It takes a loooong time, but it did finally load.

Can't stop saying "meh" now, though, it's very worrying...

It's certainly a 'teaser', I think I like what I see but I need more. Like the Marlon Brando voiceover.

Meh.

What's the point of this film? What will be new about the Superman legend we haven't seen already?

The best thing is the John Williams references in the music.
WiseJoeyD
Thought it was brilliant.

Seen on other boards criticising it for not showing enough; no dears, taht'd be, what they call, "the film", which so happens not to be finished yet(!)

The Smallville bits were particularly nice (tuts as I remember Lana Lang corrupting the series) and it might be a more "oh, get him" movie; as in one that makes us see him working out his role of saviour of earth (or just Metropolis!) and witness the angst, the angst!

Looking forward to it immensly though, and I hope they keep Margot Kidder off it, if only to spare the eyesight of audiences....(!)

PS Never seen the first 2 all the way through, but Marlon Brando's performance sounded amazing, especially from a guy reading cue cards!

There are some answers to that kicking around but I considered them to be quite annoying spoilers when I heard them so I'm not going to post them. I will say this though. Basically the movie is about Superman's return to earth after a pretty lengthy absence and his reintegration into a world that has been getting along without him both as a superhero and with his mates and that. I think the story intends to address the question 'does the world need a Superman?' as much as it's going to have to address the question 'does the world need another Superman movie?'

Aw... fuckbeans!

I think it's an anti-grower.... watching it again (200+ much?!) it's slightly less "wowser" than when I first watched it but I still love the Saviour like quality to seeing Superman rise up above the clouds, across the sun.

It's also looking like a great idea showing him in space listening in on the troubles of the world... or..

[Rustle]
Supes: Hmm.. sounds like a 34DD bra being slipped off

Okay, at least it has a point then. By the look of the trailer it's just another origin movie. But I like the idea of exploring the 'need for a Superman', and I'm sure it will be handled well in Singer's hands. That aspect of the Superman legend has been sadly neglected throughout his movie and televisual incarnations, and so it will hopefully remedy that in an intelligent, sensitive way.
WiseJoeyD
One thing I liked in Smallville, but since I'm that scourge of Superman fandom- a viewer of only the TV show!- I'll probably be hounded about it:

- they introduced a brilliant reason for Lex's hate/(love? read in some comics he's almost disappointed he no longer has a 'sparring partner' when Supereman 'dies')

In Summary: That Superman is Numan, an entity of almost unlimited power who has come to Earth, and Sageeth, an ordinary man who fights this menace, should he ever grow too powerful and consume mankind.

Better than "You made me have a combover Supes!".

Jessop: (my god. A day for agreeing!) I agree wholeheartedly that I've certainly never seen the issue of whether they need Superman. unlike Batman, it doens't seem like the world's this awful cesspit in need of redemption.

Should be interesting.

I think Batman is a whole other kettle of fish. His purpose is more personal and revenge-motivated, whereas Superman has a more Jesus-like saviour quality. For me, that makes Superman less identifiable, which is why I'm intrigued at the new movie - providing, of course, that it actually delivers - which appears to be more thought-provoking and humanising towards the character.

Wait, Commissioner Gordon?! Is Lex?!

I loved Superman's origin story on and off screen (didn't it thrash around for a while and now there's a line of contiuity-shirking comics from the makers of Smallville?) and basically wished in some way you could meld that with Batman's more grounded 'powers'!

I admit I'm probably not a true Superman fan if I don't like when the writers up his powers to sometimes ridiculous levels (planet mover etc).

But anywho, liking the device of having him return to earth in a crystalline-lifeboat and forgetting about Superman 3 and 4.

Whups!

Apologies. On BlueTights.com (hmmm) a video diary gave a glimpse of Kevin Spacey in character.

Thankfully it really didn't recall the very shaggadelic Goldmember appearance and could be great.

I still admire the way Michael Rosenbaum has played Lex.

Shame the writers' have undermined their/his good work but he is really good, with just the right amount of camp melodrama (understated of course, which makes it all the more brilliant when you watch him in a scene in Smallville slip a quiet "fuck you" to the director/writer for the awful scene)

eg: He did *3* turn walk away, turn back in a scene, each one more laboured and hilarious looking. But only if you watch closely....

Mmmmm

Dean Cain?!

By the way what was the fuss with Margot Kidder's protrayl of Lois Lane? Some people were saying in the comics she's more forthright and go getting, which, er, I thought she was?!

Smallville's (unneccessary) Lois actually grows when she's not just ratings grabbing (ie only recently has she seemed to have settled down into head strong mode).

It's a pity the makers of Smallville don't commit to Series 3-esque mythos. People complained (!) though and they dumbed down for Series4.
Methinks with the new movie they'll get their arses in gear...

Birthright!

Remembered the name of the one I *think* Miles Millar and Al gough are behind(?)

Are there any superman comics that are Batman:Year One in their standing? Like, really bloody good ones?

[I admit I am comic-n0o0o0b and apologise, but if anyone has any suggestions?]

Not that up on the Superman back catalogue but I really enjoyed A Superman For All Seasons by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale.

From Dark Horizons:

Superman Bulge Causes Headaches:

There's always great cinematic urban legends that swirl around in regards to actor vanities and more especially, male endowments. Last year saw Colin Farrell get in a hub-bub over his cut scene from "A Home at the End of the World", this year came issues of Ioan Gruffudd's package in "Fantastic Four", and now next year's "Superman Returns" has gotten its own trash tale.

UK tabloid The Sun reports that the size of 26-year-old Brandon Routh's bulge in the superhero's skintight costume could be distracting enough that the studio has ordered the makers to cover it up with digital effects. Their source says "It's a major issue for the studio. Brandon is extremely well endowed and they don't want it up on the big screen. We may be forced to erase his package with digital effects".

Speaking with the costume designers earlier this year, they told us that whilst the bulge indeed was the most complicated issue in terms of the costuming, they worked out a practical solution involving a codpiece and special padding which ultimately negates the issue. Thus any stories of costly digital manipulation are as fake as those CG-enhanced Kevin Costner hair in "Waterworld" urban legends.

I bet the Sun was loving it when they CGI'd Angelina Jolie's boobs in Tomb Raider...

It's gonna be hard to have Supes in tights without some gratutuatous package shots...

Won't be as bad as the Batbutt shot at the beginning of Batman Forever!

Absolutely! There wouldn't be any purpose to the Ultimates comics if every other pannel didn't feature an examination of how Cap'n America was smuggling a medium sized tortoise in his cod piece.Super herosare huge genitals.Thats their reason to be.

On the subject of 1990's superman, I had my only brief daliance with this character leading up to his "death" in 1994. I thought that these comics were pretty good as was his inevitable return in Action Comics 500. However all that is worst in super hero comic books followed this. There was "the reign of the super men" in which four possible new super men were posited. One cloned super boy, one with out a code against killing, one who was a cyborg around the old supes remains, and one who was a black guy in a big steel suit who was the only one to maintain supes's original ethics.and who do you think the real superman turned out to be? None of them; its just some other guy who turns up at the end, like the old superman but with a slightly bigger quiff. Oh, and guess what? the one who looks evil and scary? the cyborg? he is actually evil and scary, just like you might have thought if you were a four year old.

I stopped reading them after that.

THE SUPERMAN INFLATO-SUIT (for children of all ages)

QUOTE
Just in time for this summer's Warner Bros. blockbuster, Superman Returns, Mattel gives kids the chance to imagine that they have the strength, the power ... and the physique of the Man of Steel™. A dedicated battery-operated fan inflates the Superman™ suit, transforming kids into their favorite superhero, all muscle-bound and awe-inspiring.

For me this ranks almost up thier with the vibrating Harry Potter broomstick.

A big "Ditto" from me
Sean of the Dead
Spacey as Luther I like, I'm also getting used to Routh as Supes, but the whole thing just screams 'meh' so far.
Sir_Robin_the_brave
Looks alright to me, but we shall see. I'll certainly be going to see it in the cinema even if it does turn out to be so-so.
maian
I'm fairly excited about it based on the fact that Singer is involved. I love the X-Men films he made and if he's passionate about Superman then I can get behind that. I reckon this will be enjoyable, but Superman always struck me as a bit to square-jawed a character to make a decent film out of. Not enough angst or issues to affect him.
