Can't wait.

Well - not really. I mean, that is the event that kicks off the whole thing! It's actually funny if you think about what people who haven't read the book will make of it, thinking it's some kind of heavy sci-fi actioner with the world being destroyed! The concept art looks very 2001 - such a radical departure from the BBC series!

sounded suspiciously like the music from Men In Black. But then they often use Elfman's music in trailers.

I think MIB had an elfman score.
... or am I thinking of mars attacks?... huh.gif
AusChick
Whitey thanks so much for posting those here!

OH! I'm excited but I'm scared. I'm really looking forward to the film but I'm really really hoping they will do justice to it.

I like the interior shots of the Heart of Gold. But doesn't Douglas Adams describe the outside as being shaped like a tennis shoe? Looks more like a tennis *ball* in those shots!

I think they made Marvin a little bit too cute. I like Deep Thought though.

Can't wait to see it! Scared and excited and nervous and full of antici-pation.

Cheers

Not too keen on the ship design, but I l ike everything else.

I wasn't really looking forward to this, but I must say it's looking good so far. smile.gif

It looks cool. I have reservations, mind. So many trailers look cool these days and dissolve into insect faecal matter oh so quickly when they (s)hit the screen. I'm a big fan of Hitch-hiker's......I'm very, very nervous.

this looks like it might actually be quite good. i can't wait. who's the cast by the way? marvin is very cute yes, i hope they get the pesimist in there! i agree. very 2001.
Stella MM
According to IMDB, the main cast is as follows:

Martin Freeman .... Arthur Dent
Mos Def .... Ford Prefect
Sam Rockwell .... Zaphod Beeblebrox
Zooey Deschanel .... Tricia McMillan ("Trillian")
Bill Nighy .... Slartibartfast

Seems pretty good - I can't say I pictured Ford Prefect as a large black rapper, but that's clearly just my cultural conditioning. wink.gif

I was watching The Mighty Boosh today and it struck me that Noel Fielding would make a rocking Zaphod.

Forgive us being a little pessimistic but the track record for remakes of classic shows/movies/records has been pretty consistant in that they're generally shit. I note that the screenplay is written by three writers, Douglas Adams standing at a lowly third place.

Now I'm feeling a wee bit queezy.

Great to see quality actors involved in an up to date version of a well loved sci-fi classic. I only hope their quality impacts upon the finished film.
Don't think of Ewan and Liam...don't think of Ewan and Liam....don't think of Ewan and Liam (ad infinitum).

I suggest you guys check out the Hammer and Tongs website, since they're the ones producing it. http://www.tongsville.com/
Especially nice are their two regular shorts. The Pool Cleaner and Eiffel's Blessing. They might help give you a feel of these two guys. I found it strengthened my trust.

I've been reading page up and page down of interviews and the likes, and the writer, who admittedly hadn't read or heard or seen the original book, radio show or TV programme respectively, went into it with all his might when he got the job and has been doing rigorous research in the vaults of the Adams family. He's now read the book a million times over (or somewhere close to that) and likewise with the screenplay Douglas himself wrote before he passed on. He's also been using the unreleased little notes and things Douglas has been sketchin up over the years to make sure he stayed true to his final vision.

I, personally, think Marvin looks great. Sure, he looks like he'll be a neat looking toy as well, but I also think he looks supremely depressed. I hope you weren't expecting to see the Marvin you knew from the TV show? Also, he'll be played by Warwick Davis, whom most of you know as Willow Ufgood or most of the little people in Harry Potter. He's a very good actor, though I'm interested to see what'll be done with his voice.

A black Ford Prefect? Why not? It was never stated otherwise.

Finally... Sam Rockwell. I mean... Does it get any better? Anyone who's seen him in either Confessions of a Dangerous Mind or Charlie's Angels should vigorously nod their heads in agreement when I say that he'll be the perfect Zaphod.

Re Marvin - I've heard that Stephen Moore will be doing the voice (the guy who did the voice in the original radio play and the BBC TV version)
I was really pleased about that but now I can't find his name anywhere and I fear that I heard wrongly. sad.gif

Re Sam Rockwell - somehow I see him more as Ford than as Zaphod. I think he'll do OK though.

Re Disney making the film - Douglas Adams himself was organising this for years with Disney so hopefully his requests will stick. And let's also hope that Disney are trying to get rid of their saccharine image and so something really decent.

The radio play, the books, the records, the books-on-tape and the BBC TV series were all different anyway - so I don't think it matters if the film is a bit different.
So long as they stay true to the feeling of it. That sounds wanky but hopefully you know what I mean.

By the way - did anyone hear the new radio play that they've made with the original actors? "Tertiary Phase". It even has Douglas Adams doing the voice of Agrajag which was obviously recorded a while back.
I think this came out on BBC radio in the last month or so.
Don't know if it's coming out in Australia. I hope so

yes, i know Martin Freeman has already been cast but i really really think Mark from Peep Show (David Mitchell) IS Arthur Dent..
plus, he has no discernable Irises

I just hope that the movie does justice to all the formats douglas adams created of hitchhikers.

The books and tv series were excellent, i especially like the use of psuedo CG in the series.

they're doing a remake of hitch-hikers??

According to imdb Marvin is voiced by Alan Rickman...if not Stephen Moore I can't think of a better choice than Rickman.

I think the casting is spot on...especially Nighy, Rockwell and Freeman. And despite my initial reservation about Mos Def, I think he can pull it off - the few films I've seen him in he's been quite good.

Oh and Bill Bailey as the Sperm Whale...inspired
franktherabbit
they really don't tell you anything, do they?
Walsh
Hopefully the movie will be awesome, obviously its not going to be as good as the book or radio series but should be better than the TV series. I wonder how there going to do the graphics for the guide? The simple 80's style or something complex and expensive which looks awful?

Well unless they either really miss the point or just completely ignore the book then it shouldn't be too bad, can't wait smile.gif

I really hope they use real graphics to imitate the cool animations of the 80's series. ... Very retro. smile.gif

Anything other that the original graphics would seem wrong. However i bet they have some fancy 3d things swirling around the place instead.

The poster doesn't give much away, does it? Like the trailer. I want more, dammit.

I would never have considered Bill Nighy as Slartibartfast, but now I think about it, he'll probably do a really good job.

who is Malkovich playing? IMDB has him down as Humma Kavula, a character I have no memory of.

Malkovich's character is a new one created by Adams.
