Well, there was another press screening w/ fan participation tonight...I was ready to give up my place if someone came by who couldn't get in and was a newbie, but everyone was able to get in. If it's possible, I'm in love with the movie even MORE now. biggrin.gif So many things I missed the first time; I still have problems with a few elements here and there - the film does drag a bit in the penultimate act - but ultimately, given someone has an appreciation of smartly written sci-fi, they should have a hell of a good time if they haven't seen the show. Not having the background, I'd say you could come out of it giving it a solid 8 out of 10, at the very least. Having seen Firefly, though, it's a 14. biggrin.gif (My good friend who came this time had seen the show, and adored it; the girls in front of us had one friend who was a noob and she loved it, too.)

Last time I singled out Nathan and Summer, but I should have pointed out how utterly invaluable Chiwetel Eijofor is. Fantaaaaastic - utterly charismatic and such a formidable baddie. He's Javert to Mal's Valjean every step of the way. (And I mean that as in "I've actually read the book, yo!", not in a "I've seen the musical 50 times!" way. Though I did like the musical...it's a fuck of a lot better than Miss Saigon, that's for sure....)

Best surprise - saw the girl who I had saved a place for in line last time because she couldn't get off work early, and she tells me "I have a surprise for you, a gift to say thanks"....and then she hands me THIS!:

How's it sit? Pretty cunning, don't you think? laugh.gif

OK, I'm not going to post much right now, I'll post more later if you like....I'm too exhausted to run through the whole shebang right now. But long story short....

I WENT TO THE SERENITY PREMIERE!!! ohmy.gif

It was AMAZING. After the screening, we headed into the party and they basically opened up the doors to the VIP room for all the fans to come in. (The SoCal Browncoats list was given a ton of tickets for getting so many folks into the press screenings and I was lucky enough to snag a plus 1 for me and one of my best friends.)

The evidence...

1. Summer Glau; 2. Joss Whedon; 3. Sean Maher; 4. Alan Tudyk (OMFG ALAN!!!); 5. Morena Baccarin; 6. Ron Glass (who I shared a smoke with outside....aaah! And I quit smoking almost a year ago! But fuck it, I had a smoke with Book!); 7. Christina Hendricks (YoSafBridge in the house! OMG, what a sweetie...)

Nathan had more security on him than fuckin' Dubya...I tried, I did, but there were SO many fans and you had to find your moment. I wasn't about to bug him while he tried to grab a bite to eat...I was happy enough to sip my gin 'n' tonic and stare at him from afar. Jesus H. Christ on toast, that's a good lookin' man...

In the US they are going all out with the advertising - the TV trailer is on at least 10 times a day, and I've seen masses of posters. Roll on September 30! biggrin.gif

Maybe I should see about catching an episode or two of the series before I drop $7.75 on a ticket to that film. Judging solely from the trailer, it looks irredeemably hokey, corny, and, well... just plain dull.

Trailers are supposed to transmit a good impression of a film, not bore the prospective audience to tears! Maybe they just chose the wrong moments to highlight, but to these virgin eyes the whole thing looks like a sorry mess of ridiculous dialogue, hollow action, wooden acting, and characters so irritating and/or lifeless that I don't care a whit about them. By the look of it, it has less than one-quarter the gravitas of even Titan A.E.

If the unbiased, non-fan reviews are okay, I might consider seeing it, but, otherwise, Mr. Whedon is going to have to cook up another, more worthy scam to part me from my money.

No, tell us what you really think, Omni. Don't hold back, now. It doesn't suit you.

Well, I'm sorry if I offended your sensibilities, Mr. Fanboy, but from my admittedly uninitiated perspective it looks really, really boring. But if the reviews are decent, I'll go check it out. I promise.

Easy, there's no need to go taking things personally, I was just making a joke is all, I wasn't getting at you personally.

In all seriousness I was highly skeptical of Firefly when it first came out and the news of its cancellation only backed up my initial view that it looked cheap and nasty.

Then I actually watched it . . .

All I'd say to you, and anyone else, is give it a chance - Firefly was an excellent and inventive TV series, it wasn't preachy like Star Trek, it wasn't pretentious like Babylon 5 and it wasn't crap like Andromeda*, it was something different and I think this film is going to be as well.

I could end up coming out of the cinema, as has so often happened recently, feeling let down but I have a feeling that's not going to be the case here.

*For the record I’m a huge fan of both Star Trek and Babylon 5 – though not Andromeda which to my mind was a cheap cash-in that played on Roddenberry’s name.

SFX arrived today (good old subscriptions).

There is a big feature on the BDM and a review (it gets 5 stars). I haven't read either yet, I am determined to stay spoiler free.

There is a quite frankly amazing picture of Summer Glau, she is so purty. I was also pleased to note from the mag that Summer is in the new series of The 4400 which starts next week.

Thanks...it's glued back now. I've got to work on Friday night (boooooooo) so I think I'm going to drag a few people along to see it on Saturday. I've discovered many of my actor friends are Firefly fanatics. Yay!
Is there any New York excitingness for the premiere? Any cast people heading out this way do you know?
thirtyhelens
I don't think they're doing an East Coast premiere, but some of them may wind up on the talk shows. Check listings for Letterman, Conan, The Daily Show, anything that tapes in NY. And well, you know Lord Tudyk is in "Spamalot" through the end of November. Keep your eyes peeled if you're stuck in foot traffic anywhere near the Shubert. biggrin.gif (Be forewarned, tho, he's dyed his hair brown...)

My former editor, the lovely and brilliant NY Times film critic Manohla Dargis:

Quote:
It probably isn't fair to Joss Whedon's "Serenity" to say that this unassuming science-fiction adventure is superior in almost every respect to George Lucas's aggressively more ambitious "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith." But who cares about fair when there is fun to be had? Scene for scene, "Serenity" is more engaging and certainly better written and acted than any of Mr. Lucas's recent screen entertainments. Mr. Whedon isn't aiming to conquer the pop-culture universe with a branded mythology; he just wants us to hitch a ride to a galaxy far, far away and have a good time. The journey is the message, not him.

How in the HELL did we ever let her slip through our fingers?!

Joss's opening weekend missive to the Browncoats:

QUOTE
Well boys and girls and boys dressed as girls and girls dressed as Kaylee, the time is almost upon us. This Friday we take that old rust-bucket out of the shipyard and see if she can breach atmo. It's been a long (to paraphrase a band I like) strange trip, and it'll be nice finally to show everybody what it is we've been tinkering with all this time. You already know you have my thanks, from the hardcore fans to the softcore... fans.... let me try that again. From the people manning the booths, buying DVD sets for their friends, getting banners seen everywhere on Australian TV, raffling artwork for ticketholders (Adam Hughes, take a bow), to the most casual fan who just wants to see the flick and won't ever even read this. You guys are the fuel in the engine, the Fire in the Fly, the weird green stuff coming out of Serenity's butt. (Hmmm. Forget that last one. I'm a little bit out of control here.)

Everyone needs something to keep them going. Mal has his ship. Zoe has her integrity. Jayne has Vera. And I've got you guys.

So what now? There have been so many posts about seeing it, seeing it again, the first weekend, the second weekend, being enthusiastic without being obnoxious (and yes, it IS hard to see over the pom-pom of a Jayne hat), buying tickets in advance, making a noise... I honestly wouldn't know what to add. I can tell you this: the movie will play in about 2200 hundred theaters, which is a good number. Too many, and you get empty theaters with no energy -- not enough, and you get, well, not enough. It may be hard to find in some areas but it'll be out there. Leave no multiplex unturned! This is going to be a ground war, peeps -- we have to hold the valley for a long while. However it opens, it needs to HOLD. Instead of the Alliance we'll be fighting viewer apathy, fear of something new, the urge to wait for DVD, and Jessica Alba in a bikini. (Although I have it on good authority that she spends 90% of the film in a huge wooly parka. Make sure that gets out.)

The day this puppy opens, I'll be seeing it with my family (don't worry, there's a lot of them, and they're all paying) and then I'm off to Europe to learn the word 'Browncoats' in nine different languages -- 'cause like I said, it's all about holding. I'll never be far from a computer, though, so I can check in with y'all. Thanks for every damn thing.

And remember, amidst all the urgency to make this an event, all the work and the worry, to take two hours and just enjoy yourself. That is, after all, what all this fighting's about.

-joss.

Got to see the trailer on the big screen last night before Land of the Dead. Ninja River confuses me. I'm excited on so many levels.

Same here, caught LOTD on Wednesday night. 'Serenity' was the first trailer up - I seriously had to suppress a 'YEAH!' of excitement. Caught a new TV spot when I got home afterwards too, with yet more teasingly new snippets.

Damn me it looks goooooood, eeee!
Omniscia
Well, the trailers still leave me decidedly less than interested, but the reviews look good enough... Maybe I'll pencil in a screening some time in the near future. But first up is "A History of Violence."

Maybe I should borrow my neighbour's Firefly DVDs first, though, and see if I can get down with the whole concept. I'm still rather skeptical, as Buffy left me quite cold.

But overall, I am leaning in favour of giving it a fair chance. wink.gif
thirtyhelens
You don't need to see Firefly to enjoy Serenity, but you will get an extra bang for your buck if you do.

And for what it's worth, at least half of the Firefly fans I know were not Buffy or Angel watchers, and didn't/don't necessarily embrace either. (I'm kind of in the middle - adore Firefly, like Buffy quite a lot but don't watch it a lot since, and never really caught on to Angel. Not a fan of David Boringanus, to be honest, I'd rather watch paint dry. Tho it improves when Spike is around. laugh.gif )

I saw the trailer a while ago in the US and more recently over here and both times I didn't even bother to suppress my glee, which took the form of a rather loud yelping noise that got me some odd looks...

Anyway, trailer looks awesome, not too keen on the posters to be honest, I don't know what it is about them but they look a bit weird to me.

Looking forward to it greatly and I'm gonna take one of my friends who I converted to Firefly some weeks ago as well as a non-Firefly fan who I intend to convert. Then we'll probablt get quite drunk, as is the custom on our cinema trips.
thirtyhelens
Well, shit - it only took in $10M this weekend. sad.gif Though it actually did the best per-screen average because it was in far, far fewer theaters than Flightplan, which came in first and didn't make that much more. If Uni is smart they'll attempt to build on word of mouth - the reviews ARE good, and the crowds seem to be loving it - and open it in more theaters next weekend.
Jessopjessopjessop
Well, I had my doubts, what with my much-publisised dislike of Buffy, but wanted to give it a go, so I've started watching Firefly on DVD.

I've only seen the pilot and the first three episodes so far, and I'm enjoying it alot.

It's extremely well made, with interesting people, intiguing ideas, and, above all, it takes its science fiction seriously: no sound in space - cool! The design is some of the best I've seen in a science fiction TV show, on a scale we haven't seen since Babylon 5, but with a greater realism.

The dialogue, while straying dangerously close to Buffy-style wittiness, doesn't grate, largely because it fits this set of characters to banter more than it did a bunch of annoying teens. Each character is distinct and compelling, even while being drawn in wide brush-strokes at times.

So, I'm rather looking forward to seeing the rest of the series, preferably before the movie comes out!
Zoe
