David Duchovny
says he and Chris Carter want to start filming a second X-Files film by the end of the year. Gillian Anderson has not yet signed up.
If it goes ahead, it looks like the film will have a stand-alone one-off plot, rather than delve in to the immensely convoluted 'mythology' of later series. I for one would be glad of that, since I became very bored by the show towards the end of its life.

I agree Chapman. I was a huge fan of the show over 5 series, then bizarre programming and personal circumstances meant my viewing of series 6 through to the final season was patchy.
This wasn't helped by the ever-convoluted mythology, which lost credibility. Arc stories can be fantastically involving and interesting, but carried on for too long can lose their drive and focus. The X Files mythology appeared at times to be being made up as Carter went along. I personally didn't like the attempt to tie every single piece together. This meant there were little green men, shapeshifters, bounty hunters, abductions, pregnancies, conspiracies, Samantha Mulder - all made to relate to each other in far-fetched ways.
The stand alones tended therefore to be the more enjoyable episodes, with wit, irony and post-modernism, although the later monster-of-the-week stories were sometimes naff.
I did enjoy the movie version though, and it would be nice to see Mulder and Scully back together, after the on-off appearences of the final few seasons.

Best episodes of the X-files were definitely those stand alone twilight zone esque stories.
My favourites
Darkness Falls - Flesh eating insects which attack in the dark and scared the crap and of me and which is very similar to Pitch Black *coughs* rip off *coughs*
Humbug - The genius freak show episode, by far the funniest ever episode.
Home - Family of inbreds where the mother is under the bed...
Folie a Deux - The where a man thinks his boss is a monster turning his co-workers into zombies, but you have to believe it to see it.
At least those are the ones that stick in my head. Well I've discussed the X-Files on the internet, there is now no question of my geekiness.
Starscream`s Ghost
Jan 19 2005, 03:03 PM
Hmm...
"Tooms" - by far the best in my book, and one of the greatest bad guys to ever grace a screen.
"F. Emasculata" - the grossest thing you`ll ever see, insects bursting out of sores in people`s skin.
"Dark Matter"? (I think) - Tony Shaloub is the scientist who`s shadow turns into a black hole, sucking his friends and family in.
They`re my favourites, anyway.

All great I agree.
I forget how many wonderful episodes there were and how much I loved it (and particularly Mr. Duchovny) may be time for a DVD purchase.

Just a damn shame they gotted bogged down with mythology, because that`s when I switched off, it just seemed over-indulgent to me, and I got bored.

ok not a massive x-files fan ( saw the first coupla series on and off and enjoyed them but it went on a bit ) but i watched zoolander the other day and saw david duchovny in it.
the film was shite but he was brilliant - i reckon he's a great comic actor, as proved by the larry sanders show. would love to see him in more dry comic roles.

"Soft Light", it was called, Starscream. A good episode, featuring some of Mark Snow's best work.
My standalone favourites would be;
"Small Potatoes" - shapeshifting guy with a tail played by x files writer Darin Morgan
"Irresistable" Nick Chinlund plays hair- and nail-collecting guy
"Post Modern Prometheus" - Cher-loving mutant guy
"Squeeze" - first apperance of Eugene Victor Tooms

I used to be a big X files fan. David Duchovny and crazy shit. Twas my dream combination. But I lost interest around series 6.
I too love
Humbug (Darin Morgan did the best episodes)
Small Potatoes,
Squeeze & Tooms,
DPO,
War of the Coprophages,
How the ghosts stole Christmas
And the one about the angel-girls with six fingers.
By the way, I love the fact that this thread exists with this title.
EDIT: Just realised that I was wrong there. I missed practically all of season 5 and then only caught a few of the episodes in seasons 6 and 7. Didn't bother past there.

Anyhooo - Finally got around to getting DVDs of Season 3 of X-files - years since i saw the eps but it is still bloooming fabulous. It has aged well (hasn't aged that much actually) and i am throughly enjoying what i have seen so far. Clyde Bruckman epsiode being one standout piece. some duds though but over-all - fabby fabby fabby! And it even has minor guest roles for pre-famous Ryan Reynolds and Lucy Liu!!
Pity Chris Carter ended up fannying about like a mungbean and spoiling it all.
Just thought i'd say ...

I used to love the X-Files, I got the magazine and everything, had some fairly good comic work in it too. The comic book adaptation of 'Ice' i think it was called was really well drawn. The story was a kind of remake of the Thing. I've still got all my X-Files magazines on my bookshelf, might have to look back through them now. Got a couple of graphic novels too. Some of the stand alone comic book stories were very good if i remember - Firebird was part of a good story which I ended up getting the graphic novel of.

Adda girl!!! See Zoe understands the compelling sexmo of Foxy Mulder. I still bloody would - even though Duchovny is possibly an arse and he married a no-lipped twiglet. but Krycek is my bad babylove. His eyes are too far apart and he only has one arm and the actor is possibly gay but no matter. he can butter my muffin any day. Damn you Marita!!! Although the ill-advised floppy haired Melissa section is perhaps something i like to forget. I'm thinking last bits of Piper maru - "like a new man" *snooch!*

I'm not sure what the point of another movie would be. I love the characters and the majority of the 900 seasons, but there was a great deal of flogging the equine cadaver towards the end, and I don't want the memories to diminish with a crap film.

I dunno - i think they just got fed up of each other. Duchovny although TEH SEKZZ is maybe an arse in real life (from what i'v heard) but also - i have heard Gillian is lovely (i know someone who met her) but very 'actressy'. Both a pair of prima-donnas really who irritated each other at times. But then again, the way they shafted the show, no wonder things got tense. All kinds of factors methinks.
I HATE the whole 'Scully hearts Mulder' plot cos that makes a show go downhill. Like they did with Moonlighting and Avengers - platonic characters go all in love is usually a death knell. Why they do it? Erm - not enough well-rounded supporting characters to provide meaningful relationships with and lack of plot avenues left??? I liked the tension and the 'but will they?' atmosphere rather than the 'i love you bayyyybeeee' plots. Maybe that is just me.

Gillian Anderson became pissed off because Duchovny was being paid more than her. Duchovny became pissed off because he didn't want to film in Vancouver, then wanted more money once they relocated to LA. I hate it when external problems affect a show. It always leaves you wondering about what could have been. If Duchovny hadn't been written out, the final seasons may have been better. Like when Babylon 5 was cancelled after four seasons then renewed after JMS had wrapped up all the interesting plot threads, leaving a shitty season five. *sigh*

YEah this is true ... seems XFiles was set with probs of such nature.
Funny cos as a former resident if Vancouver it is weird to see the place feature as 'Virginia' and even Russia or the like. It all looks like vancouver - esp when they film in Gastown or somewhere distinctive.

Those pre-LA episodes (the first four seasons in other words) have a lovely atmosphere to them, due in part to the location filming. Those rain-soaked highways bordered by dense pine forests had a claustrophobic, slightly threatening beauty which enhanced the fish-out-of-water situation agents Mulder and Scully found themselves in each week. After the move to LA, suddenly they were surrounded by bright sunlight, parched sandy landscapes, and in-bred hillbillies under the bed. There are still some brilliant episodes after that point, but you have to agree that seasons 1-4 are the most 'classic' of all the series.

I agree - i love the Vancouver episodes most of all. When i think of Xfiles, i think of those things you say - the rainy grey skies and green forests and that.
LA was really really different . Some good episodes yes but I know what you mean. The atmosphere changed and it was noticeable.
But then Xfiles post Mulder for me NEVER was as good. Season 6 onwards it went a bit wonky really. Such a shame.
