Full Version: Best Picture (as voted by the Spaced Out Academy)

Zoe
I tried to include the most popular choices from peoples top tens. I'm sure there are some glaring omissions, but hey that's what the 'other' button's for.

Let's find the definitive best film of 2004, since we clearly have the best taste on the net.
Jon 79
I voted for Lost in Translation.
I've not seen all the movies on the list, but SOTD would come joint 2nd(with KB2) in my list.
Stella MM
I'm afraid I voted for Shaun, which is a bit boring and sycophantic of me but still...

I loved a lot of the films on the list like Eternal Sunshine, Lost in Translation and Hero but nothing else has come close to tickling me quite as much as Shaun did.
fear_of_pop
Station Agent's fantastic, but I voted for Shaun too.
Zoe
I hope the academy aren't being influenced by the website we're on...

This is purely on cinematic merit.

Not the Shaun doesn't deserve the votes mind!
fear_of_pop
heh. biggrin.gif

I just voted on which one I enjoyed most. (and which I've watched over and over and over again since)
Sostie
It had to be OLD BOY...it blew me away just slightly more than Hero & Infernal Affairs. All on the list seem worthy eniugh (except Shrek 2)
Baz
Hmm, far to hard to pick. I'll have to have a think about this one.
Starscream`s Ghost
I`ve gone all fanboy, and voted Spider-Man 2. Sorry to all the Shaun fans, but as much as I love SotD, I loved SM2 even more, after all, I`ve dreamed of seeing Doc Ock on the big screen for nigh on 20 years, so to finally see it (and see it done so bloody well) was the treat of the year for me.

You're right Shrek 2 is shit, but a lot of people liked it so I thought I'd whack it in there. It was quite tough to compile a short list.
Baz
I liked Shrek 2. I thought it as just as funny as the 1st one.
Zoe
There we go, not to everyone's tastes but a lot of people really liked it and it was well received critically (generally) so it's on the list.
Jubei
Well, I was a little surprised to see it on there, pleasantly so, and I voted for Infernal Affairs. I hear its being remade by Scorscese but I think Michael Mann would do a much better job tongue.gif
Chapman Baxter
Dear me, I've only seen six of these. I'm clearly not keeping up with my cinema-going.

Anyway, from those I have seen Shaun wins easily.
Zoe
It's interesting so far. I was expecting more of a Shaun landslide, nice to see some variety in the choices.

Oooh and I forgot to say I voted for 'Dogville'.
Lazlo Woodbine
I can't decide! Um...I'll go for.......

Dogville. Though i may regret it later.
Zoe
Good man!

The best film of the year has one more vote - so I'm guessing you have impeccable taste!

Impeccable is the perfect word to describe my taste. smile.gif
superfurryandy
Well, I stayed true to my previous choice in this sort of poll and went for Lost in Translation, but really, it could have been SOTD, The Station Agent or Eternal Sunshine as well.
beatoswald
i'll vote 'my summer of love'.
pots
lost in translation for me.
wherearethespoons
I voted for Eternal Sunshine. If it was 'Worst Picture' Lost in Translation would win hands down.
Baz
It's between Eternal Sunshine, Bubba Ho-Tep and Shaun for me, but as much as I wanted to go for Bubba Ho-Tep, I'm gonna go for Eternal Sunshine as it holds up better as a whole.

Dagnammit, that was so nearly on the list - but I put Shrek 2 on instead. What was I thinking, who's going to vote for Shrek 2 as film of the year?

I'm dissapointed with my list that someone had to put 'other', boo.
spookytwigg
It was STUPIDLY close for me... but I chose Garden State over Shaun in the end...

Then again I only saw like 7 or 8 new films last year... which is quite disapointing really tongue.gif I must strive to do better this year!
Kick in the Head
I voted for Lost in Translation because, as much as I loved Shaun, it feels like a souvenir of my experiences in Japan last summer. I had seen it before I went, but when I saw it again when I came back, it captured Tokyo perfectly, and really got into my head. Beautiful...
Raven
I've not seen many of those listed but of the ones I have I'd have to go for Spider-man 2.
Justincredible
i keep wondering... WHY do people keep putting Lost In Translation for this year!?!?! It came out LAST year! It was even up for best picture LAST year! Take it off! take it off! (besides i hate that movie, haha)

This poll refers to the best films of 2004, and Lost in Translation was released in the UK in January 2004 - I think it was actually the first week. So, from a US perspective, yes, you're right. As with all polls and awards its always contentious what the deadline is. BAFTA have films nominated that haven't been released in the UK, and Vera Drake seems to be on every critic's best of 2004 list even though it wasn't released in the UK until this year...

For favorite film of 2004, it's Shaun in a landslide. No arguments there. wink.gif

From a Yank perspective, if we're talking realistically what might pick up the Best Picture (I think our UK friends will get it this year, correct?) - I just saw Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby yesterday and I'll be extremely fucked off if it doesn't win the Oscar. Completely, utterly, totally DESTROYED me. It's just unreal. Genius.

Supah high marks for Eternal Sunshine and The Incredibles, too...

Really? I thought the first one was shit.
My favourite film of last year was probably The Incredibles, but I couldn't be certain.
