Hello all, just popped over here from the Channel 4 Comedy Zone forum to see if we can drum up some support for our campaign to get Green Wing to win the People's Choice Award in the British Comedy Awards next Weds. If you want to support Mark Heap (and make GW's legion of fangirls very happy), text "comedy wing" to 82290 or call 09011 323004. Full details over at www.britishcomedyawards.co.uk. Cheers!

Why?

Green Wing was terrible. Full of "aren't we cool" editing, unfunny gags and smug performances. Mark Heap was OK, but he was basically playing a nasty Brian (well, in terms of voice) with less character development.
J.R
On a better opinion.

yes I will vote. thanks for informing us.

Stella MM
Green Wing rocked. To say Mark was "only playing a nasty Brian" undermines his great performance.

I can't vote, though, as my mobile won't let me call or text premium lines. Boo! Someone else'll just have to vote twice.
Zoe
I have to say though I think Green Wing took a while to find its feet by the end of the series it was very funny indeed. Yes Mark's performance was hammy, but that was the point of the show - realism was never what they were going for. I couldn't see anything of Brian in Alan - except that they had the same face - what a copy!
superfurryandy
My original opinion of Green Wing was that it was trying to hard to be different and missing out the funnies - on repeated viewing, that has changed, and it definitely has it's moments, with Heap shining away like the dysfunctional star he is. Won't be voting though, I have better things to spend my money on.

I agree and I don't understand why its so popular here, its the kind of show that Spaced was the anithesis to.

SPACED and GREEN WING could harldy be said to have totally opposing styles and content(!)

or is that not what you meant

I'd agree that 'Green Wing' could hardly be called the antithesis of 'Spaced'. Surely something like 'My Family' is more suitable to be called its opposite?

Their surrealism and not relying on conventional 'sit-com' plot devices are surely at least two things they have in common.
williambuckrogers
AND they're on the same channel.

wink.gif
UNS
Green Wing relies on conventional, arrogant, smarmy wacky characters and relies on humour about people shagging and talking about shagging and insulting eachother and just lots of other mean spirited and crude humour.
williambuckrogers
whereas tim and daisy are paragons of sympathetic virtue?

it isnt writ as large in SPACED but i hardly think those aspects are completely absent from the characters.

perhaps the difference you are trying to explain is the fact that GREEN WING is more knowing and obvious in its attempt to drag the laugh out of the viewer - its more slapstick and vulgar, indeed, which is probably what doesn't appeal to you compared to SPACED.
Stella MM
I don't think Green Wong was mean-spirited overall. Sure, there were some grotesque characters like Guy, Alan Statham or Joanna Claw but there was good-natured comedy too. Erm... I can't give you an example right this second, but it'll come to me.

The other thing it's got in common with Spaced is an excellent, well-rounded, interesting non-stereotyped female lead. (I'll conveniently ignore the fact that Joanna's a crude stereotype of a sex-mad woman having a menopausal crisis).

And Buck's right - Daisy and Tim aren't all sweetness and light. What about Daisy instantly forgetting about Richard when she gets the job interview? Tim being stubborn about Sarah at the end of series 1?

Good point. I agree fully. Green Wing was a case of too many cooks, I think, and seemed like they were unable to decide whether it was a sketch show or a sitcom.
UNS
But when Tim and Daisy are selfish its in a humane way, and there also understandable mistakes, all humans have flaws but you still have an attachment to them, There's no characters on Green Wing That I feel any sympathy for.
and the sketch sitcom just doesn't work for me, you get an awkward mix of scenes where a joke isn't a hugley funny punchline like in a real sketch show, but you still have the short snappy feel that stops any character development.
MikeP
What I meant was that Mark Heaps character was basically just a silly voice (which sounded like Brian wink.gif ) and nasty mannerisms. There was no depth to his character.

One of Green Wing's biggest flaws was that none of it's characters were well written, excpet for perhaps Marty (was it? The weedy one).

Anyway, UNS has argued the case far better than I ever will so I'll just go...
fear_of_pop
I watched the whole series and found that there was depth to most of the characters, if you watched enough to find out.

But I wouldn't compare Green Wing to Spaced, they are completely different.
Chapman Baxter
I thought it was possibly the funniest and most original sitcom since Spaced. As far as I was concerned the characters were were drawn, and I did think they developed over the series. Obviously one man's meat is another man's poison.

As for the mean-spirited and cruel humour, I must admit that it existed, though I don't think it dominated the show. And actually that's probably the element that made me laugh more than any other. But then I'm probably a bad person.
The Mekon
As long as Twat Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps doesn't get any awards, I'll be a happy man. Jeez, that show is so mind-boggling BAD, it tries too hard to be a 'teenage' Coupling and fails on it's poo-stained arse.
ally
hey did anyone else see the countdown to the awards that were on telly tonight (as in tuesday)?

Simon Pegg gave a very brief interview with jon culshaw abt SotD. and mark heap was also on it briefly but talkin abt green wing.

why did no one know that Simon and Mark were gonna be on telly albeit not for very long!!
Stella MM
That was a rubbish show. Jon Culshaw can do as many Trevor McDonald impressions as he likes, it won't make him a good interviewer.

"Are you pleased to be nominated?" Well, they're hardly going to say "No, cos this whole shebang is cleverly engineered to get as many ITV shows in the running as possible and anyway, it's all academic as those undeserving feckers from Little Britain will sweep the board".

I did love watching the interview with Mark and Pippa Haywood from Green Wing though. She was trying really hard not to piss herself throughout the whole thing.
Astrid
I'm not a huge Ricky G fan so I am hoping that someone else wins for a change. I'm just really keeping my fingers crossed for Simon and Edgar.
biggrin.gif
Stella MM
I really really want Nighty Night to win its categories as it beats all the rest of the ITV1 crap hands down. I'm sure Little Britain will win everything going which is a shame. It does make me laugh but it's essentially just repetitive catchphrase humour and unless they pull something radical out of their arses it's going to get unbelieveably boring.
Astrid
I've warmed to LB over the last months so I won't mind if they win as long as RG doesn't. Have my fingers crossed for Nighty Night also. So funny. biggrin.gif

wherearethezombies
It was a funny show, everyone seems to love pegg. Ricky Gervais' speech was good, little prejudice against disabled people but funny none the less. loved the one tel thing too. Would have loved to have heard Pegg's speech but oh well. Little britain in no way deserves so much praise, nevermind eh, next time.

School of Rock?

SCHOOL OF FUCKING ROCK??!

School of fucking bollocks, more like.
cky2k
Sorry if anyone dissagrees but i thought school of rock sucked and shrek 2 wasnt great either SotD should have won.
stephenjwz
What a joke...
A) Shaun was the only british film of 3 and IT DIDN'T WIN, not to mention that School of Rock wasn't even a good Jack Black film and Shrek 2 was pointless.
B) The quality of the other nominations - shows that are on BBC3 or ITV2 (or ITV1 for that matter) FOR A REASON - the vast majority of which nobody watch and nobody should watch. The Office being nominated more than once, despite only 2 new episodes being on our screens since the last awards.
C) Little Britain winning most of it; its an OK show but its far from groundbreaking, just the best of a very bad bunch. Walliams and Lucas deserve recognition but they can, have and will do better.

All in all tonight I realised what a state british comedy outside the spaced-related shows is, and how little the view of the judges relates to the opinion of the public.

And yes, I did sign up just now because this was the only place I could think of to have my rant.
pots
welcome to the forum, the ideal place to rant.

there already messages of condolence and quiet rage on two comedy awards threads

[ edit - oh, you've moved it. ]

...and I've just merged the two. Hello stephen, many of us here feel your pain.

Although the Mighty Boosh should have won something. In fact quite a few shows which showed first on BBC3 won things but then they were always destined for BBC2 showing in the end so perhaps that doesn't count. Ah well. I still want to know who votes for these things.

ROBBED ROBBED ROBBED ROBBED ROBBED.
ANyone want to join me in hunting down the committee that thought that a KIDDIES film was funnier than Shaun and killing them in slow painful ways. Fecking IDIOTS.
williambuckrogers
lordie. it was just a silly little award for a set of good but not outstanding movies.

presumably we're not all actually personally upset and bereaved by this event, seeking vengeance and justice against something which doesnt actually matter!

Not I was taking the p***

should have said, i wasnt singling your post out astrid - it was a very general point about fandom and the way it causes some people to extend the bounds of their realities in quite unhealthy ways...

if a hit squad is what you want to happen, then organise your hit squad, dont let me stop you! wink.gif

I was a bit shocked at School Of Rock winning. I thought it would be Shrek 2 for sure, but it was good to see the support of the other guests at the awards for Simon and the film.

It doesn't matter that they didn't win the award, they've already won a few others for the film, and the fact that it's been a success in the UK and in the States should be an award in it's self.

We should be proud that a small British film has done so well against all those big American blockbuster types.

smile.gif
Astrid
I'm sure they aren't bothered.
The bucket loads of cash and the funding to make another movie will cheer them up! hee hee hee

I'll just get some playing cards and set it in resin and send it though the post saying there was a mistake and they actualy did win. biggrin.gif
