By the way, it looks as though there is an interview with Simon in this month's Star Trek magazine (the US version anyway).
Is it online? If not, any chance of it being scanned by some lovely person? *flutters eyelashes*

That would mean someone would have to actually buy the Trek magazine! I haven't done that since I was, like, 14!

I believe they publish the same version in the UK, about a month or so after the US. It's been a while since I last bought the Star Trek magazine, there's not been much point when there's been no new content, but I'll see if I can lay my hands on a copy.
I suspect the information will be pretty much what has been linked to above (i.e. quotes and comments from his Run Fat Boy Run interviews).

Shouldn't this thread be in the Castwatch section?
Raven
Apr 21 2008, 11:38 AM
No, because it is a general thread about the film.
Obviously it is a little Simon heavy, especially at the moment, but at the same time it is not Simon exclusive.

With regards to them saying that Star Trek doesn't need to be in the title, I beg to differ really.
But then, they can't call it Star Trek 2, or XII (because this one isn't called XI and it'd make no sense). So calling it "Star Trek: Sequel Subtitle" is the only real option I think.
Still looking forward to Trek, but it's a very long way away yet.

They dropped Star Trek from Enterprise for the first two seasons, and then put it back in a futile attempt to stem falling viewing figures.
It would need to have Star Trek in the title.

When you have a long-standing premise for the franchise name being part of the title, it's not a good marketing strategy to drop it.

Yeah, the James Bond example was a bad comparison.
The thing about "The Dark Knight" is, that's what Batman is also known as. What's Star Trek also known as? You can't call it something related to Trek like "The Final Frontier", because it's been done too.
It's like saying you don't need "Star Wars" in the title of something.
maian
Jun 6 2008, 06:57 PM
But how many casual movie goers would know that The Dark Knight was another term for Batman, because that's who these films have to appeal to to be successful, you can only get so far on fans. If you can sell the film on it own merits and still let people know that it is a part of the franchise, you don't need to have the name of the franchise in the title.
Also, you don't really need 'Star Wars' in the title since, in my experience, no one refers to any film other than Star Wars as Star Wars. If someone asks me what my favourite film of all time is, I don't say 'Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back', I just say 'The Empire Strikes Back'. Sure, you need people to know that it's part of the brand, but if you can imprint the connection strongly enough, using the same characters or making sure that the marketing links it in to the mythos, the inclusion of the franchise name in the title is unnecessary.
dolfyn
Jun 7 2008, 03:00 AM
^
Star Wars is sort of an exception, though.
Everyone knows the names of those films!

But with something like
Trek, which has a more specific viewership, there have been so many movies in the series that the casual movie-goer may not know the names of all the films without the
Star Trek tag included.
Feel the love.

maian
Jun 7 2008, 08:00 AM
But my point is that you don't need the franchise title if the films they are attached to are strong enough and the brand identity is imprinted enough through the marketing. It can't be hard to show people that a film is a Star Trek film.

I got through the latest Leeds Alumni magazine yesterday and the 'Profile' page was of Chris Pine. Apparently he was there doing an exchange year of English there when I was a fresher. I wonder if we were ever in any of the same lectures.
