version body farm.

That was pretty much the only bit I didn't like. Sure, it helped to give another reason for why Cain had gone off the rails as she had, but it also felt like they were using a tired old sci-fi cliché and that they were suggesting that a powerful, tough woman would have to be gay. It just didn't sit quite right with me.

I don't disagree. I just like both of 'em, and thought they played well against each other.

Series four is airing in March according to the Sci-Fi channel web site now and they've also got a season four trailer up here.

So there is definitely one cyclon model remaining to be seen, which means Starbuck isn't one... unless this was explained in Razor, in which case, no-one contradict me please, I haven't seen that!

Any idea when Sky One will be showing S4?
Omniscia
March? That's great news!

I was beginning to wonder whether we'd ever get to see it again...
Raven
March is good news, but if they don't resolve the writers strike any time soon I'm guessing they will definitely be splitting the final series.
Raven
How to spot a Cylon.
Raven
Battlestar Galactica "Caprica" prequel confirmed.

I didn't think season 4 would be the end of the franchise, somehow!
thirtyhelens
S4 is just three days away. (Well, for us anyway... neener neener. wink.gif )

I'm still processing all of S3, which I binged on over the last couple of weeks. Is it wrong to find Fat Apollo sexy?
Omniscia
I can't believe it's almost here!

At the end of S3, it seemed like it would take forever for the series to return, and now, here we are!

It had better be good.
thirtyhelens
I think as long as we dial back expectations to below "greatest final season EVAH!", we'll probably be pleased. Sure, anything can happen. But it's good to know they have probably been thinking about how to wrap it up for a good long spell now. There shouldn't be anything rushed about the resolutions.

Plus... They showed us Earth, man. Cat's out of the bag wink.gif

Not quite Drifter.

The Sky TV ads show it as starting a week later.

I checked on the Sky guide and the one showing next week appears to be another showing of Razor. On the guide it has 'series four eps 1&2' after the summary.

Bastards, they emailed me last week after I sent an email asking them when it was due back on.

Due to the writers strike, I wonder if we will get the whole season or whether it will be split up which someone had mentioned to me ealier could possibly happen.
