Starscream`s Ghost
QUOTE (GundamGuy_UK @ Mar 10 2008, 01:52 PM)
True, but you always know Bond or whoever is going to live.

It'll add to the "I wonder how they'll get out of this one!" element, as they devise a clever and ridiculous scheme to beat whatever it is that's wrong.

"I know! We'll fly really fast round the Sun and go back in time!"

This is true, but it is pretty funny to know that they definitely will all survive.

This has got to be the worst bit of casting in a long time. Sorry empire, I subscribe to your mag and usually appreciate your views, but what is there to like about Simon Pegg, 'Spaced' was decidedly so,so, Shaun of the dead was average,Hot fuzz even more so. When is Hollywood going to recognise REAL British talent like Dominic West for example? It's the likes of Simon Pegg and Ricky Gervias sucking up to the likes of Robert DeNiro and Tom Cruise that makes me almost ashamed to be British. There...feel much better now.

Wow, that's the first time I've seen genuine Pegg-hatred! I can't fathom it. huh.gif

QUOTE
Fortunately, I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Pegg. on the set back in February. Watching him play the part of Scotty was a real gift and something that I will never forget. Simon says that he will play the part as a tribute to my Father and after seeing him in action, I must say that my Father would be proud to pass the torch to such a fine actor. Simon did a great job and we are honored that he is filling my father’s space boots.

PS You’re going to LOVE this movie!!!!

Aaaww! That's beautiful. wub.gif It gives me hope that this movie won't suck, & that Simon will prove himself to be very well suited to this role. cool.gif

Can't really think of anything really "stand out" that West has done... sure, Rock Star was a great film, but he wasn't exactly astounding in it... he did the job he was supposed to... Pegg on the other hand has co-written and starred in 2 of the most popular BRITISH movies in recent history... And I think he will work as Scotty, 'cause he really has respect for the character and actor that brought him to life.

Er, The Wire? One of the most critically acclaimed television shows of the last decade?

Edit: I'm not saying that Dominic West should be Scotty or anything, I'm just defending his work as a fine actor.

I do find it quite funny that they described him as being a real British talent when his best work to date has been performed with a faux-Baltimore accent.

Hey, there's one episode where he has to pretend to be British in order to infiltrate the Greek's brothel, so that sort of counts...

Yeah, but it's kind of like that bit in House where Hugh Laurie uses his real voice on the phone. Doesn't mean that the performance is ''British'', just that we're witnessing some sort of meta-accent.
Sean of the Dead
I like to see how the actor's actual accent is crowbarred into an episode, much like Bill Bailey's musical talents in Black Books.

I hadn't thought at all how Simon might be affected by the beast that is the Star Trek franchise:

QUOTE
I was slightly worried about tying myself into a franchise for nine years. It was obviously something to think about, but J.J. said, “If the worst thing that happens is we get to hang out every three years and have fun, what’s the problem?” I thought that was a great argument.

9 years! Ouch.

QUOTE (Raven @ Mar 26 2008, 01:42 PM)

While I'm sure Simon will play the part well and make it his own in the film, that does kind of highlight my initial iffiness in his being cast in this particular movie in such a high profile role at all. I just feel he's been cast for the kudos rather than purely to play Scotty, and you only cast for kudos if the script isn't quite strong enough to hold the film.

In a way it's flattering but it's still using Simon's name as a marketing tool for the film. Would there be as much publicity around it without Simon's involvement? Some, but not as much I reckon.

Probably because they tried to find examples of him doing a bad job in another role but, dammit, could only find perfection each time.

I seriously doubt Star Trek needs Simon's name attached to it to prove popular.

Note of Caution: George Clooney was complimentary about the role of Batman when he played it. Admiration for a part doesn't necessarily mean you'll be any good at it.

I'm sure he will be, but let's not judge anything until we've seen it.

Not Star Trek itself, but this film in particular.

I was talking about this film, it is called Star Trek.

Simon may be popular in the UK, and he may have a degree of popularity overseas as well, but he's not an A-list star and he's not been picked for this role because his name being attached to it will enhance the film's box office draw.

You've heard a lot about his involvement in the film because, I suspect, the web sites you visit feature a heavy "Simon" content, but if you look at the various Trek and movie sites around the net I think you'll find he's getting about the same amount of coverage as the rest of the cast and crew (I'll grant you that he may be getting a bit more coverage right now, because he has a new film out and he's talking to the media quite a bit, but he's far from being the biggest name on the cast list).

Personally, I still think it's an odd piece of casting. Because of the other roles I have seen him in, Simon isn't the first person I would have expected to be chosen to play Scotty, that's not because I don't think he can do it, it's because I just don't associate him with big Hollywood action movies (despite his appearance in MI:III).

I'm not sure how distracting his presence in the film will be for me, but then again I'm not sure how I'm going to react to any of the cast who are playing roles that have been made so iconic by other individuals.

I really do think this is Simon's biggest chance to-date, to prove his acting chops. (Although, when you think about his portrayal of Nicholas Angel, that was quite a departure from his usual comic roles.) After all, it's Simon's amazing ability to make a character totally believable that caught my attention in the first place. There have been other "questionable" casting choices in various films in the past that have proven to be brilliant. I have faith in our Mr Pegg. cool.gif

He's riffing on a point, tho - it's always funny how some of the peanut gallery whine that they haven't heard from a cast member yet, and then once that person has a film to promote suddenly it's "Him, again?!" Watch, it'll happen again at the end of this month when Harold & Kumar comes out and Cho starts talking. It'll be a Sulu deluge. (A Suluge, if you will...)

Well, I was a Star Wars fan, so I stayed on the other side of campus, in the campus pub, where the cool kids hung out. I didn't mingle with the trekkies.

As for the actual campus, it was built in 1957 -- so it's modern and very mod -- not terribly collegiate. It is a truly ugly school, but perfect for sci-fi. Although many things have been filmed there including the great HIDING OUT with Jon Cryer.

It's a classic because 1) that coogan kid is in it, and B) Jon Cryer's hair. Because the stripes make you so inconspicuous when you're hiding from the mob. C) filmed at CSUN the summer before I started there.
