I doubt you will find a bigger "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" fan on here than me, but I would be interested to know who likes it. Equally it is always interesting to know who despises it with a fiery passion - not only to steer clear but to find out why. I find that girls seem to like it more than guys, even though it does have the lovely Sarah Michelle Gellar (and many more besides) in.

Spaced fans, your thoughts.

Im very very suprised im not a massive fan, the whole plot n stuff sonds like my sorta thing, never got hugely intoit though. still like it alot though.
Only the last 2 weeks ive been playing my 'once more with feeling' dvd over and over to remember or say the lyrics correctly next time i see an old buffy mad mate of mind and impress (havent seen her in a year mind.)

This line I can say properly now

I used to like it near the beginning when it was actually about slaying vampires but then it just started to get silly and when angel came out i decided it was the right time stop watching. I just find that it's like any other American soap opera now and the story takes crazy turns. Saying this though thats down to personal taste i can understand why a lot of people would still like to watch it, thinking about it though i wouldn't mind watching a few eps again.
Stella MM
It went a little something like this:

Season 1: Big like
Seasons 2 - 5: Intense fangirl worship with a large pinch of SpikeLust thrown in for good measure
Season 6: Big Dislike (apart from the paradigm-shifting episodes like OMWF and Tabula Rasa, of course)
Season 7: Total indifference, punctuated by deep loathing of the fucking 'cockney' slayerette

I sold off all my video boxsets last year for some quick cash but now I'm quite tempted to get some of the DVD sets just so I can watch James Marsters in all his fangirl-moistening glory again.
Ingram
I have found there to be a general consensus from some of the early fans to switch off as soon as she left highschool - season four when Angel started. I loved the early shows so much so that it really made me stick to it when the later episodes were less than my expectations. I still have so much love for the show. I did despise that cockney slayer though... most of the potentials actually.
Raven
I'd pretty much go with Stella's assesment (except for the Spike worshiping wink.gif ) - but I'd Angel was better cool.gif

What is that all about, i failed to watch this far?
Ingram
Yes Angel was more attractive.

Basically the First Evil attempted to wipe out the entire slayer line. There are numerous girls who in theory can be the slayer but do not until the actual one dies. Killing off all those that can be leave none to defend when the slayer dies...
tameblue
I hate it for all the wrong reasons....I didn't start watching it from the beginning, tried watching it but didn't get the continuity, and eventually couldn't be arsed.

Now I hate it...and the fact that everyone else loves it makes me hate it even more....and then Joss wheldonfacewhateverhisname took over an X-men title....grrr.

so now I say Buffy...wank.
Celticstar
I loved it wub.gif i liked it because of the teen angst love thing and the vamp stuff. i loved the evolution of willow from sidekick to uber witch. some of the episodes were really heart string pulling like when she satbbed angel just as he was resouled and the one where her mom dies. i love shows like this and there what i call my soaps. i hate eastenders and crap like that. i live in reality so i like a bit of fantasy with my tele. biggrin.gif i'm also gutted angel was cancelled sad.gif

But what about that other slayer girl there was at the same time as buffy, was it faith or something?
Ingram
Buffy died in series one and so she doesnt count as a slayer but still has the strength and the role because she was there first. Faith was with her in the end though.

What!?!? See this is exactly what i'm talking about, eventually at some point it just get's out of hand and this is the way Buffy has gone. I will big up the early episodes because they are cool and fresh.
Celticstar
Faith is a babe, i so wish i was her cool.gif

Ell
Yeah she really is, but sarah michelle geller was always superior in looks and fighting ability. tongue.gif
Celticstar
i completely disagree, i think buffy was such a little girlie wimp with oh so generic looks.

i also think willow was much prettier in fact i died my hair red because of her.

Ell
Seeing them side by side in that picture i have to admit faith looks nicer, maybe you've converted me.

P.S.

Willow is a total babe.

i know, people don't seem to notice willow but i think shes gorgeous. i have to dye my hair back to boring brown and i'm gutted, i love my red hair sad.gif i love her dress sense too, very hippie chick.

As for the blokes i adore james masters and david b. but i'm watching the last season of angel and i think david has lost his appeal. although i do have an odd crush on giles.

i've given my dvd boxset to my mom in law so i'm missing it.
Ingram
Faith was hot but Sarah Michelle Gellar is much better looking than Eliza Dushku. When they were together in Series 3 Buffy was soooo much hotter.
Celticstar
nah i don't see it but then again it might be the puppies lol!

Ell
Did she have a boob job, or was it just the nose?
Ingram
I didnt think so, her breasts arent exactly huge (or Faith size) probably just a push-up bra...

Buffy follows the same tired focus grouped american cliches -high school, college, the jocks, the geeks, the prom, the teenagers played by 20 year olds, add some angst, a bit of lesbian titillation then throw in some vampires and bingo.

The produces ticked all the boxes for a cult TV show. Quite deliberately and cynically.

And usual with things like this the fanboys and fangirls fell for it.

Pathetic.
Celticstar
i'm a fan girl and happy to be one biggrin.gif i never have give a crap what the cool.gif bunch say smile.gif
prairiedawn
I'm indifferent to it, due to the fact that I've never seen a (whole) episode through, and the bits of ones I saw were ok but in my opinion not worthy of all the praise that was being showered upon it. So therefore I've never really got around to watching it, and by now I reckon there's too much backstory for me to catch up on (I'm one of those people that likes to know all backstory and history and.. well everything about characters in TV shows I watch)

However I've recently discovered another Joss Whedon project ('Firefly') which I really enjoyed, and it's now making me wonder if it's worth perhaps giving Buffy a second (first) chance.
whixie
I'm happy to say I'm a big Buffy fan. I went insane with my student loan last year (hence why I'm broke) and bought 1 - 6 on DVD (but very cheaply, I might add). But now I'm too poor to afford 7 so I haven't watched any of those yet. I love it. I love it all and I want MORE!!!

Plus, Oz, Xander and Spike make it pretty easy to watch.

EDIT: Just to add to that, when I first saw it advertised on Sky at a friend's, my reaction was: 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Well that sounds like a load of bollocks. And then around the middle of season 3 on terrestrial I watched it once and was hooked.
whitey
Brilliant show. Flagged in seasons 4 and 5 but overall one of the best telly shows to grace our screens. Angel gets pretty good in series 3 as well and achieves almost Buffy-like levels of enjoyment by it's last season. Recommended if you need to fill a Buffy shaped gap in your life. I'm a big old Buffy geek.

Can't help but wish Firefly had been kept around long enough to completely eclipse it though.

-edit-
and Faith is hotter.
Sostie
Buffy & Angel was the best genre TV to come out of the US. Both had weak episodes/seasons but even at its worse it was better than most TV.

....good scripts, stories, character's and acting too.

If loving the show makes me a sad fanboy (the kind perhaps that visits a forum revolving around a cult TV show!) then I'm a sad fanboy. Had much the same attitude myself until I watched a few episodes in a row and appreciated it a lot more

Also, if it was such a cynical and deliberate attempt to get audiences, why wasnt the first series given a full season...it was actually a last minute replacement for a another show cancelled mid-season, and produced in a matter of weeks. Couldn't have had that much faith in their focus group!

As for the best babe...Hannigan, no contest.

Oh yeah, when you put it like that I see that I was tricked into liking something just because it filled all the criteria for genuine intelligence, actual wit and effortless charm I look for in a TV show. I'm such a fool.
Julie
You know, I avoided the show deliberately for ages. Caught a few episodes on Spaced the other week, and I think I might be hooked. Luckily for me, my soon to be roommate will be bringing his box-sets with him I'm sure. I think I'm going to start at the beginning and see how I feel. Perhaps It'll be another thing to add to my list of geeky fangirl obessions.
fear_of_pop
I don't know which season it was when I started watching it, but it was the one with Oz being a werewolf.

The hot one on Buffy, by the way, is Andrew.

Man, I wish I was seeing it all for the first time. Again it's a show that doesn't really find its feet until the second series, stick with it.

Yeah series one is perhaps a little tongue in cheek but by the end of series three you will forget ALL of your problems with it.

If you fall into the demographic that they were targeting then it is hardly suprising that you enjoyed it is it?

Focus grouped, audience targetted, and as cynically conceived as the latest edition to McDonalds menu.

As for posting on a website dedicated to a cult tv show - well yes that would be true of my motivations for posting here 4 years ago. But now? Well I used to post here because of the community that existed - a community that was blown away by after the last crash - now I post here out of habit. Nothing else.
Svein
I basically started to watch it at the beginning of Season 4 and became addicted. There's very few episodes that I don't like...
ella
Yep. Hand ups. Fangirl here. biggrin.gif

I watched through in order when the dvds started coming out. I think that I prefer Buffy to Angel - Angel seemed more grown up at times. I liked the lightheartedness of Buffy - it meant that when something went wrong, you really felt it. Although the last couple of series seem to be one long angst-fest. Sheesh. But I loved it anyway smile.gif

And Firefly - why the hell was that cancelled? Hello? USA tv execs? I'm talking to you!
Zoe
It's er...my favourite show of all time ('Spaced' is of course number two).
ipse dixit
I abso-fucking-lutley love Buffy. And Angel. Funny, intelligent, dramatic and tragic in perfect measure. I've got 'em all on DVD. I'm a big shiny geek and proud of it.

It truly sucks that Angel got cancelled so suddenly. If they'd have had just one more season they could have really let rip and let it come to a good conclusion like Buffy did. Instead they had to hurry to tie stuff up as best they could.

Oh, and Oz was undoubtedly the hottest in my mind.
holly
i am the hugest buffy fan i love it. series 5 is the best followed by series 4, series3, series 6, series 7, series 2, and series 1. hmm isnt that strange.

a few thoughts...
willow is by far the best actor, xander is one of the best characters, anya is the funniest, buffy sucks most of the time, riley is a waste of a chatracter, the gentlemen scared me shitless, glory and the mayor are the best big bads, teh evil trio grew on me, andrews id better in series 7, the body/ once more with feeling/ new moon rising are my 3 favourite eposiodes.

its one of those programmes i alwyas thought id hate but i watched it right fromt he beginning and miss it so much now its gone.

I had much the same attitude until I accidently caught The Invisible Girl episode. It was a pretty obvious metaphor, but I thought there was alot more to the show than a stupid name....was hooked after that.
Celticstar
mmmmmmmmm i forgot about oz wub.gif

Pish posh it's all about Xander

You're so right, he is far more the wise-cracking Peter of the comics than Maguire is in the films.
Svein
I think Oz had some of the best lines...

I especially loved his little guest visit on Angel...
Celticstar
i think xanders and oz's lines are the best. so very funny biggrin.gif

To start with Buffy was entertaining (although nothing more) but it just got crapper and crapper until it was a massive heap of stagnant leopards piss.
