I can't get the fucker to work.
*Edit*
Got it working now. Okay, I'll admit it. I'm looking forward to this. A lot. Routh looks to be good as both Clark and Superman, which always seemed to be the hard thing to pull off, and the whole returning to Earth after an abscence plot thing could have some serious legs to it. The only thing is that I see a bald Kevin Spacey and I think of his brief turn as Doctor Evil in Austinpussy at the beginning of GoldMember...

Due to the revived discussion in The Last Film You Watched I though I'd bump this one.
Is anyone else really glad that Kevin Smith and JJ Abrams have not been able to write the new film as they might have done had things turned out differently? As much as I like their stuff I don't think that Smith's style of writing would really gel with Superman (I can't say so for certain but I'm fairly sure that it would have been an odd film) and I am very glad that all that polar bear/giant spider stuff has now disappeared.
Similarly, I am very glad that Abrams' version did not get made because, based on what I have heard about his script, it would have been too over-the-top and non-sensical. All the stuff about Supes dying and coming back and Luthor having super powers as well was just a bit too much (assuming that is all true and his sscript really was that insane) and Superman films work best with a distinct story. They can have a fair few things going on but not a lot of pointless twists that would piss everyone off. Lots of twists works very well in Lost because they can unveil them over several years, but try and cram it into 2 hours and people will just deride the film for it.
This is one of the main reasons why I'm very worried about Abrams taking over the next Star Trek film; if he sticks to a simple story it'll almost certainly be great, but if he keeps throwing in crazy ideas and twists then it'll just be a mess.

I loved it especially the first third which I'll wrap in a big long sentence:
Starts off with Bog standard 'cannae beat it' Superman theme tune, slips into some Wild West Start, flippant soft growing-up fun in the ET stylee and gets abit Army/Predator/Lost Melody (Star 45)
It gets very melodic after that and has lots of 'moments' written in but all very nice and good. Quite relaxing really.
I'll probably listen to this all day now, cheers Ade!

Yeah, see that's what I mean - I'm going to see it. I just wish I was more jacked about it than I am. (That first teaser, I will admit, was pretty fantastic. Put a lump in my throat. The full trailer had some bits that were "wow!" and others that were "meh")

The only thing I'm slughtly "meh" about,is the fact that most plot lines involving supes being hurt/defeated involve kryptonite(excepting the death of Superman with Doomsday),it's a bit of a stale plot device.
Still looks cool though.

Hmmm....okaaaay, how to say without giving away anything that might surprise.

It is very, very good. As good as I know Singer's capable of, yet it could have been even better - it's just shy of greatness. There are some extremely wise decisions w/ regard to style and content that set the tone of the thing at a level that quickly grasps the audience's sentiments, yet he also leaves his own stylistic stamp on it. Bold storyline choices, as well, that are bound to piss some people off but I was fine with them.
Brandon Routh acquits himself very well, given that he's basically being instructed to emulate Chris Reeve on nearly every level; he's funny and he's got a great presence, if not the same kind of gravitas that Reeve commanded. Spacey is note-perfect some times, waaaay too hammy others, but I guess he's allowed to be. (How else are you going to compete with Hackman?) Parker Posey steals every scene she's in. Was ultimately underwhelmed by Kate Bosworth - she's fine, really, she just doesn't really feel like the Lois Lane of yore in light of the evocative way they've got Routh playing the part. She's lacking a certain, oh I dunno....what is it, sass? I think it's sass. And spark. I would have loved to see what someone like Zooey Deschanel would have done with the part.
Anyway, overall a very pleasant experience. Given that I wasn't actively looking forward to it, I had a great time. And now I'll shut up till more have seen.

As a result of watching the original superman movie on Sky the other day, me and my freinds were discussing if 'infinite speed' as supermans dad (cant remember the names) says that he will be capable of, as he is travelling off to earth.
Anyway, this is probably going to be a really boring post, so skip it. But if anyone knows much about physics, then help us out.
What it was, was my freind whos studying engineering of some sort at university, and did a level physics, says that if superman, or anything could do infinite speed, then by the equation E=MC2, then it would have to have infinite mass (I dont really understand the equation to that level to know whether it means that or doesnt), and thus if infinite speed was acheived (even though it cant be, as infinity is no single number) then due to infinite mass, it would destroy the universe.
So he used the speed of light as an example, as the limit of infinity (which destroys the point) but I think he meant the speed of light would be the limit before infinity. And then the conversation ended as another freind was getting fed up after someone brought up time as being an abstract concept.
Anyway, does would E=MC2 mean that if someone was doing infinite speed, it would create an infinite mass proportionate to the actual speed defined by infinity?
ronlogan1977
Jun 30 2006, 06:39 AM
You`ve got the basic grasp.
The Speed of Light can be approached but not broken as the nearer the to the speed of light a particle gets, the heavier the mass of the object. It would take infinite energy to break the speed of light ,c .
However, as always with Quantum mechanics that is not the whole story.
Tachyons are particles that have been proposed (but not observed) that may break the Light Barrier.
Theree have been other experiments performed with Ceasium lasers, concerned with faster than light particles.
And as for Special Relativity and the like. Aargh.
NiteFall
Jun 30 2006, 12:02 PM
See, the problem with detecting tachyons is that everything you use to detect them runs (at top speed) at light speed. So by the time you might have detected it, it's gone. Bit of a bummer really.
