Following a boozy office Christmas party, I managed to sober up at a coffee house enough to get into the QE2 Hall on the South Bank to watch a fantastic, 1 off Aqualung, Christmas performance.
The audience were all youngish funky type-couples and students. Acoustics and atmosphere in the venue were top notch. 'Special guests' included Melanie Blatt from All Saints fame performing a couple of numbers with the Aqualung boys...Clayhill, an acoustic four piece and Duke Special (I think this was his name), who played piano and performed top quality and original songs with a fantastically sexy Irish accent!
After a short interval, the audience were left very chilled out and ready for the main event. Aqualung did not disappoint. They combined old classics like 'strange and beautiful' with new and unheard material. The gig felt very intimate due to the venue and Matt's chilled out rapport with the audience. All songs were performed with passion and feeling and left your spine tingling.
The highlight of the show for me was the performance of 'Brighter than the sun'...a beautiful song on the CD, but live, it blew the audience away. I must admit, I was in tears by the end of it!
After a short encore, the show ended and a room of emotionally touched individuals were unleashed onto the southbank to spread the love to the rest of the capital...
This is the second time Ive seen Aqualung, and I hope its not the last....If you get the chance go and see them....you can take your partner, sibling, parent or grandparents and I promise they will enjoy it as much as you do!
