Welcome aboard the Firefly wagon, Jessopotronic. Good to hear you's enjoying it.

I'm gonna be busy cramming the whole series in this week too. Eee.

It's just a nice change to have good science fiction on TV. As the least popular genre on television, it is rare to people trying to make good stuff, and viewing figures are always lower - just look at the fate of not only Firefly, but Babylon 5, Farscape and Enterprise.

I even picked up an Aliens reference - a quote I believe, but can't remember it.

Agreed. I'll admit I have never been an especially big fan of TV sci-fi - Star Trek, Babylon 5, Farscape et al never really interested me to be perfectly honest. But Firefly has proved an extremely pleasant exception to the rule.
thirtyhelens
I'm a little in the middle - I enjoyed quite a lot of what Farscape I saw. Star Trek TNG and DS9 were good, but Voyager and Enterprise....feh. Babylon 5....well, famous last words? wink.gif

Firefly, on the other hand, is the only one of all of these that, had it been given a decent run, I would have busted my ass not to miss. (Which was not the case with Joss's previous shows, either.)

I didn't actually like Farscape, but it was a very rich world they created, with great aliens, interesting design and quite dark storylines. I just never liked any of the characters. TNG at its best was excellent, very poor soap opera at its worst.

But as for Babylon 5... I heartily disagree with Mr. Bisley on that one. Series 1-3 were the some of, if not the, best space opera SF there has been on television. It was one of the boldest exponents of a series-long story arc, had an incredible time- and space-spanning backstory, fabulous ships, very original aliens, and a host of interesting characters. I remember the first appearance of the Shadows as one of the most chilling science fiction moments ever. Unfortunately it also fell victim to the dreaded ratings.

The main reason I never really *got* the Farscapes, Babylons and Treks (well okay, Next Generation did kinda get me hooked), was the 'humanoid' aliens - just seemed a little, i dunno, naff I guess - once you've seen so many walking/talking aliens, they get a little, well, old. Comparitively, Firefly is much more grounded in reality, bein' sans aliens an' all, which is another reason it won me over - daring to break free of the usual constraints of TV sci-fi formula.

That's one of the things that make it easy-watching for me. Fair enough if you want to get some aliens in once in a while, but people strutting round day after day with a bit of lumpy make-up on doesn't really do it for me. But then, I don't really think aliens would work in Firefly somehow.

Absolutely. But I like that it's addressed - the way they handle it in "The Message", as a sort of carnival side show shyster thing where Simon identifies the "alien" corpse as a cow fetus, is classic. wink.gif And of course, Wash's reaction...."Oh, my god, it's GROTESQUE! Oh, and there's something in a jar..."

Followed by

Zoe: Scared her away again, did you?
Simon: This may come as a shock, but I'm actually not very good at talking to girls.
Zoe: Why, is there someone you ARE good at talking to?

Wash: Do not fear me. Ours is a peaceful race, and we must live in harmony...

So many funny lines from that show.
I still haven't been to see Serenity yet, due to lack of cash and people to go with, but I'm fed up now so I'm going to go by myself on Thursday. There's a 1pm showing that should be nice and quiet. biggrin.gif

Very positive review on the Empire website. I've never seen Firefly but the trailer looked good so I'll be checking this out I think.
gulfcoast_highwayman
Rossy was waxing lyrical about it last night.

He said something along the lines of why couldn't the three most recent Star Wars films have been a quarter as good?
thirtyhelens
Eeeheeee. Get thee to the cinemas, UK folk. The movie needs the international b.o. BAD (though I think word of mouth should help it do as well if not better this weekend in the States.)
Ade
Done and done. Hoping to catch Serenity on Friday if it comes to Lynn this week. I've already been doing my damnedest to spread the word amongst my friends - should be supporting that with plenty of "absolutely fantastic" soundbites once I've actually seen it.

Oh yeah.............

I love preview shows!

Only problem, as much as I loved it, why did Wash have to die? Hell, why did any of 'em have to die? I left the ciname with an immense sadness over losing Wash and Book (especially Wash). Punters who don;t know the show when they go to see it won't feel this way. Damit there should have been two versions, one for proper fans where everybody lives!
thirtyhelens
I consider myself a proper fan and saddened as I am - Wash was my favorite, y'know - I don't know that I'd change it. It's completely unsurprising in the larger canon of Whedon's work - he kills beloved characters ALL the time, often with little warning. In Book's case, his death before we found out the truth of his past is frustrating but it might still come out. (I have some theories.) And Nathan is so damn good in that scene. In Wash's case - yeah, it fucking hurts, a LOT. But a) he did save them all from certain death, b) the sudden nature of his death makes the entire final act work, because you genuinely don't know if any of them are going to live through the battle, and c) it fits with the realism within fantasy concept of the show. Yeah, it's the future and people live in space but there are no aliens to speak of. Yes, heroes exist, but they don't neccessarily die heroes' deaths...they die suddenly, and for no good reason, just like anyone else might.

Don't get me wrong, I have problems with the movie. Starting with Mr. Universe ...sorry, Joss. I love Krumholtz, but that character does NOT work other than as a useful plot device.
gulfcoast_highwayman
I just miss him, ya know?

What pact have the cast signed with devil? They are all getting even better looking!

Very nicely put - pretty much exactly how I felt when I left the cinema. And boy was it ever worth the wait! I couldn't wipe the grin off my face through much of the film, I was enjoying it that much - I think know if I hadn't already seen Firefly I most likely wouldn't have appreciated it half as much as I did, and more likely may have missed out altogether on probably the best trip to the movies of the year so far.

For the un'Versed, it is still a thoroughly enjoyable film with plenty of humour to keep it buoyant, and action set-pieces that...well, let me just say that Mr Whedon has clearly proved he is more than capable of taking the franchise to a higher level - let's hope the box office take is sufficient to convince Universal to stay aboard for more.

"I am a leaf on the wind...watch me soar" *goosebumps*

And I have a question: Did anyone stay to the end of the credits? Just wondering in case I might have missed anything extra?

Oh yes...me too.
Finally went to see it yesterday - sat in the cinema on my own and laughed, cried and cheered all the way through it. I loved so much of it, and even though I was so shocked when first Book and then Wash died - the Book scene was awesome, nathan was amazing - and Wash's sudden and unexpected death made me shout out 'NO!' in the middle of it I agree with helens that I don't know I'd change it.
I need to see it at least twice more to really have a formed opinion - the first time around for me was all about being excited and not taking enough in!
Oh and P.S. - I went to work afterwards, and was talking to my friend about the movie, and she said 'oh, did I tell you - I met Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk in a bar back in July, and hung out with them all night.' *bibble* She's promising me photos so I'll post them up. I, however, want to kill her in jealousy. *green*

Sweeeeet! I really enjoyed the score. Next CD purchase lined up already methinks... smile.gif

And on reflection, I don't think there's anything I would change about the film - apart from perhaps that slightly awkward looking crash-landing (a minor, minor niggle, admittedly. Wash's departure was indeed a great shock, and a regrettable loss, but for me the film provided the full spectrum range of emotional rollercoaster - it pulled all the right strings in my opinion.

It's been a day and it still hurts. Why Joss? WHY?

I know he likes to do this from time to time, I still mourn Fred, and I understand why it was important to the film, but it's not right. They need to steal some holo technology from Red Dwarf and give him a hard light drive for the sequel

I've just seen it. Wow. Just wow.

Actually, not just wow. That was one of the most exciting, funny and emotionally affecting films I've seen in ages. I loved it. I think thirtyhelens is dead right about Wash's death - it meant I genuinely did not know how many characters Whedon was prepared to sacrifice in the final act, and was scared for them all. I'm certainly going to miss him, though. Book felt like less of a loss to me. He was an intruiging character, but there was never much made of him.

I saw it with my girlfriend, whose only prior exposure to Firefly was an episode I made her watch just before we decided to see the film, to see whether was likely to enjoy it. In fact, she more than enjoyed it: she thought it was excellent too.

There are so many things I loved about the film. First, the structure: a classic escalation of scale from a simple bank job to one of the 'verses closely kept secrets. Second, the interplay between the characters - their easy banter, their obvious regard and care for each other, their antagonisms and attachments. Third, the Reavers, who finally make an appropriately dramatic appearance. They're built up well as the ultimate, implacable evil, and live up to their reputation. Fourth, River, who owns the film. When River finally gets to work on the Reavers - well, that made me very happy. I'm sure there's more. I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

Thanks. smile.gif I can see where you're coming from about Book, but I think more than anything it's that sense of the remaining mystery that the show never got to fully explore. I did come to love that character and would love for his past to ultimately be revealed some day. Though the film didn't do so well in the States on its second weekend. *sigh* Fuck.

Yeah, I was really impressed with how well that worked in the film. Since in the show the Reavers are a menacing but mostly unseen presence - except for that one kid who goes nuts and turns into one in "Bushwhacked", we never see them on screen, only the fear that they strike in everyone. And their truly scary lookin' ship.

p.s. about those cast pics.....yeah. WOOF. Not enough of the menfolk, tho - where are our drooly Fillion close-ups?! And I want to be Mrs. Morpheus when I grow up. laugh.gif

It is certainly well worth it - I've not long returned from my second viewing already. I've got a busy week ahead of me, and I don't know how long a run it's likely to get, so I took the opportunity to go see it again. And it had me just as thrilled second time out.

Great to hear you and your girlfriend both enjoyed it so much, Chappers - it's wonderful to hear how much people have been taken with this film, and I'm so glad to be part of it! I sincerely hope it receives enough word of mouth to make it as successful as it deserves to be - it's sad to hear that its second weekend in the States hasn't been so good though. I think the UK takings may suffer slightly, given it has considerable competition from the likes of bound-to-be-highly-popular Wallace & Gromit feature, being released on the same day and all. Word of mouth could prove vital - you can't stop the signal, as somebody says....let's hope that proves true.
