Not necessarily sarcastic, but I'm not deadly serious either.
I mean, it would be an interesting exercise to see how much stuff out of so many hours of film would be essential to maintain a coherent narrative, while allowing for character devleopment and set-pieces. I mean, do we really need Frodo to say the ring's getting stronger and fall over so many times? Do we really need to see Sam and Gollum at loggerheads again and again? The whole of Helm's Deep could be removed, as its a mere scrap that ultimately proves nothing...
