QUOTE (NiteFall @ May 18 2009, 12:36 PM)

It's actually all explained in the comic series that was published. Basically all of this takes place just after Star Trek: Nemesis. Spock is living on Romulus as the Vulcan ambassador, striving for reunification (as was shown in the TNG 2-parter called Reunification), LaForge has left Starfleet and is making a living designing ships (he made the one that old Spock takes back in time with him) and Nero's ship got all big and badass through Romulan experiments with Borg technology. Long story short, the Federation knew Romulus was going to be destroyed, Spock tried to help, but was held up by the Vulcan High Command, Nero mined the red stuff that they were going to use to stop Romulus being destroyed and when that failed he went a bit crazy and decided it was all Spock's fault, stole some top-secret Romulan military experiments from a space station and went back in time.
To which the question has to be asked,
rather than go on a killing spree a few hundred years ago, why not just pop back to last Thursday week and save Romulus?!

He couldn't control when he went back too. Wasn't the whole time travel thing a side effect of red matter black holes? Plus he was working class so obviously dumb and brutish.

Also another nice little throwback to the original series..
When Kirk and Sulu parachuted down to the drill/laser, the bloke with them who got cocky and snuffed it was in red suit!
Also, Pike's line points out that that guy was the Enterprise's chief engineer. Handy if gruesome way of getting him out of the way so they need a new one once Scotty turns up, I thought.

She's not a feminist. She's just someone with a steakhouse-style chip on her shoulder. One with waaaaaaaay too much free time on her hands.
And she's wrong, in any case. Uhura was pretty much the strongest crew member on that bridge.

May 29 2009, 06:31 PM
The article did make me think about something. Had Spock and Uhura already have a relationship before they set out on the Enterprise? Is that the reason Spock said he didn't want to appear to pick her out of favouritism? Because that's what I had thought.
I also used the term feminist because it's become a word that has lost a lot of meaning to the point of becoming ludicrous and is easy to make fun of. But I am glad that people are giving me attention.

I think she's slightly romanticised Uhura's character in the TV series too.
QUOTE (Nichelle Nichols)
I'd get the first draft, the white pages, and see what Uhura had to do this week, and maybe it was a halfway-decent scene or two, sometimes more, and then invariably the next draft would come in on blue pages and I'd find that Uhura's presence in the show had been cut way down. The pink pages came next and she'd suffer some more cuts, then the yellow, more cuts, and it finally got to the point where I had really had it. I mean I just decided that I don't even need to read the FUCKING SCRIPT! I mean I know how to say, "hailing frequencies open."

Yes, obviously. She's totally missed the point and twisted things to fit her interpretation, like nearly all Feminist criticism. This isn't limited to Feminist theory, I dislike most schools of criticism. Marxist Crit is equally tenuous. I'm only really interested in Authorship.

Isn't proclaiming to be a feminist a bit pointless, kind of like proclaiming to not be a murderer, it's just something you should be anyway, especially if you're a woman. It seems like a silly badge at times. Or am I just so enlightened that I miss how necessary it be?
One day it won't be necessary, but until then unfortunately it is.
As for proclaiming to be a feminist, yes it should go without saying, but for some young women it's still a dirty word. Anyone who thinks men and women should have equal rights is a feminist, and you'd hope that would be pretty much everyone.
This is what a feminist looks like.

Saw The Trek last night. Spock, Kirk and Bones were great. Peggster was funny but really could have worked on the character a bit more. If Chekov was obsessed by ships would he have "Wessel mania"?

Titan will be publishing an Art of book alongside the DVD release. Lots of art and photos and stuff that was kept under wraps pre-release, with an intro from JJ Abrams. Apparently, he saw our Watchmen companions and loved them so much he wanted a ST one for posterity (I don't know how much truth's in that, but it's a nice story).

I decided the other day that this film is actually quite bad.
Well, bad as a Star Trek film. I guess it works as a summer blockbuster for the kids but I think it's a shame that the franchise has been reduced to shooty spaceships, fisticuffs and nothing else.
Even Nemesis - as shit as it was - had some Star Trek ideas in it.

Can't find the correct thread, but someone ages ago was asking what the music from the (Abrams) Star Trek trailer was.
In case you still don't know, it's these guys:

I can't decide whether its cynical or inspired, but either way the music sounds just like trailer music and the productions are huge. Interesting!

It's better than them saying "Oh, the script's not ready, but we're going to start shooting right now to meet our June release date", though. I think it's a reason to be cautiously optimistic that they are taking their time over it than just trying to meet a too-short deadline.
Raven
Jul 28 2011, 01:55 PM
I agree it's better to get the script right than start shooting whilst they are still writing, but they have been working on this script for quite a long time already.
This extra delay kind of implies they are having problems.
maian
Jul 28 2011, 03:34 PM
From what I've read - and this is largely conjecture - they haven't been able to write a script because Abrams wasn't prepared to commit to direct until he had finished with Super 8, Orci and Kurtzman have been busy with Fringe, and Lindelof was working on the last season of Lost, then went straight onto Prometheus, so it's not so much that they have been writing it for a long time and getting nowhere, so much as they have not been writing it for a long time and are now ready to start.

He is taking over. Bless him - can't say I blame him for striking when the iron is hot. He'll be doing his Rickman impression on Craig Ferguson in a matter of weeks. Unless it has happened already.
The polar opposite to delightful bumbling Cumblepatch is Noel Fucking Clarke. Smug, self-absorbed, no sense of humour and a mediocre talent. My only hope he is only in it for 5 minutes. I would gladly spit in his coffee. Or maybe do a small poo.
Apparently Alice 'Big Tits' Eve is in it too. Something for the hetero males.

They should cast James McAvoy and make it a Starter for 10 reunion!
I wonder who the villain is going to be? (assuming they are mining existing Trek mythology for the bad guy in this one).
Rumours have been abound for a while that the villain is supposed to be Khan, which would make Cumberbatch an unexpected choice for the role.
I don't really know - or care - what Noel Clarke is like in real life, but he was pretty good as Mickey Smith in Doctor Who, so I'm not unhappy to see him in this.
