Serenity beats Star Wars to No.1 Sci-fi film in SFX poll.
I think I'd have to agree not being a massive Star Wars fan

What the article doesn't make clear is that this was a web poll on their homepage - hardly a reliable gauge of public opinion . . .
For the first few days it was up Star Wars was in front by a country mile (48% of the vote at one point), and then - presumably when the Brown Coats Old Boy Network found out about it - Serenity suddenly jumped up from third or fourth to first.
Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike Serenity, but I don't think this poll is very representative of true public opinion.

According to the SFX site, Serenity won with 61% of the vote - Fix! I cry!
The Beeb are now running one of their straw polls on the above article and it doesn't look as though the Brown Coats have got to it yet as Star Wars is leading with 43.90%, Bladerunner is on 22.83% and Serenity is currently in third on 18.14% (The Matrix is on 12.41% and The Planet of the Apes has 2.72% with 4713 votes cast).

Considering Serenity barely made $40 million at the box-office and Star Wars is (with inflation) somewhere around the billion mark, you'd be right. However, it depends on how many of those people would actually be bothered to vote in a poll about it. I think a higher proportion of Firefly/Serenity fans are passionate enough about it than Star Wars fans. Then again, there are more Star Wars fans, so it all evens out.
I must admit, I'm not overly worried about the poll results whatever the general consensus, although I have to agree I'm a little surprised that
Serenity has garnered such a solid percentage - this may be due to it's recent popularity. In a way, it's kind of like comparing, say,
The Departed with
The Godfather, you know?
From my own perspective, I think it's encouraging that this controversial poll helps to perpetuate positive interest in the Firefly/Serenity franchise. If it ultimately helps contribute to convincing Universal or A.N.Other Studio into investing in a second film, then I'll be happy. But that's just my single-minded view.

I know what you're saying but I just can't bring myself to feel bad about it, sure fans rigged a poll, but it must have taken them such a lot of effort, and SFX is right to be proud to have been hijacked because something interesting has happened in the banal world of film polls for once, hence all the publicity. The net result of all of this will never shake Star Wars dominance, but it will do a power of good for Serenity, and I think that at this stage it is Whedon and not George Lucas who could make the next significant contribution to Sci Fi; so give him all the attention that you can.

The vote is for the best sci-fi film, so maybe, just maybe, some of the voting may be down to the fact that Serenity is a better film than Star Wars regardless of its place in history.
Its 30 years old now (shouldn't there be an anniversary DVD/re-release out by now?). Perhaps people not brought up on Star Wars have not been that impressed by it. Maybe some Star Wars fans saw in Serenity an improvement on the benchmark. Or maybe people are just sick to death of Star Wars.
Just because Serenity had pretty poor box office means very little in the age of DVD. Shawshank Redemption didntt do well at the box office but look how popular that is.
The voting is more than likely down to "organised" voting, but can and should Star Wars always be on the top of these sort of polls. I welcome the day where it gets knocked off of a "top spot" and there is no fuss about it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not campaigning for Star Wars here (I actually voted for Bladerunner myself).
Whilst I would agree that publicity for Serenity/Firefly is probably a good thing, I just don't like the way this has come about.
SFX have a habit of trying to be controversial with their polls and this time it looks like it has paid off for them, but I don't feel so much attention should be being given to something that has been so obviously fixed.
