Does anyone remember this show?

It was on BBC2 back in I think 1998 or '99...

The main couple were played by Dylan Moran and (the late) Charlotte Coleman.. but it also starred Mark Heap and Pete Serafinowicz. Pete, I remember, was particularly brilliant and hilarious as Dean. The big, rugby-playing, fire-fighting psycho younger brother (of Charlotte Coleman's character). He was always trying to kill or hurt or embarrass Dylan Moran's character, Ian. It was great.. tongue.gif

I'd love to see it again.. but I don't think it's on DVD. Criminally underrated, if you ask me.

Did anyone else watch it?
Stella MM
I remember watching it and finding it veh funny. But I'd never twigged that Pete was the mad brother before! Should we start a campaign to get the BBC to show it again?
kiss my empty bag
it sounds familar i think i may have seen it lets write to the bbc to remind me !
superfurryandy
The best thing Simon Nye has written, and from the looks of it the best thing he will ever write.
Katy
I've been doing a bit of digging around online and it seems that not only is it not available on DVD, but it doesn't sound like it has been repeated since it was first shown! What a WASTE! Travesty of taste! Mockery of justice! ohmy.gif

I think we need to badger the BBC some.. who do I direct my indignance toward? mad.gif

I'd love to have this show on DVD.. just a plain no-frills, no-extras DVD set would be fine by me (I suppose any "extras" (commentaries, etc) might be a bit weird anyway, since Charlotte Coleman is no longer with us..) sad.gif

A campaign sounds good. (How do those work exactly? It doesn't require organization, does it? Cuz I'm crap at that.. wacko.gif )
rebelstar
You can email the BBC if you like, although all they'll tell you is that there are no plans to repeat it in the near future and it's not likely to be released on DVD.
Little Birdy
I love, love, love this show! I managed to tape every episode when it was shown on UKTV over here earlier this year and its already wearing out. laugh.gif

I adore chubby Dylan - he's just so damned cute! wub.gif

Such a sweet show. I'm sure it'll come out on dvd eventually. Everything does.

Not where the BBC are concerned. Lee and Herring fans have been waiting nearly ten years for the Fist of Fun series to be released... and we're still waiting.
Lee
I loved this show, I think I watched it because I'd seen Dylan Moran's stand up routine (a glass of red in one hand, a ciggy in the other, and the best bed hair ever seen on TV).

The brother in law character was great, and I love the episode where Dylan accidentally shoots his farther-in-law (who already hated him). What's her name (Alice from the vicar of dibley) was also a very funny (pretty much the same character as Alice thinking about it).

While you're at it could you badger them to release/repeat "Is It Bill Bailey?" as well, which was utter genius and also co-starred Simon Pegg.

Was that a positive or negative reply? lol

Maybe if a large enough group of people could convince the BBC that with strategic marketing they could haul in some high sales figures for a 'How Do You Want Me' DVD from the 'Shaun of the Dead'/'Spaced'/'Black Books' fan contingent...

If they marketed it right... and covered the box with enough stickers saying things like "FEATURING EARLY APPEARANCES BY STARS OF CULT SUCCESSES 'SHAUN OF THE DEAD', 'SPACED' AND 'BLACK BOOKS'!!"

Crafty manipulative advertising and marketing.. that's what it's all about. tongue.gif

I mean, Channel 4 was savvy enough to rush the 'Black Books' series 3 DVD release to capitalize on the 'Shaun of the Dead' connection. (Would it be petty to point that out to the BBC? That they are slow and unimaginative compared to their ad-break-having rivals? Pointing out their inherent flaws might not be the best way to win them over, I suppose..)

And FUCK YEAH we need a campaign for an "Is It Bill Bailey?" DVD too!

*makes a placard*
waitingforsimon
I dont know if this would help but Im a fan of Joan of Arcadia and they were not going to release it on dvd so I said why dont we all send a postcard of the place we all live and the reason we want a dvd and we sent them from all over the world. Then they saw how popular the show was worldwide and used them to pitch the release its coming out early next year! It worked for us for that show why not these? I dont know where we would send them, but sometimes they dont do it cos they think they wont sell if we show them we would buy them then they will release them? Bxxx
Stella MM
That's a great idea, waitingforsimon.

Now, if we could only find some world-widr How Do You Want Me fans...
waitingforsimon
Im here to help, I only suggested it cos it worked if you show them people will buy it they will release anything I mean they just want to make money dont they? Bxxxx

The BBC? Make money? *scoff* No, no, no.. they have the licence fee. They don't need no stinkin' DVD residuals. Everything they do is for the sake of ART and art alone! rolleyes.gif

I wouldn't bet tiddlywinks on the financial sensibilities of the BBC...

Postcards generally convince me of ANYTHING, though.. so maybe we should rally round and give that a go..?
waitingforsimon
Well it costs hardly nothing and hey its better than doing nothing hey? At least we can say we tried and we might just succeed! Now how do we find out an address cos we all have to send it the same place........Bxxx
Katy
You know I don't think the BBC want people writing to them, cuz I've been trawling www.bbc.co.uk for about 20 minutes now and I can't find a relevant contact address ANYWHERE...

The "Contact Us" link is a load of poo... mad.gif

Can anyone find an address?
waitingforsimon
Hmmmm...I will look into it tomorrow cos I cant work and report back as soon as I know anything! I have chosen to accept the mission.....this post will self distruct in 30second...Bxxx

I just asked my friend who lives in London who said the only addy she knows is BBC Television Centre, Wood Lane, London W12 so we could try there? Bxxx

I think we'd need a name to address anything we'd send to... like the director of programming, or something. I'm not sure who that is.. anyone know? Who's IN CHARGE at the BBC now, anyway? We could bombard the boss.. if we only knew his name.

Gah. I'd like to write to Simon Nye as well (the creator/writer of the show), see if there's anything he can do or advice he can offer..
waitingforsimon
Right so we need a name to send the postcards to the BBC, and an address for Simon Nye if we want to show him also, we did send postcards to someone who was just working for Joan of Arcadia as opposed to CBS and I believe they took them to CBS to show it would be bought? Hmmm this is not easy but hopefully it will be worth it Bxxx
fried_gold
Spaced Out forumers.. UNITE! I'd certainly be interested in buying it if it came out on DVD. Never heard of it before now.
Katy
Listening to the cast commentary on the 'SotD' DVD just now I noticed Simon actually briefly mentions 'How Do You Want Me?' when he's talking to Dylan Moran about Peter Serafinowicz.

It's over the Pete/Shaun scene in the kitchen, just as it cuts to Shaun talking to Ed over his sholder as he plays on the Playstation (before his phone rings).

It's a bit rushed/unclear but he says (to Dylan)
Simon: "You've worked with Pete before haven't you, Dylan?"
Dylan: "I've worked with Pete.."
Simon: "On 'How Do You Want Me' and 'Black Books' as well.."
Dylan: "And 'Black Books'.. yeah and he's not (??) a fat girl."
Nick (or possibly Simon, doing a Pete-in-'Black Books' impression): "Fraaaaaan?"
(laughter)
Dylan: "Yes, he's got a great set of.. vocals."

So, there ya go. Direct Shaun linkage. It's mentioned on the DVD commentary. Now you HAVE to hunt it down and watch it. smile.gif
waitingforsimon
Wow thats like a cry for help from our fave actors isnt it? We must make this happen for our guys (and our viewing needs) Bxxx
Ade
I'll join the campaign! biggrin.gif I admit, I never saw How Do You Want Me?
but I remember it being advertised, and it already sounds fab from
the previous mentions above!

How about we compile a list of other BBC progs we'd all love to see again,
either repeated or better yet, released to DVD. I too, think it was an utter
travesty that Is It Bill Bailey? was never repeated - the sketches with
Simon Pegg were "hilaaaarious!" smile.gif

It is bad enough that it was shown at some ridiculously late hour
on a Friday night, but what a late night's programming it was, together
with Comedy Nation and This Morning With Richard Not Judy (bizarrely a
longer version of which was always shown on the Sunday after, at midday)
- ahh, thems were the days, what with the slowly decaying Curious Orange,
Jo Unwin (apparently Chris Morris' other half) and 'The Actor Kevin Eldon'
("Angry Monkey Faced Man" as he was descibed in one episode, in an
Incredible Hulk spoof closing credit sequence)

Anyway, yes, let's unite and hassle the BBC some....
Katy
*turns on megaphone, steps onto crate, waves arms to attract attention*

"Campaign Update!" biggrin.gif

Just got an email from Simon Nye (creator/writer of 'How Do You Want Me?'), he is onboard with the campaign and encourages the mass-badgering of the BBC! So! Email them, write to them, send them postcards! LET THEM KNOW that you want to see 'How Do You Want Me?' repeated and/or released on DVD! They might just listen... happy.gif

Contact the BBC via their website email form: http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/contactus/form.shtml

Write to the BBC Audience Services Team (BBC Information): BBC Information, PO Box 1922, Glasgow G2 3WT

(Getting that rudimentary contact info was like getting blood out of an effing stone.. but I think it's all correct. If anybody can find any other helpful contact addresses, please come forward and post them in here.)

Simon IS INTERESTED in a DVD release (he would "love to see" one.) He plans to badger the BBC about it himself, in fact. So, I think the least we can do is join him in the badgering.

So!

THE PLAN: Pester, hassle, annoy the BBC until they cave like the poorly-buttressed, rickety old mine shaft they are! smile.gif

If anyone wants to contact Simon Nye, btw, (to tell him how much you loved the show, express interest in the prospective DVD release, etc) send me a PM and I'll give you his email address (not gonna post it on here, seems a bit rude.)

But, for now, HURRAH! Marginal progress! biggrin.gif
waitingforsimon
Excellent first thing tomorrow I will get on with a letter and email! We have to get this brilliant series released cos its fab! Bxxx
waitingforsimon
I have just sent them an email, but I will also write to them this afternoon because I dont always believe they read the emails. I really hope this works there are some amazing series out there in their dusty vaults they should release! Bxxx
waitingforsimon
Well I just got an automated email back which looks like they are passed around so hopefully if we all do this we may see some good results!

http://www.PetitionOnline.com/hdywm01/petition.html

Simon Nye is encouraging us to "gang-badger" the BBC into action (I emailed him and he replied!)

He's "making calls" about getting the show released himself, so I think we should help him out, don't you?

Contact the BBC via their website email form: http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/contactus/form.shtml

Write to the BBC Audience Services Team (BBC Information): BBC Information, PO Box 1922, Glasgow G2 3WT
