Well Bryan Singer's directing which can only be a good thing after the fine job he did with X-men; but what do we think about the cast
Kate Bosworth .... Lois Lane
Hugh Laurie .... Perry White
James Marsden .... Richard White
Brandon Routh .... Superman/Clark Kent
Kevin Spacey .... Lex Luthor
Hugh Laurie?

Well Routh looks the part, and Spacey will be excellent in a charismatic villian role. I just hope the film brings something new to the Superman myth. It gets a little boring seeing the same characters in different incarnations, and I've really gone off Smallville - I used to like the tension caused by Lana and Clark's unrequited love, but now it's just irritating and repetitive.
Do you have any news on the possible plot or vision for the movie?
No not really, only speculation.
I'm quite surprised about Bosworth as Lois, I'm not sure I can see that working at all. Then again maybe it's just because she's blonde and I have no vision.
The consensus seems to be reflected in these plot outlines from the IMDB
In this semi-sequel to the first two "Superman" films, the classic hero returns to Earth after having been missing for six long years. What he finds astounds him - the world he knew has changed for the worse. In his absence, the forces of evil have regrouped like never before. Even Lex Luthor, once an outcast, has risen to the heights of power in Metropolis. And when an old enemy from Krypton reappears, Superman must fight his neverending battle like never before, amidst a world that has forgotten what it's like to have a hero.
Summary written by SR Hadden
The Galant Alien Hero known to the world as Superman has been missing for six years. Something happened six years ago when he gave up his powers for Lois Lane and then took them back to face the dastardly General Zod. Now people, in his absense, begin wondering if they'd have been better off if he'd never existed at all. Those thoughts are trampled when evil creeps back into Metropolis and the only one who can save them is their missing hero!
Summary written by Webathresh
Superman is blamed for the pain of the people and the destruction of Metropolis in the wake of the attacks by General Zod, Non, and Ursa. In response to his new unpopularity, he exiles himself in the Fortress of Solitude. Six years have passed, and a new threat emerges. Superman must leave his exile and battle the oncoming threat, as he is the only one who can. In this film, Superman Returns.

Kate Bosworth's always seemed a bit sickly sweet and willowy to me so I can't really see her as Lois Lane. Still, I suppose that's what acting's for, eh?
Who is this Routh character? And what happened to all those rumours about Jake Gyllenhaal playing the man with no underwear co-ordination? Bah.
Yeah, she's a bit slight, and Legolas has just dumped her - ha!
Anyways Supes looks like this and is a relative newcomer
I can also tell you he appears to have pink eye

Brian Singer should do a good job with this based on what I've seen him do with the X-Men. But DC Comics does not seem to do well with its film conversions. Look at the way the Batman franchise went. This years Batman Begins looks like it could be a return to form but other than that what track record does DC/WB have. Batman 3 & 4, Superman 3 & 4, Catwoman, Constantine. These films have not gone down well with the general audience. So far only the Hulk has failed for Marvel in recent years.
I fell it was a mistake not to spin off Smallville onto the big screen, imagine the end of that show being Clarke revealing the Superman Logo on his shirt for the first time as the end credits start and the beginning of the big screen version following on from that point.
I did have the chance to read the Kevin Smith script a while ago, and that would have made a great movie, just not one for the people who only know Superman from his TV and feature appearances. As long as they can achieve something that feels like what happened in the 2 Spider-Man films and X-Men I'll be happy. If they can get it like the recent Animated show that would be better.
Here's Hoping.

Well the rumours of the plot seem to support one another, and it would also seem to be quite dark - lots of evil, a world without heroes, etc. Sounds like it has potential. And Singer is interested in metaphor too, so that bodes well for story.

Which is a vastly improved movie as a result. Still can't get past the inclusion of Evanescence though. Also, Daredevil, Elektra and The Punisher were never intended to break box office records, hence the much lower budgets. It's a smart move. Fanboys guarantee an audience of a certain size, plus the hardcore ones will see it several times and buy multiple DVD releases. I'd be shocked if they didn't make their money back.

Hugh Laurie's huge in the States at the moment. He's the lead character in this crime drama called "House". It's pretty big and getting bigger. It just seems wrong on so many levels to see Hugh Laurie:
(1) In a serious role
(2) Not stood next to Stephen Fry or Rowan Atkinson
(3) Speaking with an American accent*
But I think he's surprisingly good playing a moody old guy. Perhaps he'll do ok.

The new film is disappointing in not using any Smallville cast members. I admit to having worries about Tom Welling's acting ability
Casting Director: Well, we have a pine door who's nearly edging you out Tom....and a teenage girl. i won't lie. It's close
However watching Trasnference (which in the UK is on next week) shows he can pull off different characerts (or in this case does a fantastic impression of Lionel. PLus makes you reaslises how good he is at 'playing' a teenager)
It'd have been nice for someone like Chloe, or evev Martha and Jonathan to make a appearance in their smallville incarnation.
PS To the person who said about the ending of Smallville; Someone suggested a fantastic ending to Smallville involving Lex finally doing someting evil resulting in, say, a helicopter plunging towards a building...Clark runs through an alley ripping open his shirt in extreme close up to camera...Fade To Black. The End

Jonathan Kent is dead in the time frame from this film - which is supposed to be set after Superman One and Two - Not sure about Martha . . .
I'm pretty certain they mention her funeral in Soup's 3 but as that isn't supposed to have taken place in this movies time line she could still be alive.
Star of 'North by Northwest' Eva Marie Saint is playing Martha Kent.
Other newly listed cast members are:
Sam Huntington .... Jimmy Olsen
James Marsden .... Richard White
Noel Neill
Kal Penn .... Stanford

I guess the thinking there is that they want people who don't watch Smallville to go and see the movie and as they reckon the average movie goer is a moron putting Smallville actors in it will make Joe Dingbat think 'Oh, it's a Smallville movie, I don't watch that.' They may have a point.

I don't have a problem with there being no Smallville characters in the film, in fact I really hope it's completely different - I don't particularly want to spend an hour or two sat in the cinema watching a big screen version of Dawson's Creek - With Added Kryptonite!!

Oh......OHHH!!! FIGHT FIGHT!!
I'm sorry, but NONE calls Smallville Dawson's Creek!
(Well, not series 1-3 anyway; it's open season on 4...in the sense of "it's illegal but we're posh and special so we'll do it anyway")
I meant, I think, that one or two actors crossed over. Chloe perhaps etc. Not Lana (OH GOD! look, here's a recap on her character after series 2 - a fetishised everything-to-everyone goody goody who is basically post feminism in a frock talking down to Superman. for example, nearly every ep this series has her caustically saying "you were only good at keeping secrets". This forgetting his heroism etc etc and her to-ing and fro-ing. URGH!)
So, yes some characters, if not most, wouldn't trasnfer well, but it's be nice to have had one or two.
