Difinitely seen that gag...but not 100% if it was Cleese..and can't place it.
I have seen that gag on TV. But it was Kenny Everett not John Cleese. I do have a nagging memory of seeing a film clip on some chat show or other and that may have been John Cleese but I cannot remember anymore than that. I suspect the film bombed and he know longer talks about it.
Bloodbath at the House of Death is probably what it's from.

Well it was 20 years since I saw it. I'ts been bugging me for years. Come to think of it it was Kenny Everett.
