Wahey, good work Punkass! I've just been watching it while I was on here and that line made me giggle to much to let it go astray.

The girl's mum had found a stash of chocolate in her bedroom so laced it with laxatives.

It's been so fascinating watching the many, many reactions to Wash's death. I guess my only addition to this line of discussion is that it's certainly not an isolated reaction and a lot of the hardest, hardest of hardcore Firefly geeks are reacting the same way. (And not just the ones turning up at screenings in Hawaiian shirts.) Personally, Wash was a favorite and it's hard for me, too, but though I can understand why people are having this reaction I can't quite get there myself. The rest of the movie is too good, and it's too easy for me to play devil's advocate and try to understand why JW made that decision. Given that he's stated many times that Wash is his surrogate voice in the show, I can't fathom that it was a rash decision on his part to kill him off. I'll also grant you that IF there are further sequels, it's going to be a very different dynamic without Wash but I can't imagine it won't be worth watching for a million different reasons. Not the least of which is Zoe's process of mourning, which we don't see much in the movie and I don't think we're meant to; she strikes me as the sort who wouldn't let the others see her grieve, but that can't possibly last forever, not in such close quarters on that ship.

It's also interesting from a perspective of history repeating itself. Virtually every major character death on Buffy was met with some amount of the same adverse reaction.

On a different note - could someone recommend a Serenity/Firefly site/forum type thing cos i'm a little intimidated by the range of choice and dedication of some of the browncoats and that. Where do i start? Cheers.

The only Buffy death I cared about was Anya, but since that was in the last ever episode, it didn't matter so much. The prospect - albeit uncertain - of Serenity sequels puts a different edge on it this time.

But like the song says,
I don't care, I'll still see
This film Whedon made for me

I'm a member of the Browncoats forum from the Serenity movie website. There's a board from the Fox people as well, but I quite like this one. The forum is huuuuuge though - 46000 members or something insane!
However, Nathan Fillion does pop on to say hi every so often. biggrin.gif

Arse, my local cinema is pulling Serenity tomorrow so it doesn't look like I'll get to see it on the big screen again (I'm off work at the moment with a nasty cold and going tomorrow night is very unlikely . . .).

I had expected it to be on for at least another week . . . sad.gif

Aw, duderino, that sucks. There must be somewhere else that'll have it on for longer that you can go to - the effects look so lovely on the big screen.

Same here. I haven't posted often, though.

Be warned, also - this forum is run by FanPimp as promo for the film; they also ran the ShaunSquad board for SotD, which was pulled in January just after the film was released on R1 DVD. Serenity comes out on DVD in December, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's a sell-by date on this forum too. tongue.gif

ETA dammit, g_h, I really needed a warning label for those black & white photos. *snerk*

Possibly, but I don't fancy a trip into either Portsmouth or Brighton to see it!

They may have it on at the local film club at some point but they're a bit up themselves and as Serenity dosn't have subtitles, isn't filmed in black and white and wasn't based on a Jane Austin novel they probably won't show it.
Ade
My local cinema has yet to show it - and it's likely they won't at all now.
For some reason, Kinky Boots was deemed more important a release
here in the rural hole of King's Lynn. Thank Joss I hauled ass out to
Peterboro' to see it twice! I might yet try for a hat-trick!

I am skint though, but what the fudge.

Pre-wash, I think. It must have been weeks ago. I am still suffering from his death though. I tried watching an episode yesterday and I teared up seeing the man. He so loved his wife and life. WHY JOSS? WHY?
Raven
I've been re-watching Firefly since watching Serenity and although there are scenes in it that I've found more poignant now the overall viewing experience hasn't been damaged to my mind.

Whedon has a habit of doing away with characters but the shows in question have usually been just as good afterwards - and in some cases even better! (Doyle buying the farm in Angel for example - he was an excellent character but the show carried on and went from strength to strength after he left.).

What will happen next - if anything - in the Firefly 'verse? Who knows, but I bet it will be well written and have good characters.
Omniscia
Well, despite my skepticism and trepidation, I am trekking to the theatre in an hours time to catch a matinee screening -- the second-to-last screening, I might add. It leaves tomorrow.

I'll check back in later with the lowdown on how a neophyte with a strange aversion to most things Whedon handled the film. Hopefully it is as good as its reviews. wink.gif

Also, to paint it in a particular light, happy, loving relationships tend not to last forever in the Whedonverse. Which if there are further Firefly ventures should make us very, very worried now that the clock is ticking on Kaylee and Simon. Oh, come on, Joss just ONCE let someone live happily ever after!!! biggrin.gif

In a word: Whoa.

That was nothing like the trailers led me to believe it would be. I'm not even sure I saw the right movie!

Whatever the heck I saw, it struck a near-perfect chord, combining decent pacing, interesting characters, wry charm, and some very adequate action, to create one of the most sheerly-enjoyable sci-fi flicks I've seen in years. Unlike most recent examples of the genre, this didn't get too bogged down in stifling earnestness, nor did it drown in a sea of cheese and popcorn.

While I certainly wouldn't place it on the same shelf as the recent Battlestar Galactica series, this film has succeeded admirably in giving me (additional) hope for science fiction. Maybe Lucas didn't kill it, after all...

Now I've just got to get my hands on that television series!

I think they've taken it off of the Odeon in Sheffield now as well, though i think the UGC place will have it for a week or tow more since they have more screens to spare. I'll try and see it again during the week if I can, then my next best hope will be to get my Uni to screen it, which shouldn't prove immensely difficult, but would be mostly down to chance, I'll get right on it anyway!
Raven
I checked other local cinemas and it's still on in all the screens in Portsmouth but mainly (Odeon and UCI) at really silly times. The Vue has it on at decent times but it's still a 30/40 minute train ride and a £6.00 seat, not sure I can be arsed.

*claps hands*

Ooh, is that a definite? If so, eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Incidentally, speaking of the DVD (and I know the extended/deleted scenes were already mentioned in spoiler form), according to the BBFC website, they have classified the following Widescreen DVD additional material (October 4th-10th):

- Joss Whedon Introduction (3m 52s)
- Director's Audio Commentary
- Deleted and Extended Scenes (13m 25s) (details already posted)
- We'll Have A Fruity Oaty Good Time (1m 35s)
- Future History (4m 27s)
- What's In A Firefly (6m 30s)
- Outtakes (6m 02s)
- Re-Lighting The Firefly (9m 38s)

There are also two different durations listed for 'Serenity' itself: 113m 59s and 119m 16s. The longer duration was rated in August (presumably the cinema edit) while the shorter version was rated on 11th October (edited, cos I got them the wrong way round - gah!) - and refers to the DVD Director's Audio Commentary.

As the site states:
"When a film is transferred to video the running time will be shorter by approximately 4% due to the differing number of frames per second. This does not mean that the video version has been cut or re-edited."

Not that there's much to spoil, but I thought I'd spoiler tag it anyway, just in case people want to indulge in a little DVD-release-date-anticipation or summink like that.
thirtyhelens
Hmm. I was thinking I might actually hold out for a larger disc, figuring the December release wouldn't have much on it but this sounds pretty good. And I suppose if there's one DVD title I'm not that upset about investing in twice, it's this one. happy.gif This might very well be the only one. *wibble*

Yeah, it don't sound half bad, do it? I would have liked to see a lengthier behind-the-scenes featurette, but I am glad that we've got a reasonable batch of extra bits and bobs. But I wouldn't put it past them to release a 2-disc special edition at a later date, after the sales for this one have gone through the roof. I'm certainly not averse to a re-investment. smile.gif
