British Films Snubbed

"BRITAIN’S top film industry professionals have delivered a snub to their compatriots in the early round of voting for the Bafta awards.

A number of British films from the past year have failed to make even “longlists” of 15 top contenders for each of the categories of best film, director or performer.

A leaked copy of the lists shows that American imports such as The Aviator, the story of the billionaire Howard Hughes starring Leonardo DiCaprio, dominate the nominations. But there is no place for home-produced films such as Shaun of the Dead, My Summer of Love, Dear Frankie, Vanity Fair, Phantom of the Opera and Stage Beauty in these categories. "

Can`t say I`m suprised, but if we`re being brutally honest, apart from SoTD, weren`t all those other British films turkeys?

And is Phantom British? I thought seeing as Schumacher was directing (that`s what he calls it, anyway) it would be considered a US film?

we can't really blame people for voting the way they do. isn't it a matter of subjective opinion? it does seem a shame that some excellent films, be them british or otherwise, we be overlooked however that seems part of the nature of award ceremonies.

personally, i'd rather have people vote for the films they think deserve it than be motivated by some patriotic stirings.

in passing, i don't see any reason to consider those other british films as turkeys.

Its rare that I can put British films in my favourite films of the year suggestions, but this year, Dead Man's Shoes and Shaun of the Dead were excellent, so to see them go unrecongised is a shame.

I wouldn't mind so much if it wasn't for the fact that films which should never be considered for any Best Picture category are in the running. I of course refer to popular blockbuster trash like Shrek 2 and Harry Potter - what the hell are they doing there?! huh.gif

I wouldn't say they were turkeys. They were all quite small films with limited distribution and runs so they wouldn't have been expected to make much money, Vanity Fair and Phantom of the Opera excepted.

I suppose you're right, but doesn't it seem silly that the BRITISH film awards are being swamped by American work? It's not as if no quality British films have been made this year, is it?

Let's see if they do what they did the last 2 years and give nominations to films that are not even released here when nominations announced! Firstly they bring the awards to precede the Oscars...then they and try and mirror their nominations.

Not surprised SOTD isnt in there...seen more as entertainment than "art"...but in with a good chance of the public vote...oh wait kids have phiones now..Shrek 2 will win

BAFTA usually good with foreign nominations...hoping for Oldboy, Infernal Affairs, Flying Daggers and Hero to get a nod
