Indeed - what the highwayman says. For me -
Objects in Space is fabulous because of the darkness and cleverness yet
Out of Gas has the pure emotion, which packs a punch every time. And
Our Mrs Reynolds is the fuckest-uppest because it is so darn funny. All parts of Joss's brain we love and adore.
Heart of Gold is still torture for me every time - i get jealous. I am a spaz.
The only episodes i think are a tad 'meh' (a tiny tad) are
Safe and
Shindig - the latter to me is the archetypal Jane Espenson writing (she does it on Buffy too). Eg. great pace, style and some fab one-liners but ultimately a silly premise made sillier by over-written characters and daft plots.
But Safe has the out-take when the fly lands on Sean's nose. If he got any more adorable at that point, he'd be a fluffy kitten in an upturned Easter bonnet.

I always imagine your posts read out in the style of Queenie.
I think
Out Of Gas is an incredibly powerful episode, which really demonstrates the relationships between the characters and the complicated emotional tangles they are in. However,
Our Mrs Reynolds and
War Stories are more archetypal Firefly eps, I think, because of the comedy and drama that are interwoven.
Frankly, I ruddy bloody love every episode.

Exactly.
Agreed about "Out of Gas" though; it is a flawless piece of writing, hence I do believe it's the best of the series. I've got a few favorites tho; "Our Mrs. Reynolds" and "Objects in Space" are my runners-up, and then there's "Ariel" which is such a splendid caper.

The reason I liked Out of Gas was how it showed how each character found their way onto the Firefly barring Book, River and Simon which were covered in the pilot episode.
Shy innocent looking Kaylee banging her way in the Engine room, whodve thought? Wash and his 'soupcatcher' (cue funny outtake) and Jaynes turncoat and jumping crew to join up cause he got his own bunk all intermixed with this great flowing piece about how Mal battles to save his home, Serenity which makes it one of the best episodes ever.

What might be wrong with Jaynestown? Don't make me through you through a holographic bar window....
I think the definitive episode under the criteria given is probably Our Mrs Reynolds bt virtue of mixing the crew definitely looking like they were going to die with excellent humour, "a very special hell" and "I fell down" and all that type of stuff. Also good is Out Of Gas, War Stories and for reasons I can't really explain, Shindig.

I'm guessing you meant crew there. Is that a common sci-fi storyline? Well I didn't think it seemed any less convincing as a fresh story in the escapades of the serenity crew than any other.

Adam singing "the hero of Canton" is on the Firefly DVDs isn't it? I recall it beacuse the orange of hat and set clashes with Baldywins sunburned nose, bless him.

It's an easter egg here.
http://www.eeggs.com/items/42488.htmlWhen i mean more commentaries i am speaking of Serenity. I have the Australian collectors tin of film with the extra disc but still only one commentary of film by Joss. There should be a sort of super-dooper 5 year anniversary one with Alan and Nathan commentary added along with other features of goodliness.
Joss should take a leaf out of Wright/Pegg's book of 'being nice to fans with many commentaries'. Like the Ambassador, they really spoil us.

Rewatching Serenity for the first time in ages, I'm really apreciating how much more desperate Malcom's become from the end of the series to the start of the film. Although he's still wisecracking he's become a lot harder, harder even than he was at the start of the series. He lost everything he believed in, then rebuilt his new family and now, it's implyed, The Alliance is slowly crushing the life out of him and his again...The seriousness of the situation is sort of mirrored in how the Reaver problem is getting worse and worse...I like this film.

I'm just having a debate over this: I was saying that it might be worth getting these props because they would appreciate in value but someone close to me disagrees that anything from Serenity would have a hard time compared to say, with ET.
I know this is all relative, but I reckon buying the Operative's sword would be a strong financial move.

Jan 20 2007, 09:49 PM
I suppose it would all depend on how successful Joss may be as a director in the future. If he goes onto huge success, then anything from earlier films or works, even those that may not have been terribly successful, like Serenity, might go up in value. Though I don't think it would be a huge increase, unless Serenity goes onto become a Princess Bride style cult sensation.

Yeah it is a bit of a gamble for such few funds I have.

Drifter
Jan 20 2007, 09:52 PM
Well the Operative's sword was the weapon of the film that and the axe River used and I have to disagree with your friend, I think Serenity's props would increase in value. Look at Space Above and Beyond another series cancelled after one season, I know for a fact their props are few and far between and always bring in a tidy sum when they are for sale.

I just got through reading about how the air ambulance from the episode 'Ariel' was discovered in an aviation scrapyard last April, by a guy on his way to Vegas. He was an aviation buff, although he hadn't even seen the show at that point, but it still caught his eye. It wasn't until he saw a couple of episodes in July (including 'Ariel') that he realised what it was.
The prop has now been purchased and is being restored and turned into some kind of travelling Firefly/Serenity display, visiting the various conventions.

One I had heard about but never saw till I came across it there (and You Tube) was the time they were all stood in the cargo bay aound a coffin (The Message) listening to an old buddy of Zoe and Mal on a tape telling them about where he wants his body sent.
