Full Version: Star Trek: original series or Next Generation?

The response may be as simple as 'Who cares?' Who sets your phasers: Kirk or Picard; Uhura or Troy? Which had the best stories? Is it a case of the sequel becoming the masterpiece or a pale imitation?

Original series wins everything. In the last year I've come to realise that it's the only deserving one as it's from an era of campy 60's nostalgic TV. The later series seem boring too.....maybe this is because Enterprise was when I fully realised the horrible truths that the show wasn't actually that good after 1986. I say 86 because films II-IV are good. And VI as well, of course.

Star Trek - superb
Star Trek TNG - worthy, beige and frankly unwatchable (about 4 episodes excepted)

Curious the way TNG looks more dated than Star Trek
sample#136
Of those two, the original series wins hands down. TNG had it's moments, but a million and one repeats on SKY ONE has rendered it null and void.

But if we're talking the whole Star Trek franchise, then Deep Space Nine is the winner. Even beating Kirk and co.

Must admit I'm with you on DS9. Quark's ears piss on Spock's, don't they?

Definately. biggrin.gif

People often go on about the Spock/McCoy relationship, but I think the Quark/Odo relationship is far better.
Also the friendship that developed between O'brien and Bashir was great. Especially when you consider Miles couldn't stand the Doctor to begin with. smile.gif

'Tis true. One thing though...I always felt that Worf looked out of place in DS9, maybe that was because I couldn't dissociate him from TNG. My loss, I guess.
Quark and Odo had that sort of classic comedy duo feel to them...like R2D2 and 3PO dontcha think?

I was initially very resistant to the idea of Worf joining the show as it just seemed like execs were getting cold feet and were trying to turn it into TNG.
But thankfully they actually utilised him well, really playing on his Klingon side rather than how he was trying to fit in with Humans (a particular joy of the show - they allow aliens to be alien).
When the war kicked off we saw him really get in touch with his roots and I actually grew to like him. Martok is the greatest Klingon though. biggrin.gif

As sure as there are four lights and Darmoc and Jalad were at Tinagra when the walls fell, Next Gen Rocks!

Sure the original will always be known as the first, but I think Next Gen is superior (but only because the first set the boundries). The acting (quality?) in the original series is 'laboured' And although TNG has Wesley, Riker and Troi it still pulls off a closenit community.

I don't have a fav, the original series was mind blowing and the Next Gen set the bar for my generation, I only hope 'When Dawson met Joey at Starfleet Academy' finally comes out I'm dead!

(Don't you love seeing the same actors play different parts through -except Majel Barrett/Roddenberry -dept on her mood)

((I'd love to have seen Trelane show up again, maybe him versus Q!))
Svein
Must... not.... take part... in.... geeky.... poll......

I'm a philistine I know, but I have to go with TNG... but not the first Season, which was quite frankly PANTS!

But Original series also had Spock's Brain... unforgivable...
widowspider
has to be TNG for me too, i grew up watching it and absolutely love it. let's be honest, picard was a far superior captain than kirk, not least because one of the best theatre actors in britain was playing him. i LOVE patrick stewart, i think he is incredible and picard was a superb character. he even managed to pull a few good scenes off with riker, which is an impressive feat.
i loved the community on TNG, it had a few dodgy episodes but then what long-running series doesn't?
Serafina_Pekkala
i really don't 'get' the original series not Shatner ... Picard is a dude though.

My like Ds9 the best.

I really couldn't stand Deep Sleep 9 for the longest time... Only Dax made it watchable...

Although, the best Trek episodes ever have both come from DS9... the Tribble sequel and the episode where Quark ends up in Roswell!!!!
Serafina_Pekkala
DS9 i never found slow or sleep inducing post season 3 stuff esp. It had lots of good battles and that tooo. I like the fact that it was never "we are the federation and we are the moral high ground" smugness that TNG could sometimes have. Each to their own and that.

One of my fav eps of all time is actually from Voyager - Meld with Brad Dourif as psycho-killer Souda.

widowspider
ooh yeah that was a brilliant ep - i always really liked voyager, and although i might get lambasted for saying it, i enjoy watching enterprise too. not with the same geeky fervour that i loved TNG, but enjoyable all the same.
m0r1arty
"There are four lights!"

Some good un's in each I think, each had their nix, I do like the DS9 ep with the tribbles, and I like 7 of 9 - but no Brent Spiner doing three parts there

That was a fantastic episode...

Voyager was a lot better, I think, than people gave it credit for!

so it was - Cardassians and David Warner both rock - but together, even more so.

Trek had some ace villains/guests and some excellent character actors playing them too.

Voyager has some great moments too - the ep with the murderous hologram was also a corker.

One of my fav female characters in Trek is Seven. If you can see past the catsuit (difficult for males and females alike), Jeri Ryan is a fine actress in what could be a rubbish role if played by a lesser talent.

Sefi x
m0r1arty
I reckon Jeri Ryan and Jolene Blalock should share an episode where they each get covered in a baby oil like substance and have to wash it off each other in the decontamination shower on Archers Enterprise.

(D'oh, that was s'ppose to be in the In Your Mind Right Now thread!)

loved DS9 but for sheer laughter value it's got to be the original. i liked the voyager episodes with species 97 something
Kick in the Head
I've been watching the some of the first series of TNG recently, and it is just so much cheesy fun. My favourite episode ever has to be Conspiracy - the guy from the Hills have eyes, the maggot-eating, proper fistfights, great dialogue and perhaps the nastiest goriest moment in Trek history. Supoib! biggrin.gif

yeah Species 8472 were scary and horrid and nasty ... *urgh* I never liked Kes in Voyager - she was too twee i found although the episode where she goes back and forward time was cool ...

Sefi x
Svein
I think the best moment in Trek EVER (as far as TV is concerned) is when Riker says "Open Fire" right before the end of "Best of Both Worlds - 1!

How the hell were we supposed to wait 9 months for the next Episode!

Evil versions were always immense fun esp from the parallel worlds - like evil Kira, the Intendant or evil bisexual pirate bad-girl, Ezri. The best villainesses in Trek were the Borg Queen (man she rocks!!!) and the Duras sisters.

Female Q was rubbish though.

I liked TNG best. TOS has a place in my heart, but I think that the love of a fellow geek like Wil Wheaton has ensured that TNG will always come out on top.

Fav ep... I dunno but the first one that sprang to mind that I really liked was "Frame of Mind" where Riker is convinced he is going insane. LOVE that eppy!
widowspider
man, i love wil wheaton. i know he got a bad rap as wesley crusher, but i still liked him. plus he was really good in stand by me.

wesley crusher was okay i suppose - although there were times that he had this asexual teen-Kate-Moss look at times. He was good i Stand by Me though ...

When will Sky show DS9 again?? Barstardos !!!!

He did have that one good episode with that game that was brainwashing everyone!
Draven Grey
Omniscia
No, you've got it all wrong, Draven. Wesley is a square, not a dodecahedron.

TNG all the way, for me. Maybe if I had grown up with TOS, instead, it would be different, but this was the show I remember from my younger days. Which isn't to say I'm old now, just not as young.

Yes, the earlier seasons were crap, but once it got going, it was able to deal with far weighter and more mature topics than TOS could ever have dreamed of touching. Of course, TOS only ran for 3 seasons, while TNG had 7 to work things out in, so it may not be a fair comparison.

That said, I'll let the episodes speak for themselves. "The Inner Light," "The Best of Both Worlds," "The Measure of a Man," "Chain of Command"...
Svein
OMG... I had forgotten Gene's awful ideas of teen fashion!!!!
Obuggrit
I like the current series because it's original, well thought out, brilliantly acted and has great dialogue. cool.gif

Don't you have faith of the heart, Omni?
Omniscia
Hell no. Nor do I don't want to miss a thing. The music of my heart is much less insipid. At the same time, though, how do I live without encountering that music? It's nigh impossible!

I've been watching that recently as well and the thing that leaps out at you (as it's been several years since I last watched a lot of the early episodes) is just how useless Troi is!

In Encounter at Farpoint, right after Q's just done his cocky-holier-than-thou bit, Picard turns to her and asks for her thoughts and she says something like "Well, he's arrogant . . . "

Like No Shit Sherlock!

I don't really have a preference out of TNG and TOS, I like the former because it had some cracking stories (and Patrick Stewart was a damn fine actor) and I like the original because it had some cracking stories (and a great relationship between the main cast).

I'd have to say DS9 was may favorite show overall, and that Voyager sucked badly.

Enterprise I'm still undecided about - for the most part it's not been that good but this season (3 that they are showing on C4 at present) is a definite improvement on the last and from what I hear S4 could be very good indeed (picking up just before it's cancellation, typical!).

Will have to wait and see I guess.
Omniscia
Yes, Troi is quite useless early on, and her wardrobe! Remember that horrendous miniskirt? And the hair!

She never did it for me at all, although I must say she did look a lot better in uniform than she did in that ridiculous pink Barbie dress.

Erzi Dax on the other hand . . . Now you're talking!
Omniscia
Ezri's okay, but I'd choose Dr. Crusher or Major Kira any day.
Raven
Yeah, I definitely preferred Beverly over Troi . . . Oo-er . . . wink.gif
Omniscia

Of course, who can forget Tasha and the "fully-functional" Data?
Obuggrit
The only thing I like about the new series is that Jolene Blalock gets her kit off every 5 minutes.

Gets a bit dull after a while though doesn't it?

Ooo, look! T'Pol's taken her top off again . . .

*yawn*
Obuggrit
I'm not quite bored of her yet. It is probably the only reason why I watch it, that, and the cringe factor of the bad dialogue and acting - especially the other week when they were turned into some caveman era type aliens, or summink.

I hope they can't get enough money to fund a new series. Trek should be dead and burried now and make way for new scifi fantasy gubbins. If they do get the funding, though, they should employ some real writers :/
Obuggrit
Speaking of which. Do you reckon the Spaced posse's next project will be a sci fi comedy?
