The "A Filmmaker's Journey" extra is on R2 as well as R4, right? I just watched it last night - great stuff.

oooh, really? Might have to get the R2 one as well as my R1, which has a surprising lack of extras. Am I missing any easter eggs? I can't seem to find any.

Yah! On the main menu, while 'Play' is selected on the top left, click the left arrow and a portion of the menu should light up on the right hand side of the screen. Click "enter" and you are taken to a short featurette on the making of the Fruity Oaty Bar commercial.

The easter egg is on all regions. BTW, if you are going to get a different region go for R4; it has all the R2 stuff PLUS an Q&A from Australia, featuring our own nixygirl apparently. (I haven't watched it yet, nix, just got it!) I bought mine from EzyDVD:
http://www.ezydvd.com.auI forgot to mention, best part of many best parts of
A Filmmaker's Journey: Nathan. Lots of Nathan. Being a silly bitch. Oh, yes.

oh yea....I'm fairly cringeworthy in it.
It's totally worth it tho...and filmakers journey is a pisser!!
Joss is in England at the moment promoting the DVD release....he was on More4 today on 'The Last Word' with a snob, a fangirl and a philistine host.
It was good to watch him spin out tho at the snob.
download it hereThis was filmed by digi cam from a tv for impatient arses like myself.
Also he talks about working hard at getting a Spike movie made for DVD on his BBC radio 5 interview
here.And.....he'll be on the Phil Jupitus show on Radio 6 tomorrow morning, sometime between 9-10.

Although, there was a downside to watching it last night! When I went to bed, I couldn't get to sleep for hours... and what did I have accompanying me for TWO BLOODY HOURS...
"Take my love. Take my land. Take me where I cannot stand." Just those words... nothing else...

The cannon that Mal uses has the symbol of the evil corporation from the Alien films on it, which fits in nicely since that was a Chinese-American conglomerate as well.
I was much more surprised the Lasseter gun, since that was a direct reference to John Lasseter who co-wrote Toy Story with Joss. Seemed like such an odd thing to drop into a series.

Although, I think Yutani is a Japanese connection, not chinese...
maian
Mar 28 2006, 12:39 PM
Maybe, it's certainly a connection between an American and an Asian company. It probably is Japanese seeing as the main reason for the Chinese connection in Firefly was that is actually happening now in the economic sphere; when Alien was written they probably wouldn't have been able to predict that would happen, whereas Japan was rising quite rapidly in the 70's and would make more sense.

Mar 28 2006, 12:49 PM
Do you think Joss even thought of the coincidence... the oriental coincidence I mean.
maian
Mar 28 2006, 12:55 PM
I can't help but imagine that it must have entered his mind at some point; for a man who plans every detail of his shows and films, it seems a bit to big of a coincidence. The fact that he wrote Alien: resurrection as well seems to suggest that he put it in as a conscious nod to the attentive and those who were familiar with his other work.

Just out of curiosity, how many people have others converted to Firefly? I've only successfully converted one person since half my friends aren't into sci-fi, and the other half have already seen it. I'm hoping to convert my sister as she was a big Buffy fan, but I don't think I'll have much luck.

Well, Lasseter did screw Joss out of his writing credit. Maybe it was a snarky thing?

Did he? His name is still on the
credits and he was nominated for the Oscar along with Lasseter and the others. I know that he was screwed out of a credit on Speed but I always thought that he had a good relationship with the Pixar guys. He also laid the groundwork for the sequel with the idea of toys being abandoned as their owners grow up so he can't be that made at them all.

Hmmmmmm maybe I'm incorrect. I've got a JW screenwriting DVD here, which I'm about to watch, where I am sure he talks about being uncredited for Toy Story (irregardless of IMBD). I'll get back to you on this one.
