That's still over a whole month away!  wacko.gif
*

Only a week after us, tho. Could be a lot worse.

Joss has posted a couple of times on the Browncoats forum recently, including his top "rejected" taglines for the film:

QUOTE
"The Future is worth Running Away From."

"The Future is All Visual and S---."

"One Captain. One Psychic. One Assassin. One Doctor. One Shepherd. Another
Assassin, but different from the first. One Mechanic. One Companion, which
is like a geisha or a courtesan, I guess sort of. One... um... did I do
Mechanic? Which movie is this?"

"If you loved Katerina Witt in 'Carmen on Ice', you'll love this."

"Mal Takes His Shirt Off Already."

"Serenity. It's like art, but in movie form."

"Get Ready For Rush Hour."

"To Infinity... and then it's a left, half a block, house with the blue
trim."

"Serenity. Like glass in a bag."

"Meet Malcolm Reynolds. He hates Scottish People." (I totally lobbied
against that one.)

"They're outnumbered, outgunned, and have no skills... Wow, they're gonna
DIE!"

"If you loved "Stealth" or "the Island".... um, actually never mind. It's
not important."

"Serenity. The most exciting film since D.W Griffifth's's private dirty
zoetropes (which were AWESOME.)"

"This Fall, Stop and Smell the Serenity."

Classic. happy.gif Second to last one I nicked for sig - LMAO!

Actually that reminds me - I saw a new episode of Firefly on Friday! (well, it was new to me anyway!).

I have no idea how I did it but it's turns out I didn't watch Bushwacked the first time around.

I put the DVD in on Friday after coming in from the pub and suddenly realised I hadn't seen the episode before - imagine my delight! (it was almost like seeing Serenity - brand new Firefly, hurrah!!).

YEEEEESSSSSSS!!! That is fantastic....I can walk to Grauman's from my work, and I can probably leave the office early (My boss is pretty decent about that kind of thing, provided I get something done to show for the day.)

Well that was a lovely way to spend the evening!

The film is excellent, far exceeded my expectations. (ooooh alliterative)

The director of the film festival was just about as excited as all of us, and was a witty compere. He introduced Joss, who then introduced the cast. We watched the film, laughing and clapping in all the right places I do believe.

Then after everyone retrieved their cameras and phones (we were asked to give them up as we went into the screen, just in case anyone decided to film it on their phones or whatever, thus causing babies to die. I blatantly just hung on to mine as I aint trusting no cinema flunky with my technology) there was a question and answer session. Some of the fans really coming into their own huh.gif

There was a happy dance, the Jayne song and a sing-a-long-a-theme-music. All the cast seemed blown away by the reception and gently ribbed the meandering questions that perhaps went on a bit too long without reaching any kind of point.

I have some quite good photos as we bagged seats in the second row, which I will endevour to post once my boy shows me the magic that it takes to get it out of my camera and on to t'internet
thirtyhelens
Fantastic! Can't wait to see the photos. biggrin.gif

I tried using my press credentials to get into this LA screening tomorrow night and was denied by Uni; not even having plugged Firefly on SciFi and, by extension, the film already helped. I'm beginning to wonder if this isn't a "press" screening at all but yet another canny attempt to drum up pre-release publicity?

I'm still going to try and get in, LOL.
nixygirl
Ack! That kinda sux Thirtyhelens!....and...odd that too???
Maybe your right...or it's just invited press?

And thanx for the little write up tigerlilly!! PLz plzzzzz get those pix up for us soon!

Someone obviously has no problem with being selfish.

You should work on that.

Giving me the tickets would be a good start smile.gif
thirtyhelens
I was about to ask the same thing. huh.gif I know there are people coming to the Grauman's screening tonight who were at the May screening, and the June screening, AND saw the finished cut at Comic-Con; I dunno, I wouldn't go yet again if that were the case, I'd let someone who hadn't seen it *cough, cough biggrin.gif* take my spot. Esp. considering space is so slim tonight and there are apparently people driving out from Arizona (OMFG!!!...???) for this.

But we'll see; at least it'll take me 5 minutes to walk home if I don't get in, LOL.
nixygirl
Heh heh I'll gladly give up my tix if any of you wanna come over to Oz to see it!

(it may be 4 times if I get a group of newbies to go to the Penrith screening on Sept 5th)

Everytime I see it, it's a 2 hour drive there and back...

1st time was a test screening.
2nd time was 90% finished
3rd to come is the completted movie, including end creds showing in 2 cinemas next to each other in Sydney, complette with press and maybe Joss.

Now....I would not see this that many times...if it wasn't so damned good. wub.gif wub.gif

The magic has been worked:

I loaded up the camera with photos as the light wasn't very good, this was one of the best. I've got media files of the Dance of Joy and the Jayne song, but I've yet to work out how to get them up.

Also went to the Joss Whedon talk today and Nathan showed up to that as well. He was a couple of seats across from me and my boy. Must've been a bit jetlagged as he was "resting his eyes" on a number of occasions. Can't have been the Joss talk sending him off as that was really interesting. Piccie of that too:

I'VE SEEN SERENITY!!!!!!

Oh, jesus. I don't think there's a hell of a lot I can say without making a god-awful mess, because honestly? I cannot stress enough how UNSPOILED you should be before seeing this movie. (I'm so, so glad I was.) Plus I'm still getting my thoughts in order (As Ash would say, "I'm still collating") But I'll do my best. Here goes...

- Joss is a bastard. (But in a loveable way.) happy.gif

- It is, without a doubt, the most entertaining movie I've seen all year. For sheer action, emotion, drama, laughter...Firefly watchers especially, be prepared to run through the gamut of every emotion known to man in the space of two hours and some change.

- If Nathan Fillion and Summer Glau don't have every script in town tossed their way after this, there's something wrong with the 'verse. Don't get me wrong, every single cast member is sublime, they own these roles and all of them shine, no matter what their screen time. But it's Cappy and the Crazy Girl who shoulder the heaviest load, and they are FAN-fuckin'-TASTIC.

- This just in....Joss is a bastard.

- It's not a perfect film. I have a few quibbles here and there, but ultimately, they are nothing that I wouldn't forgive of any Firefly episode and being on a grander scale doesn't make it any harder to forgive of the Big Damn Movie.

- I really need to see it a second time, not only to catch anything I missed. But I went in as a full-on, dyed-in-the-wool fan; I want to watch it next time from a completely objective angle, to try and see it from the POV of a Firefly virgin. Because at this point, I do believe there is enough sheer entertainment value that anyone can enjoy it - if you've never seen the show, it's still a crackin' good time at the movies. But if you have seen the show.....it's...it's...um, would it be completely lame of me to say "transcendent"???

- Oh, you know, one other thing...Joss? BASTARD!

(Yet I'm as much your bitch as ever, JW. MWAH!)

OK, I've said enough. As I noted, to say any more would be tricky and I'm looking forward to discussing it too much when it's released. The preview group were wonderful, BTW. (SoCal Browncoats RULE! LOL)

*sigh* Days like this make me glad I'm a geek. laugh.gif

To be honest I think if you've watched Firefly it's going to be very hard to view it objectively. Mainly because you already know the characters, which perhaps gives the film more depth than anyone coming to it fresh will have. You know more about the universe in which they exist and the adventures they've gone through. Which means that when the film begins it's quite "comfortable" viewing (of course then Joss quickly whips away all that comfort. You're never sure of what's going to happen next) I don't know if people coming to it fresh will find it so instantly accesible.

That said, one of the friends that I went with hasn't seen much Firefly at all and he really enjoyed it. Thought it was one of the best sci-fi films he's seen in a long time. Hopefully others will feel the same. And I guess it's very much made as 'Serenity' - standing independently of the series. Joss hasn't been afraid to make changes to the backstory that we already know. Which may annoy some, but if the films going to do well then it's go to be as entertaining a story as it can be. And it is that. In spades, and then some.
Kris
Tigerlily, I can host the media files if you want to email them to me ( PM for email address ).

Judging by your pics, I was sat about three rows behind you on the left side, so your pictures are much better than mine (less heads in the way!).

They're running a Standard Life Audience Award at the Film Festival. The audiences are given a slip and asked to indicate whether they thought the film was Excellent, Good, Not Very Good or Poor. They're then handed in after the film.

Guess what's in the lead?

The film also got a 5 star review in the Scotsman today.

Well, that's exactly what I meant. I've got all the back story, all the character development, all the emotional resonance of knowing what's happened to this crew before the film timeline and that's not going to change. What I want to do is watch the film, latch onto one moment and try to think "OK, how would I react to that if I didn't know (fill in the blank)." Just this morning I've already thought of one character in particular whose actions likely would not make as much sense to a noob as they would to someone familiar with his/her background. (Although part of that is the character's personality, and part of it is a Joss decision that might have played out differently if this were the show, not the BDM).

Yeah, any of my quibbles that are related to small-to-big-screen changes are scarcely quibbles at all. I know why he made them, they might rankle a little but they are understandable. (And as he's stated many times, his original vision for the series was a lot darker; the network pressured him to lighten it up. What we're seeing now is closer to what he envisioned originally.)

Glad to hear your friend liked it. biggrin.gif I'm still trying to encourage folks to Netflix the series or watch it on SciFi to get the full effect of the film, but they shouldn't be lost if they don't.

Indeed.

It's probably slightly unfair to be honest. I doubt anyone that went along on Monday night was going to give the film a poor rating. I can't see the same happening for Kinky Boots, no matter the depth of feeling for Nick Frost.

Hmmm, then again . . . wink.gif

Well, I made friends with the gal who was giving them out, she plans to launch a website with Firefly-inspired trinkets. I'll ask her to hook you up. happy.gif

So I spoke with Beverley (waitingforsimon - she hasn't posted here in a while), who saw the film at Edinburgh. She loved it but commented on the fact that it's much darker than the series. I went in expecting that, having already heard about how Joss's original idea for the show was darker but the network asked him to lighten it up. Hmm...I don't think it'll bother the noobs, they might actually find it cooler because of that. *shrug*
