constantly bored
7 and 8 were just so gaddam awful it doesn't bear thinking about.

I might be wrong here, but when BBC 2 recently repeated Red Dwarf they cut it off part way through series 7. Either that or I lost interest and went to bed early.
AusChick
I've yet to watch series 8 all the way through. I really couldn't bear to watch it!
I watched the first couple of episodes and then just couldn't bring myself to watch it any more.

Series 7 I could bear to watch so long as I pretended to myself that it was not Red Dwarf but some other tv show. Then it seemed OK and not too bad.

Series 6 had some excellent story lines and ideas but the dialogue was crap.
Far too repetitive and predictible. The characters became completely 2 dimensional and they didn't actually *say* anything. It was just the same Space Corp Directive jokes and "my nostril hairs are vibrating faster than a........" jokes over and over.

Series 5 and before were good.

But that's just my humble opinon

Cheers

One of my friends said it's the best show ever, I have never seen it. He showed me a poster for it and he explained each character and it sounds real funny (in like a "that's so stupid" sort of way). So any one like it out there or have any info on it, recommend it, what?

It's worth trying to track down. Some of my fondest memories are of late Saturday nights watching Red Dwarf on the local PBS station, with my pals. They don't carry it anymore, unfortunately, but at least we've got the DVDs. My tapes were beginning to wear out. wink.gif

Try your local public library; they may have it. Mine's had them available for years, first on VHS, and now DVD.

Series 6 did feature some punny one line gags but most of the characterisation remained intact, particularly the fact that after 6 series the crew had become half semi decent(ish) at the space hero stuff. Series 7 and 8 (especially 8) did away with all that character evolution and dissapeared into HoHO Thigh slap sit-com land. The odd nice momment in series 7 aside.

Here however is how I see a way to improve the matter in series IX (9 to you and me):

*The Series opens to reveal that the crew (ie Cat, Rimmer and Lister) have been stuck in VR for sometime, since Gunmen or possibly even BTL!

*This would explain (a) Why Kochanski looks different (it's Lister sees her in his minds eye) -b- Why Kryten started to behave to oddly (Kryten isn't IN the VR world, this is just a mish mash of how Lister, cat and Rimmer percieve him) and -c- why series 7 and 8 where rubbish/why Red Dwarf became longer and made of pooey CGI/the 2 million inexcusable plot hole errors.

*Could Give "Kochanski" a new role as a vindictive computer program trying to stop the boys from the Dwarf from escaping VR thus ending her Life.

* Could feature stuff from the BTL book!

Sorry about that just had to get that out of my system. Also now that the DVD's are out has anyone else noticed that the end credit music was re-recorded for series 5 onward.
nixygirl
I agree...could feature stuff from books!!!!

there's some lovely moments in the books...going thru the blackhole and seeing the rings of life....Lister being left to grow old on the rubbish dump of earth and having meaningful relationships with his giant cockaroach friends....

and best of all....the full BTL experience! With amazonian woman, a wonderful life and Risk played and being won by Rimmer against some of the worlds greatest dictators!

also I hate the new Kochanski! I want the old one....and not only that...it was way too easy for her to have crossed over like that!

That actress isn't Kochanski for me and sometimes I kinda feel like Kryten towards her!

Yeah, but Rob Grant had involvement in the books, and these days Doug Naylor seems intent on wiping out any memory we have of those halcyon days.

which is why the last few seasons have gone haywire....

I was ecstatic when I saw the first episode of Red Dwarf VIII come on screen, since I hadn't known they'd made a new series. I was house-sitting for my neighbours, and had come by to feed their cats, and turned on the television, and, there it was...

And then Starbug flew up a rat's arse. mad.gif
Douglas Nicol
Put it this way, It's maybe not much consolation, but if you don't like Red Dwarf VIII, it's guaranteed to be at least 100 times better than the majority of the crap that's on TV nowadays like "I'm a 2 bit never been would be celebrity get me out of here" or "Average Joe" or any of the house decorating/house buying programs.

Ok cool.
I just hope it's done like a proper episode.... and not just a clips show featuring some of the cast speaking into a 'black-box recorder' with dubious linking dialogue saying things like Oh Mister Lister Sir, This is reminiscent of that time when you and Mr Rimmer thought it would be a good idea, to swapped bodies. Remember that?

It's a shame they never made a film.
I think the time for a Red Dwarf movie has passed now too. They've had it planned for years, but never got the funding. I always thought that regardless of the cast's age (and weight), an RD film would still look good & would reflect some of the later Star Trek films when Shatner & co were old & fat, but still great & what they do. ... Now there's a new Trek on the horizon, if they ever did make the Dwarf movie, the joke on this level would no longer be topical.

I reckon someone will eventually pick it up a good few years from now, perhaps even over a decade, as there is a good movie in there. Particularly if they made something close to the first novel.

Yeah, I remember all the gravitas oozing out of Charlie's Angels.
Ew that sounded very wrong.

I agree about the later Red Dwarf episodes though.
They gave up on the good character development and dialogue and just went for cheap gags instead.

Oh, and P.S....

New Red Dwarf Specials Confirmed

Announced by Dave, detailed here.

19 September, 2008

New specials? Proper information? After all the rumours? Oh smeg yes.

reddwarf.co.uk has the facts. As announced by Robert Llewellyn for Grant Naylor Productions this week at the UKTV seasonal press launch, the project is a short series of brand new specials to celebrate the 21st birthday of Red Dwarf.

New Red Dwarf Specials Confirmed New Red Dwarf Specials Confirmed New Red Dwarf Specials Confirmed

Doug Naylor will be masterminding the four half-hour instalments, and the regular cast will all be reprising their iconic roles. They are being made by GNP for UKTV's free-to-air channel, Dave - our new best friends!

Red Dwarf repeats on Dave - including an anniversary weekend run - have picked up remarkable numbers since the channel was reborn on Freeview, and it's becoming clear to all concerned that the show is picking a new, third generation audience. With the usual involvement from Red Dwarf partners BBC Worldwide, you can also expect international broadcasts to follow (and, we'd imagine, a top-quality DVD release in the fullness of time).

"It's very new news to me - I really only fully heard the details yesterday," Robert told comedian/host Michael McIntyre. "We're doing four new shows with the original cast. Two of them are going to be, like, proper episodes of Red Dwarf. One of them is so exciting I've been asked not to say anything about that because other people will steal the idea - and it is a great idea, quite challenging for us as performers. And the other one is a kind of behind-the-scenes-y... the truth. There's been so many rumours and gossip about Red Dwarf, about whether there's going to be a movie and whether we all get on, all those things... The downside for me, which is just dawning on me now, is I've got to do the 'rubber' thing again, which I haven't done for ten years."

For the record, and direct from the makers, the details of the four shows right now - while wholly subject to change - are:
Show One - The Making Of The Specials
A highly entertaining look at what goes on behind the scenes on a Red Dwarf production.
Show Two - Red Dwarf Special: Part One
The cast get back into character, and costume, a decade on...
Show Three - Red Dwarf Special: Part Two
The adventure continues...
Show Four - A Clip Show With a Serious Difference
The cast do it their way. Red Dwarf as you have never, ever seen it before!

The shows will broadcast sometime in 2009 and, if successful, could pave the way for further Red Dwarf TV projects. Thanks to movie and broadcaster wrangles, Grant Naylor haven't been in a position to produce new Red Dwarf since Series VIII went out to audiences of over eight million in 1999. This exciting development suggests a new and shiny future for everyone's favourite sci-fi comedy.

Chloë Annett better not be involved...

I have still to watch Red Dwarf properly. I think I've seen maybe a total of three episodes in my life. Despite this, I did see fit to purchase Smeg Ups on VHS more than a few years ago, which I recall enjoying immensely. I really ought to catch up.

Watch them all in series order, up to and including series 6. ... and then stop. Honestly, if you go your entire life without see series 7 or 8, then it'll be ok.

Please do this. For me. For yourself.... But you'll never be able to thank me for it. You'll never know the true extent of the hideous disaster I'll have saved you from witnessing.

I really don't get why people hate on series 7 and 8 so much, both still have strong episodes, and series 8 at least looked like it was trying to get back to its roots in some ways.
Jon 79
QUOTE (Douglas Nicol @ Jan 29 2009, 12:22 AM) *
I really don't get why people hate on series 7 and 8 so much,

Because they sucked. Series 7 changed too many things, lost the concept of the original show by getting them back to earth at the touch of a button, and the inclusion of another human (a woman!). Also the lack of the 2nd writer, and a live studio audience showed. And the new filming style was rubbish... I could've put up with the steady-cam & fourth wall, but that jerky 'film-like' post effect was terrible.
After that, yes series 8 was better. It was obviously trying to get back to it's roots, with the inclusion of the 1st Holly, and Rimmer's character returning to how he was in series 2. But the writing still wasn't there. Both series 7 and 8 had become farcical. Red Dwarf was a comedy, but rarely entered farce territory before series 7.
Having said all that Cassandra was a good episode. Possible because the sci-fi element of the program was back to the standard it used to be.

Series 8 was good compared to series 7 but neither are worth comparing to the first 5 years. It's like saying Alien Resurrection was good compared to AVP, but neither are in the same league as Ridley Scott's film.

I was a Red Dwarf fan for many years. Part of me wishes they'd called it a day when Rob Grant left.
melzilla
Yea, what Jon said!
